Social service advocates lobby city council
Kimball Perry reports from city hall
Cincinnati Council chambers were packed today as representatives for the city’s human services agencies fought to remain a priority to council – and not be forgotten come budget time.
The current discussions about the city’s 2007 budget indicate the approximately $4 million from the city budget that goes to human services could be cut.
“We’re just afraid it’s not a priority and that human services won’t get funded,” said Ann MacDonald, head of the Rape Crisis and Abuse Center of Hamilton County.
MacDonald’s agency used to get $125,000 per year from the city. Now it gets $100,000 – and she worries that number may continue to shrink.
About 50 executives and supporters of those agencies – sporting colorful stickers declaring “I Support Human Services” – were at today’s council meeting.
Victoria Brooks, chief executive officer for AIDS Volunteers of Cincinnati, said the money the city gives her agency is used to match other money AVOC needs.
“AVOC brings $1.3 million in federal funds to Cincinnati (in one year),” Brooks told Council.
There were enough speakers on that subject that the usual 30 minutes set aside for public comments before today’s meeting was extended.

Hmmmm.... Looks like the government teet was about to get shut off and all the little suckers wanted to make sure they got their money.
I've complained for years about all these social service agencies bellying up to the bar for free money. There's virtually NO ACCOUNTABILITY on plenty of these groups & agencies. Let's also bear in mind several of these agencies & services are NOT OPEN to everyone, regardless. That's another pet peeve of mine.
Some at City Council today stated that by shoving more money into the feeding trough will help reduce crime & recidivism. Someone show me the facts & figures on these agencies of their proven track records at reductions to date.
My priorities for my tax dollars are Fire, Police, trash collection/recycling, street maintenance (including decent snow removal) & doing something measurable about these slumlords with their tumbledowns.
Anon 6:04 called it the government teet. Think again. As taxpayers, it's our teets these "programs" are sucking on. And it's about time we hold all of them accountable.
Money out of City Hall has gone unchecked for ages - Genesis, Pettus-Brown, that Christine woman who was collecting a City paycheck for years, sitting at home on her fat tookus watching TV, Invest in Neighborhoods, Jail4Dale Mallory, and the list will go on until taxpayers step up & make demands.
The core basic & emergency services need to be addressed first. If there's a surplus, then do the giveaways. Should Council vote to re-establish full funding to the social services programs, look for even more people to leave Cincinnati.
Enemies of humanity are attacking the lifeblood of the poor in Cincinnati !
Do the filthy w(R)ong wingnuts think that blacks will actually work ?
Shifty buckwheat blackwell would cut off the welfare to his own people and make them get jobs !!
That's just throwing votes to the Dems ! Most blacks don't want to work and can be bought with some free cheese !!
Only a fool would expect them to vote for a Republicrap party that expects them to get up every morning and go to a job !!
Democrats need to keep fighting for the black man's right not to work !!

Do you think Council member Ghiz notice there were even there? Or was she too busy typing on her blackberry?
Cutting these programs are not Pro-Life or Pro-Family. While Mrs. Ghiz seems to be a Republican in Name Only is also Pro-Life. She apparently is not a Republican concerned with supporting and defending the causes of life as these programs do. I would hope that the conservative evangelicals and Catholics would recognize that this is a Pro-Life matter.
