Ghiz: Don't sign those petitions!

City councilwoman Leslie Ghiz, who wanted a slots parlor at Broadway Commons, is "Angry Ghiz," according to her three-exclamation point press release:

ANGRY GHIZ SAYS DO NOT SIGN GAMBLING PETITIONS!

Southwest Ohio must NOT sign petitions!

Councilmember Leslie Ghiz adamantly supports legalized casino gambling in Ohio, but only if Cincinnati is included in that initiative. Queen City Gaming and Entertainment, the organization fighting to keep Cincinnati included, has withdrawn their ballot initiative because of continuing legal pressure from the Learn and Earn group in northern Ohio and the owners of the Argosy casino in Indiana.

"If you sign a petition to legalize gambling in Ohio, it means everywhere in Ohio but Cincinnati" said Ghiz.

"DO NOT SIGN A PETITION TO LEGALIZE GAMBLING IN OHIO," urged Ghiz!

Council passed a resolution in May stating their support of a Casino at the Broadway Commons location in downtown Cincinnati. Since then the Hamilton County Sheriff Simon Leis and the FOP have come out in support of this initiative.

"We have the support locally, unfortunately the Learn and Earn group and the owners of the Argosy casino are doing everything they can to stop the Cincinnati initiative," said Ghiz. A slot parlor in Cincinnati would generate an estimated 22 million dollars in tax revenue for the City of Cincinnati, plus an additional 18 million dollars for Hamilton County. Ghiz said, "Southwest Ohio cannot afford to let this opportunity pass us by, we must work to oppose the Learn and Earn gambling initiative."

Ghiz noted that although the issue is dead for now that doesn't mean that Queen City Gaming and Entertainment can't try again in a future election. Provided the current amendment does not make it on the ballot and or does not pass, Queen City Gaming and Entertainment can organize again and re-institute their initiative that includes Cincinnati after the November election.

Let's see... $22 million per year to the city. That means that total payroll for casino and casino-related jobs works out to... at 2.1% .... $1.047 BILLION. That's 10,000 new jobs at $100,000 per year. Or 20,000 new jobs at $50,000 per year. Or 40,000 new jobs at $25,000 per year.

Then there's the county's $18,000,000. That, I guess, is going to come from the sales tax. Currently, the county's sales tax is 1%. That means that the casino and related enterprises will need to rake in $1.8 BILLION in taxable economic activity.

Even if that happens, which is highly doubtful, I can't imagine that payroll costs are going to eat up 55% of the revenue. What restaurant or hotel devotes 55% of its revenues to payroll???

Like always, gambling proponents are relying on pie-in-the-sky revenue projections.

Gambling succeeds in places where it is accepted for what it is and not a budgetary stop--gap. Argosy was not created to bail out Lawrenceburg.

Gambling was legalized to "bring back" Atlantic City. Anyone who has been to both knows which one succeeds and which one does not.

Just because Cincinnati was sleeping at the wheel, we should not punish the great state of Ohio, period.

That Cincinnati deal smells funning anyway.

When the former mayor leaves to join a gaming commission he should have looked out for his number one city instead of himself.

If he had thought about others instead of himself the dem's would still have a seat in congress.

We should have a gaming boat as part of the west bank project.

Let the lawyers fight for equal protection on the ballot initiative !

Was the press release issued from her Council office?

Council office resources shall not be used to support or oppose either the placement of an initiative or referendum issue on the ballot or the passage of the ballot issue. This provision does not prohibit research on the subject matter of a ballot issue, endorsement of a position on the issue, the creation of informational materials or similar efforts by individual members of council provided that such efforts do not directly advocate for or against placement on the ballot or passage of the ballot issue. Such use of council office resources shall be subject to audit by the finance director and any use or expenditure of council resources so determined to be in violation of this provision shall be reimbursed.

"If I can't gamble...NO ONE CAN!!! I'm taking my dice and going home!
Waaaaaahhhhh!" said Leslie Ghiz.

I wonder how her buddy, Clermont Countian and US Rep. Mean Jean Schmidt feels about her buddy Ghiz wanting to blow the chance for Anderson to get gambling.

Whats the 411 on the just-turned-37 Ms Ghiz?

It's obvious she is a Republican or the Enquirer wouldn't have published such a flattering photo.

Off topic, but, have a look at how the local w(R)ong wing nuts expect to sell their failed policies in Iraq this coming week.

First they think gay marriage is more important and then, after the public calls them on the carpet for their baseless grandstanding, they want to debate Iraq ?

What a laugh, the w(R)ong wing nuts want you to believe that the terrorist of 911 all came from Iraq and if we leave they will attack us again.

Look at the marching orders from our own local bonner.

Talk about gambling with our children's life !

^^ We shouldn't punish the great state of Ohio? So we should vote yes and support the Learn and Earn campaign, which did everything in its power to stop Cincy's bid to get on the ballot. Should we vote yes and support Penn National?

Please.

Anyone find it odd to have a picture of Leslie in a church next to an article about a vice like gambling? Also, everyone seems to forget that the Learn & Earn proposal has a specific set-aside (0.4% of the total statewide gaming revenue) to be split between Cincinnati & Hamilton County WITHOUT having a casino in the City. No other community has that (not Columbus, not Toledo, only us). Hmmm... we get the cash but not the issues that casinos create. Why is that so bad?

Nothing like up to miniute bias news from the local w(R)ong wing fishwrap.

At least with KKKorte running the blog he put in the amount of hours to run things.

This blog has become nothing but a press realease posting for the w(R)ong wing nuts.

I was pleased when the bias KKKorte was removed, but, we now have bias w(R)ong wing nut stynographers and lazy at that.

This is the same old schmidt that was up Friday and it is now Sunday.

This will probably not get posted until noon Moday, if at all ? We know it has to pass the w(R)ong wing nut political test before posting.

Are you telling me there hasn't been any w(R)ong wing nut press release or comments since Friday ?

They print the paper version everyday. I guess fisherman work 7 days a week ?

Stenographers don't !

yes we can thank Leslie for pointing us all in the right direction on --what was the subject again?

Yes. Gambling. That was the subject. Leslie, a Sunday School Teacher and a promoter of slots for downtown - a goodlooking Republican with a heart of gold.

What's her marital status? I heard she lived a really wild lifestyle when she lived in Westerville (noted hotbed of wild living).

There is no doubt in my mind she lives in a hotbed !

we "like to know the facts about everybody," council members are entitled to privacy about their personal lives, just like anyone else.

Anon, it is clear you don't know schmidt !

There is no such thing as facts from the w(R)ong wing fishwrap, period !

Bronson is actually trying to whitewash buckwheat blackwell.

The immoral buckwheat keeps screaming:
PETER, PETER, I must have my PETER !

The fishwrap deserves no professional courtesy or dignity because they earn NONE !

Do not let the casinos in!!!! I am from Kansas City we have the new Argosy here. They are the worst I have ever seen. They only care about taking your money and building their franchise. Keep your money in the bank.
