Local snafus make national news

Jean Schmidt made national news today before the first vote in her congressional race was counted.

TV cameras were rolling when Schmidt tried and failed several times to scan her ballot this morning at her Loveland polling place. After a few frustrating minutes, she finally found a machine that would accept the ballot.

But by then, images of the snafu were flying around the country. A friend from Los Angeles called Schmidt's husband, Peter, to say he'd seen the whole episode on the morning shows. It happened just a few hours before fellow congressman Steve Chabot was turned away at his polling place and forced to return with a proper ID.

"Both our local congressmen have been disenfranchised," Peter said.
