Ghiz: Mayor is disingenuous

Press release Cincinnati Council Member Leslie Ghiz just released:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
June 20, 2006

‘DISINGENUOUS’ MAYOR TO HOLD VOTE ON CITY MANAGER DESPITE ABSENCE OF VICE MAYOR

Ghiz Calls Mayor’s Push for Vote Minus Tarbell “Underhanded”

Councilmember Leslie Ghiz today blasted Mayor Mallory’s decision to call for a vote tomorrow on his selection for City Manager. During the Mayor’s weekly press conference last Tuesday, Mayor Mallory stated that he would not be calling for a vote because of the absence of Councilmember David Crowley. A week later, however, the Mayor is now pushing forward with a vote despite the absence of Vice Mayor Jim Tarbell, who is in Nantes, France for a Sister City program in his official capacity as Vice Mayor.

“It seems a bit suspicious to me that the Mayor would be calling for a vote with the Vice Mayor 4,000 miles away,” Ghiz said. Ghiz further noted that Crowley is supportive of the City Manager candidate and Tarbell has been opposed. “If the Mayor is confident that his candidate is the best one for the job, certainly he can hold off on the vote for another week,” she said.

Ghiz has been steadfastly opposed to the City Manager candidate, citing an overly favorable contract, the candidate’s lack of experience.

The City Council meeting will be held tomorrow, June 21, at 2:00pm in Council Chambers.

Isn't there some kind of procedural remedy to postpone the vote?

If not, then it should be easy for the other council members to vote 'no' on this candidate.

Council members simply cannot allow themselves to be stampeded into voting now, especially since the post has been filled by an interim city manager for so long.

According to the Sister Cities Association of Greater Cincinnati (www.queencity.com/sca/), it is Nancy, France; not Nantes, France.

Ghiz is a shameless publicity hound, not unlike her ex boyfriend Cranley...

Mallory is incompetent, I wish Pepper would have had the lack luster job of Mayor of Cincinnati instead of making Heimlich run a good race to beat him.

What a mean and hateful woman. Does she ever say anything positive about anything?

When is ghiz going to get around to making good on her campaign promose of cutting the salaries of City Council (http://www.smartvoter.org/2005/11/08/oh/hm/vote/ghiz_l/)? What's that? Ohh, she's too busy cashing her checks.

To anon 10:08 pm: she says lots of positive things about John Cranley and David Pepper. She is openly supporting Pepper over Heimlich and the Gutless Wonders running the GOP just wink and nod.

She openly supports Cranley over Steve Chabot.

Tell her to shut up and put on a tight shirt for another w(R)ong wing fishwrap photo opportunity !

The Giz doesn't like black folks.

That's why she is voting for Strickland and way she made certain she was at Pepper's birthday party with the phony assertion that she had the same birthday.

Maybe she is doing Pepper now and feels she has to dig into Mallory ?

When it was suggested that everyone remain silent about her attendance because she doesn't support David, her comment was:

God forbid, I support you David !

What's the matter is the w(R)ong wing nuts putting pressure on you, Gizzy !

Is the Kane calling you a Rino !

Are you trying to save face with the Hypocrite's ?

What an underhanded, Phony !

What in the world is Tarbell doing in France spending City Taxpayers' Monies on such a frivolous assignment? Is this so called "Sister City Program" really a benefit to City Taxpayers in anyway? Shouldn't the Vice Mayor be at his desk working on the new 2007 & 2008 budget?

at 11:30 PM, June 20, 2006 Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yes she does- she was quoted as saying that Karl Rove was one of her heroes(not that this should surprise anyone)

whoever is writing her press releases sucks at it-they seem to be big on inflammatory language, which typically is not used in a council member's press releases

Hey, Anon 10:08 -- Don't shoot the messenger. Mallory's acting like a total crumb, and we're lucky to have people such as Ghiz calling him out on it.

Where in the world is Jim Tarbell? The Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County says Cincinnati's Sister City is Nancy, France (http://www.cincinnatilibrary.org/resources/local.asp?category=10). Is Tarbell in Nancy, or Nantes? Is Ghiz too stupid to know the difference? Did Tarbell go off to the wrong city?

Either way, Ghiz needs to get over herself.

Either way, Ghiz needs to get over herself

She psychologically cannot get over herself !

She is all alone !

A Rino in her party and she dates herself.

She campaigned on $30,000 salary cap.

Is she donating that extra city salary she is receiving to charity ?

Talk about "Disingenuous" !

I am so sick of this! Why are people leaving this town? Because there is no progress on the issues we elected Council to address. Instead, we have folks like Ghiz actively working to keep things status quo.

To the first anonymous...you really need to lay off the kool-aid. Council is not being "stampeded" they are being obstructionists and putting the brakes on city progress. Should the City operate with an interim forever (you do know what interim means, right?) It sounds like you and your cohorts enjoy having Cincinnati hover in mediocrity. For the last six months the city has been going through this search process - we've all heard about it. No one is being rushed to vote. This discussion has been going on for 2 weeks. You and Ghiz make it sound like Council didn't know this was going to happen or that it's happening too fast. How often does Council spend 2 weeks on ANYTHING!? On Monday, it took a few finance committee members less than an hour to put together (Cranley worked this behind closed doors) a so called policy for spending taxpayers money over the next two years and they will vote on it today. Was there a public hearing? Can you get background on how the policy was developed? Doesn't the public have a right to know how their money will be spent and what Council hopes to achieve with these policies?

Council got their public "interview" with Dohoney even after they had interviewed him (did someone say media hound?). I applaud those who made calls on their own to find out more about him. And let's not forget the 50k taxpayers spent to hire a search firm (someone who does this stuff for a living) to conduct the search.

Council knew and participated in the City Manager search. Now it's time to get on with this so Cincinnati can get moving. Rager has been interim for 6 months too long. It also took Council less than 10 minutes (without any notice) to re-up his contract and give him a $20,000 raise for 6 months of interim service -- without any public review of his progress...did you think to ask about that? We need to get a permanent manager on board, stop this nonsense so the city can get back on track. Keep in mind, Rager DOESN'T WANT THE JOB NOR DID HE APPLY.

As far as Tarbell is concerned...what on earth is he thinking of by taking a vacation that would allow him to miss Council. We should stop cutting him slack - his committee barely met during the year and now he has scheduled a vacation that would have him miss a Council meeting. Sister Cities is a great organization and the trip is not being funded by the City. It's too bad they are being dragged into this by Tarbell's effort to make it seem like his trip is an official city visit. Great, now everyone will think all Cincinnatian's dress like clowns with top hats -- is that the international City image we want? Give me a break!

Ghiz is 100% right, actually. Mallory postponed the vote when Crowley was gone, but now sneaks it through when HIS OWN VIce Mayor is representing CIncinnati elsewhere. He clearly just wants to cut off debate from the prime opponent of his selection. Given that this is the most important decision either the Mayor or Council will make, this is is an attack on the Council as a whole.

Any Councilmember who caves in and votes today is failing to respect their office.

at 10:24 AM, June 21, 2006 Anonymous Anonymous said...

Well,Tarbell won't be in town today---He is in France sipping on numerous glasses of vintage French wines.

at 11:14 AM, June 21, 2006 Anonymous Anonymous said...

Tarbell has been a joke in the Vice-Mayor's office since day one. Remember his ultra-sexist press conference. Maybe Tarbell should start acting like the Vice-Mayor if he wants to maintain any respect.

at 3:42 PM, June 21, 2006 Anonymous Anonymous said...

Mallory picked him! Now he can't even build consensus with his own number two guy.

The current City Hall may be the worst yet. Luken knew how to get a City Manager through.

This is typical of Cincinnati politics. While the city across the pound flourishes with the Levee and a host of other proverbial steps in the right direction, our Council devote countless hours on meaningless counterproductive debates. I was hoping this Council would be better than the last several. I also hoped that we would never see the likes of media seekers like Reece and the self proclaimed Police Chief’s boss. I was of course wrong. Ms. Ghiz has graciously accepted their place in the headliners chair and nothing as usual shall be accomplished. That is unless you consider vitriolic polemical press releases a sign of progress.

Mallory may go down as the worst Mayor in decades. It's hard to blame Council for that.

He alienates people like Crowley and Cole from the outset--who are nice enough to still support him.

He cuts deals with people who can't be trusted like Heimlich and Monzel.

He can't get along with his own vice Mayor.

He seems to want to everything behind closed doors.

at 5:40 PM, June 21, 2006 Anonymous Anonymous said...

Perkins she's not supporting either because she knows the repercussions. She'll tell you Chabot's a great congressman, its his staff that pisses her off. Not that Lindgren really wants her support anyway.

Emulation is the highest form of flattery !

Perhaps you would be willing to vote for that black man, but it's clear you don't know schmidt !

The Dems are sending buckwheat blackwell down the river in chains !

Everybody knows that Ohio blacks are in the pocket of the democrat masters, buckwheat has no chance to win !

It's black and white for all to see ! lol lol

This w(R)ong wing fishwrap might admite buckwheat, but he's just another piece of property to me.

I hear they need some more free labor down in New Orleans! Ohio Dems could make a pretty penny selling buckwheat to those greedy FEMA thugs !!

My Countrymen!-My Countrymen!,we must wait patiently for the vote. We must endure the wait together until "King Tarbell" returns from his far away visit to the Kingdom of France.

As a strong Republican, I am overwhelmingly disappointed in Leslie Ghiz. She has become an enormous embarrasment to our party and our city. Her inflammatory, child-like rhetoric is useless and unbecoming. She governs by emotion, not be logic and common sense.

Like many Cincinnatians, I had great hope for this city council. The likes of Alicia Reese had been removed and some fairly mainstream young minds had taken seats on the council (albeit Democrats). Instead, this council has sunken to new lows. The "strong mayor" is hardly that with this cry-baby council that looks first to assert it's authority before looking out for the good of the city. We've seen it in the banks development and now on this city manager decision. It is very disappointing.

This council, like it's predecessors, now is full of young egos and no-responsibility children like Ghiz and Cranley. Because both have never been in the "real world", don't understand life's real issues, they act like small children who want to be recognized publicly rather than do what's best for this great city.

I ask Leslie Ghiz: Is the inflammatory language in every one of your press releases really what is best for Cincinnati? You can't say "yes" with a straight face.

To Anon 4:02-- AMEN!
Just imagine if Ghiz had gotten the appointment last year instead of Monzel? We would have had to endure an EXTRA 10 months of this childish behavior. Let's hope this big baby gets a "time out" next November!

assert it's authority

She makes a great w(R)ong wing nut !

The wRong wing is all about the illusion of authority.

Tapping phones, suppressing free speech by suing citizens, mining your website visits, grabbing your library records, bribing data miners, taking (the Duke) kickbacks, robbing Indians, lying to prosecutors, corporate oil company welfare, crony no bid contracts, covert propaganda ( paid advertising presented as news and a mad brad fishwrap press release ), etc.

If you are a republican you have to love the way Giz carries your torch.

Actually Ghiz has "carried a torch" for several prominent Dems- so, she likes to screw Dems literally and figuratively.
