Open thread on Cincinnati's population loss

You've probably seen the Enquirer's special report today on how Cincinnati is the shrinkingest city in America this decade.

It's also a big day at City Council; the vote is scheduled on Mayor Mark Mallory's city manager nominee, Milton Dohoney Jr.

Hell, who wants to live in a city where all they want to build is jails ?

Where the local w(R)ong wing nuts in the:

Hamilton County Republican Party .com

try to suppress free speech because they engage in unlawful, deceiving and misleading judicial advertisements !

Where the local fishwrap is so bias they print the w(R)ong wing nuts press release as advocates !

No thanks, there are far better places to live !

Maybe the population loss has something to do with an obstructionist council that won't allow a mayor who is smarter than all of them get anything done.

Or maybe it's the fault of the mayor, who doesn't work with council, doesn't keep council members or department directors in the loop, and instead just issues commands like a dictator through his proxy, Carla.

I bet we can all agree it is the fault of the Congressman, and his terrible hairstyle, who represents two-thirds of the city.

Another point of which we can be certain is that the city's governing body, particularly those members of the body who have overseen terribly irrelevant functions such as law, safety, and finance, bear absolutely no responsibility whatsoever.

In fact, the best way to reverse this population decline, natch, the best way to reverse every single problem the city faces, is to take someone from the majority party of the city's governing body and promote him or her to the national governing body, where such person would most likely be in the minority party.

That, my friends, is the best way, in fact, the only way, to turn Cincinnati around!

Adios, Stevie!
John Cranley for Congress!

Intelligence factor is the reason - Cincinnati is addicted to reality TV, doing nothing about real development (banks), discussing over and over real important issues like eminent domain, gay marriage and to say Merry Christmas vs Happy Holidays, Citizen for Community values, Article 12, people like Bill Cunningham and Peter Bronson's endless drool, backing real knucleheads like Bush and Blackwell and a newspaper that puts on the front page important stuff like the local BB team getting to the elite 8 or High School prom pictures while real news like Spain terrorist attacks is put on the back pages. Just plain dumb people and do gooders will drive people away. And the murder rate sure doesn't help either or the addiction to chain restaurants. Plus we elect Schmidt Happens who embarrasses the whole region anytime her picture is taken or she opens her mouth. We are out of here as soon as possible too. And thank you to all who will reply that don't let the door hit you on the way out. We won't and you can keep your dumpy decaying and dying city! Basically in a nutshell Cincinnati Sucks.

I think it's because of all the obese, ugly, uneducated, bible-thumping, inbreeding, Republican-loving, regressive hicks in this town. They only care about (a) which high school you attended, and (b) which tomato sauce-doused spaghetti is the best "chili." Gimme a frickin' break! Outside this town, no one gives a rat's ass about the high school you attended (because people in other towns actually go on to get college degrees). Also, that's not really chili; it's just a runs-inducing tomato sauce.

Most of these people cannot even put together one coherent sentence in English, not even those who work for this rag. Plus, they are not ashamed of the mediocrity that abounds. Indeed, they are proud of it.

Anyone who is smart, ambitious and is in a position to leave, does.

And don't forget that the one person who's been in office throughout almost two decades of population decline, losing to Kentucky and escalating crime is Phil Heimlich.

It's time for something new.

This w(R)ong wing fishwrap knows it's the blacks that are destroying Cincinnati, but they don't have the guts to print it.

But there's ONE black man that will be out of the area soon !

The Dems are sending buckwheat blackwell down the river in chains !!

After that, any other black man that tries to move into the city should be sent the same direction: down to New Orelans !

To anon at 3:02 from anon at 1:51 - if I knew my wife never wrote on these blogs I would swear she wrote your entry. I am still cracking up about the high school comment and the runs inducing tomato sauce chilli. Keep up the great posts!!!!!!

anon 3:39 PM

Emulation is the highest form of flattery !

Are you the HTML impersonator with no character of your own ?

It is whites keeping the black man down so w(R)ong wing nuts can justify a larger jail to employ more of their useless cronies !

That way they can arrest good loving neighbors who drop a quarter in expired parking meters.

We must have more laws so we can arrest more freedom lovers for the Si cross-dressing empire and get those federal dollars to butt check the inmates !

I am having difficulty with the math:

Less citizens
+
More Police
=
More jails

Hey, let's try !

Less Police
+
hand up
=
more productive citizens.

Thanks for my intro, one of you among the thundering herd of anonymouses.

Simply change the name of the Queen City to Sinincincinnati, then try to live up to the new name, and the old nickname. If it means abolishing the police department, or, at the least, its vice squad, then go for it.

You must be a real w(R)ong wing nut wacko if you think the police can dictate moral values !

You seem more suited for pre-war Germany !

Oh yes, nothing as sweet as the police state !

As a woman, Cole is an embarrassment. Taking this highly qualified man through this mess no wonder Cincinnati is at the bottom of retaining people. Funny how her and the gang of four want to reduce the salary and conduct a one year performance review but did not preach this for the current acting manager. First she had a problem with Lemmie, now Dohoney. But no problem with Rager or Riodan. Self hate and jealousy is alive and well. I taking my husband and child to West Chester like the rest of the former city residents.

I am quite amused by the speculations of the left-wingers who blame everything on the conservative people.

FYI left wingers: most of the people still left in the central city are Democrats.

Hard to blame the right-wingers when they have long since packed up their bags and moved to the suburbs.

Maybe its the left-wingers who don't miss the right wingers personally, but are quited miffed at their declining tax base.

Good luck Cincinnati. They should rename you from the 'Queen City' to the 'Imploding City'. Why would someone live within city limits? What do they get for the taxes they pay?

Why *not* leave Cincinnati? I mean, seriously, does this city have anything REAL going for it?

Downtown is a dangerous demillitarized zone, as is UC-Clifton. I mean, really, "race riots" in the 21st century? The streets "roll up" at 6PM. Our public transportation is a historic farce, that future societies will look back on and laugh about. The Bengals are leeches. The weather's dangerously hot or cold 10 months out of the year. The radio and newspapers are nearly one-company monopolies. Everyone's fat. The cost of living is low, but so are the wages. The job situation is bad; what places ARE hiring are places like WalMart and P&G.

The place is OWNED by Republicans; the left has no voice, and no say. Every time one of our barely elected, hereditary leaders DOES clue in that something's wrong, they respond by throwing money at some snake-oil peddling group like the CRC or the banks commission that has NEVER done anything right. We've just about slid into the rust belt.

I've lived here practically my whole life, and here's Cincy in a nutshell: "Cincinnati is a joyless place, whose inhabitants are focused on scratching out a meager existence. Cincinnati is where you go when you're easily satisfied."

I'm going to tell you this; of the 90% of our population that's left, another 20% would leave if we could. Cincinnati *deserves* to die out.

I ust moved back here because I had to for a short time (money issues) and feel %100 that if everyone had the money means to leave that at least, at LEAST 30-40 percent of the people left in this horid place would leave before thanksgiving day. Of the people I know in this city all but one would leave given a change in money. That is about 200 people ages range from 25-47. A really bad place, but I guess it is better than some third world countries---for now.

Nothing to do in Cincicrappy but bowl and breed. That goes for the whole tristate area, not just Cincicrappy city limits. Looks like the uptight repressed residents are finally awakening to this reality and are leaving in droves. Not everyone will leave though, some just won't be able to part from their high school buddies and their personalized beer mugs at the local bar.

I came here in early 2001 due to the low cost of living and the so called "digital" rine that was supposedly developing.

I thought I would bring my little IT consulting business here and do quite well. LOL. What a joke that turned out to be.

What I found instead was a city in the beginning of urban flight. Excuse me but this happened in the mid-late 1970's in many other cities.

I have met a few nice people here but I find that all people do here is drink/eat and drink/eat. This is especially true downtown. I live downtown and the only thriving businesses here are bars and/or restaurants.

As for the race issue...I am a black man and while racism still exists in varying degrees throughout America, the amount of segregation here is mind boggling.

Ironically, Cincinnati is LIVING PROOF that poverty is the direct result of a lack of education and economic resources and not race. There are many whites and blacks here who are good people who happen to be poor to lower middle class (economically speaking).

As a simple example, I have seen poor uneducated white women under 20 raising multiple children alone while their poor uneducated white male fathers do not take care of their responsibilities.

Yet, this cities so called "elite" white class still seems to get away with perpetuating these endless racial stereotypes. By the way, some of these same "elite" people are the bigger alcoholics than a homeless drunk as they can afford it. I find it shameful to see so many supposedly sophisticated "adults" vomiting all over the side walks every weekend.

They are also very destructive in that they also destroy their own downtown homes.

In the final analysis, I am in the peak of my career and do not have the time to wait for this city to catch up. I am not going to let simply living and not wanting to move destroy all that I have already built for myself and wife. We are out of here as soon as our current lease expires!!! For the ambitious and career minded I highly recommend the following cities:

Atlanta, GA
Wash DC/MD/VA Region
California

High cost of living = high demand for jobs + high wages

For those of you living moving out into the suburbs, since you do not know let me tell what happens next since I've already seen it twice....

A outer suburban area cannot and will not survive without a strong central city center in the long-run.

10-15 years from now (maybe 20-25 years since everything is soooo slow here) you and your decendants will realize that they are tired of commuting 1 hour each way to work and begin to move back into the city center.

I grew up in the Colerain area of Cincinnati and let me tell you what...I must have been the only person who's left. I moved into the boonies of Pennsylvania five years ago and I have no intention of coming back to Ohio, much less Cincinnati.

All people do in the White Oak/Colerain area is whine about Elder Football, how Bushie Poo is getting such a "bum rap" while they put plastic American flags on their imports and think the only vacation area in the world is Gatlinburg, TN. No one ever says "thanks" to someone who helps them - I gave up in my teens - and they seem to want to move right next door to their brain dead mothers.

Meanwhile, everyone marries, then divorces, the offspring of their parent's friends or their closest friend's most recent ex-boy/girlfriend.

Cincinnati, or at least the Northwestern area, is a microcosm of it's own protocol and habits which is made up of "Be afraid of everything! Rednecks, terrorists, Jews and blacks are coming to get you!"

It's like no one wants to do anything other than go to Home Depot, Wal Mart or their parent's house. Yeah, I understand that sometimes people need hammers, tile grout and be close with their families, but not every single free moment they get.

Cincinnati and it's suburbs can become a ghost town for all I care.

They'd probably all run and congregate in Harrison or Ross, drink nothing but Bud Light, worry about gays, fantasize love making with Toby Keith, dress each other in matching clothes for family portraits and buying Britney Spears their seven year old daughters.

Meanwhile, I get to hear people from the old neighborhood (Colerain/Cincinnati areas) whine about how "liberal" Pennsylvania is just because PA didn't buy the "Gays are destroying us" crap. Just shows they know nothing about this gun-toting, steak-eating and friendly area who doesn't give a crap who lays down with who. Every single discussion with Cincinnati people always moves to either whining about these fantasy "liberals" or is some form of political polarizing grievances. It's like they secretly enjoy the division and arguments that come with it. Heck, I know they do. Every single one of my old pals tune into Rush and Billdo every single day. Apparently, to Cincinnati people, that means I automatically like "Air America" even though I've never heard it once.

Woo. That allowed some release! Hey, grow up in Colerain and you'll get that way.

I've paid my dues ten times over in dealing with Cincinnati citizens. Good riddance!

One of the reason my family left Cincinnati was the intolerence the populace had of people who were different through means of religion and race. My family is Jewish and we left Butler county to escape continual harassment. No where else in the country do we have such intolerence.

This tells you a lot about the people and freedoms in Cincinnati. As an example, look how many people have posted themselves as anonymous out of fear from the general public.

Wow, how very sad. My family from generations back lived in Cincy. My dad didn't return after he met my mom in grad school in a different state; I've been wanting to visit the ancestral stomping grounds. I suppose someone likes it there or there wouldn't be anyone left in the city...everyplace has problems...

I grew up in Cincinnati, lived there for 50 years, and then moved to the DC area.

The last straw was the 1996 vote to build two stadiums in a town that desperately needed improved schools and infrastructure to keep people and businesses from moving away. Hocking the next three decades' future to tear down an existing stadium that had never made any money and replace it with two that would never make any money made it clear there was not going to be a future.

Here I run into former Cincinnatians all the time, white and African-American, who just got tired of the petty politics, the shortsighted decisions, the botched downtown renewal, and a quality of life that just kept getting worse. I left the town that elected Jerry Springer and wasted two decades of urban renewal trying to populate a "skywalk".

Reading the Cincinnati Enquirer today doesn't make me feel that I made the wrong decision.
