Charter Committee endorses Issue 27

The Cincinnati Charter Committee has endorsed Issue 27, the sales tax increase that would build a new jail and fund public safety programs.

The Republican and Democratic parties endorsed the issue last month. The Cincinnati FOP and the NAACP have decided not to endorse it.

Said Michael Goldman, president of the charter committee: "Public safety is a complex issue in Hamilton County. We heard from both sides and enthusiastically endorsed Issue 27. It is unusual that all three parties endorsed and demonstrates the importance of this issue that support crosses party lines."

Charter members Chris Bortz, Roxanne Qualls, Joan Kaup, and Melanie Bates have endorsed Issue 27, according to the committee.

WOW! A resounding round of approval of the Safety plan as the best option to address our criminal justice woes in Hamilton County!!!!!

How absolutely incredible.

Left behind, are the fringe elements of society; the selfish, the greedy, the un-informed and the ignorant.

Now, the only real question is: are you willing to pay your fair share to solve this huge problem or do you just want another super-sized band aid courtesy of Pat DeWine, the Libertarians ( all 3 of them), COAST (6) and the NAACP(100)?

If we ALL pay our fair share - we can get this done

Is Chris Bortz, Charter candidate, a registered Republican?

Can someone please explain the FOP's position on this? Is it anything other than self serving?

Let's see those who are against Issue 27...Chris Smitherman, Justin Jeffre and a rag-tag collection of others.

Hell, if it was up to Jeffre, doing away with the marijuana ordinance would be good enough with him. That and his entertainment district.

Here's a thought: build an entertainment district where you can smoke as much dope as you want. And build some apartments or condos there so that Chris Smitherman can live there.

There. Everybody happy?

Again Chris Finney and his COAST libertarians are opposing Sheriff Leis who is charged with the safety of the residents of Hamilton County. Do they have an alternate plan to keep us safe! NO! As a group supposedly so against taxes they certainly have no problem with tax payer money being spent to oppose all their worthless lawsuits over the years. What a bunch of hypocrits! Wake up folks if people are leaving Hamilton County it is not due to high taxes it has everything to do with the safety of their families. Finney can proudly say he and his COAST fanatic libertarians helped the exodus!

Anonymous, you are ignorant and should take your silver foot out of your double talking mouth. The NAACP has closer to 1,000 members and the Green Party, CPA and No Jail Tax PAC are all real progressive groups that led the effort to get this supersized regressive tax off the backs of the poor.

Unlike your corporate jail pushing party, these progressive groups understand how your plan isn't comprehensive and is merely an outline of a plan to make a plan.

If you wanted ALL to pay their fair share then why did Portune push legislation to keep CEOs like daddy Pepper from paying taxes on their stock options. You know this is a regressive tax that makes children and the poor pay more than rich pricks like you!

The COAST-NAACP alliance is going to go down in flames on the jail tax. Lay down with dogs like Smitherman and you're going to get fleas.

supersized regressive tax off the backs of the poor ..... this is a regressive tax that makes children and the poor pay more than rich pricks like you!

lol - think of the children! They'll have to pay an extra half cent when they buy their gum!

It's a sales tax. As in, if you buy anything in Hamilton County, you pay into it at the same level, regardless of socioeconomic status.

And, how is a half-cent increase "supersized"???

Your ignorance of how a sales tax works is really astounding.

How is an amendment on federal income tax relevant to a local sales tax?

It isn’t…the objection from the fair tax nay Sayers is that our State and local sales tax rates are too high as they are. I’m interested in how many 27 proponents would support this initiative.

I still don't understand what that has to do with the jail issue. HR25 is a federal initiative to abolish the IRS, repeal the federal income tax and replace it with a national sales tax to be administered by the states. Issue 27 is a county issue to build and operate a new jail and to provide social services.

Since we're not voting in November on HR25, I don't see how my, or anyone else's thoughts on a national sales tax are relevant.

Gosh, I haven't heard this sage advice in a long time. My Grandmother used the comment often. And it's true. Either one is going to get fleas or the SMLP will stab one in the back or sell 'em out.

Regressive tax my foot. You know, these so-called "poor" people would really have something to whine & moan about if they had to pay part of their freight while they're sitting in the jail. There's other counties in Ohio who charge their inmates room & board while in the county jail. The Court overturned that plan here back in 2003, I believe. Since then, no one has had hard enough cajones to challenge that ruling.

That would make everything fair & even across the board - pay a half cent in sales tax & the criminals pay for their bunk. Heck, they'd be able to enforce the levy for only 8-10 years at that rate.

Indeed. Charter never met a tax (hike) it didn't like.
