Area lawmakers vote to uphold Bush veto

Greater Cincinnati's House members voted today against overriding President Bush's veto of the children's health bill. The measure failed, meaning that the president's veto stands. It also means it won't be considered in the Senate.

Meanwhile, Sen. George Voinovich, R-Ohio, introduced Thursday an alternate measure to renew the State Children's Health Insurance Program, known as SCHIP, along with a $1,400 per child health care tax credit. Reps. John Boehner, Steve Chabot and Jean Schmidt are co-sponsors of the bill's House counterpart.

Here is what Cincinnati's local lawmakers had to say about today's vote:

Minority Leader Boehner, R-West Chester, voted AGAINST the veto override: "I’m disappointed that we’ve reached this point. I think all of us know that Democrats want to renew the SCHIP program; Republicans want to renew the SCHIP program. We haven’t been afforded the opportunity to sit down and work together to resolve the differences we might have in order to keep this important program alive and available to children in America who deserve and need good health care coverage."

Chabot, R-Westwood, voted AGAINST the veto override: "The vote today sends a message that we must work together in a bipartisan manner to pass an extension of the State Children’s Health Insurance Program. … I fully support the SCHIP program. I supported its creation in 1997, and I am a cosponsor of legislation that will extend and enhance this important program’s effectiveness in covering the children of families who need assistance the most."

Rep. Geoff Davis, R-Hebron, Ky., voted AGAINST the veto override: "I want my constituents to know that I fully support the reauthorization of SCHIP for the tens of thousands of Kentucky families that benefit from it each year. But, the SCHIP bill put before the House was irresponsible legislation that would have made it easier for illegal aliens to obtain benefits while at the same time massively expanding government-controlled healthcare."

Schmidt, R-Miami Township, voted AGAINST the veto override: "The governments program for providing health insurance to poor children is an excellent program. It must be continued. However, it must also be improved. Today 131,000 poor children in Ohio alone are uninsured even thought they qualify for Medicaid or SCHIP. These children must be our focus."

Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Lorain: "More than 81 percent of Americans support expanding the Children’s Health Insurance Program. Ohio children like Emily Danko, Tanner Stainbrook, and Seth Novak, rely on CHIP to stay healthy. Those who voted today to uphold the president’s shameful veto should travel across Ohio and meet with these families one-on-one. Ohio voters and Ohio children were ignored today. I’m extremely disappointed."

Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Louisville: "Now that the veto has been sustained, it’s time to move forward with a serious plan to extend health coverage for those SCHIP was meant to cover: low-income children. It’s time to stop the campaign ads and time to start working across party lines to forge a bipartisan compromise."

Sen. George Voinovich, R-Cleveland: "We all want to cover more uninsured children but we should not unnecessarily increase a government program beyond its intent when the private sector is already providing coverage. … Our bill looks at the big picture and finds ways to increase funding for SCHIP while using the tax code to insure millions of children."

No suprises here, now the local neocons want to get down to business and help the kids after they uphold Bushes veto. There is nothing left to discuss until a new congress is elected. I for one will be voting against every republican I can. Osama Bin Laden would be better representation than anyone associated with the GOP. I hope when Jean Schmidt and Steve Chabot lose their seats in Congress that they find no possible employment options in this area and are forced into poverty. Maybe then compassion will set in. Until then rot in the hell you've turned our counrty into.

So extending the coverage to families with an income up to $45,000 is "Socialized medicine"?
That equates to two people working full-time and making $10.82/hr. (And that is the very top end of the new proposal)

If these so-called representatives were exposed to any health care reality other than their fully-paid-for bloated government employee coverage that has no resemblance to those offered private employees, they might know that it is the exception, rather than the rule, that people making $10/hr even have an option to get coverage from thier employer. Those who do, have plan "contibutions" that run into the hundreds of dollars per month and provide only the most basic coverage, which involves significan additonal expense in deductibles and co-pays.

It seems odd that $7 billion/yr for "socialized Medicine" is perceived as inherently evil by the Republicans, but spending over $700 billion to support "socialized" Big Oil (as the noted wild-eyed liberal Alan Greenspan has indicated as the essential reason for the Iraq War)is good policy.

This issue is about sick kids suffering and dying, it is that simple. Evidently, these folks only empathize for those suffering and dying while in uniform to serving to maximize the stock
portfolios of the elite they represent.

The democRATS in Congress have no real power. Bush will strike them down again and again and the RATS can't do anything about it.

Maybe so, but the the people electing the "RATS" can do something about it. Witness last November. That will prove to be only a mild foreshadowing of November 2008.

Shouldn't Repubs and all people realize that these "kids', whom our nation is not producing enough of, will be the ones necessary to pay their future Social Security benefits? Let's make or keep them healthy so they can produce for us when we need it.

Todays' kids, especially the lower income ones, will also be who the Repubs will be counting on to fight the terrorists and other countries in our endless wars. Let's keep them healthy so they can do our fighting.

Sherrod Brown,

I've spent my life working as a representative of the American healthcare system. I have, throughout my career, looked into the eyes of many working families who do not have health insurance. I have gone door to door all throughout Southern Ohio and visited thousands of people in their homes. This problem is everywhere. Healthcare coverage is becoming more and more expensive. This problem goes beyond the people who do not have health coverage. This problem affects every single working family, every single senior citizen and every single small business in my Congressional district. I am ashamed of how the Congresswoman from the 2nd district voted on this piece of legislation. And I am ashamed that she did not vote to override the Predsident's veto of this most basic fundamental right. It is not a child's fault if he or she is born poor.

If a Democrat doesn't win the Ohio 2nd district this time... the next time we have an election in Southern Ohio, I will run for Congress again and I will try to win every single county in the district. I promise...

Sherrod, We are proud to have you as our United States Senator. If only people like our Congresswoman had half the heart that you do, many more people would know what it feels like to actually be living the "American Dream".

Your trusted and loyal constituent,

Jim Parker, MHA / MBA, FACHE
Future Democratic Candidate for US Congress
Southern Ohio - 2nd District

3:02 anon >> agree
but keep it simple so we all can understand >> keep our youngsters healthy so they can support our Soc Sec (& Medicare) and fight our unwinnable wars for us!

Who could possibly reject that plan?

Why focus on 'expanding health benefits for little babies,' when their parents are going utterly without health care coverage?

How does it make any sense to give benefits for infants and children, and also to the very aged and infirm, yet have that "donut hole" in the middle?

EG, people who are expected to work at low-wage jobs and pay their own medical bills (which if at all serious, could be actually 'catastrophic' in terms of family finances.)

Either come up with a plan for universal health coverage or just give up on the idea altogether.

Other nations have health coverage for their citizens....they must have some plans and ideas we can adapt for ourselves.

However, if we just subsidize the baby-makers.....we will certainly get more babies to take care of.

Huxley could not have said it better! Just substitute “Breeders” for baby-makers.
Boy, just think of the health care crises we would be in if the 40m aborted Americans would have lived…wait a minute…isn’t that the increase in number of wage-earners needed to support social security in the next 20 years? You know, the number of hard-workers we need to legalize to make up for the money that the grafters have stolen from the American people????

Sharrod Brown,
81%????? Liar!!!!!! You know you’re a novelty act that got in because the people were sick of that RINO DuhWine…….don’t get too comfortable.

Jim Parker is the type of candidate that America's been looking for!

I'm not one bit surprised that our local representatives voted as they did. It's the Republican way after all. God forbid that America might wise up and join the other first world countries!

I wonder if all the people who repeat the rightwing attack radio nonsense about 'socialized' medicine or 'Hillarycare' also head to the fainting couch over our other government run programs? I don't hear many hissy-fits from them as they drive the Federal Interstates, use the US Post Office, send their kids to public schools, salute the Military, or take Grandma to a doctor that Medicare will pay for. It's an abomination that we are the most advanced and richest nation on earth and we have people living in terrible fear that they might get sick and lose everything they worked for as a consequence. Shame on us.

To usefullidiot

You're entitled to your opinion of course, but it must be painful living in a child's fairy tale world where politicians you disagree with take on monster-like qualities. Say 'Hillary' and you probably have a mental picture of her with green skin, a huge mole on her chin, and long sharp nails. Yikkes!.

While it's commendable to not want handouts and welfare, you should remember that corporate America isn't shy about taking every dollar they can wring out of DC. I hope you're equally outraged by the thought of Exxon getting billions in subsidies as you are at a middle class child getting needed medical care on the public dime. Sometimes emotional response need to be tempered by priorities.

My Dear Linda,

You are profeticaly right about my problem with HR Clinton, all of the Jeagermeister at the Donnerschwabin hall can't erase this.

I do not beleive in corp handouts, I beleive in HR25, and a 10% of GNP cap on fed spending. Tort reform would also be a nice touch.

I want the Goverment out of the health, education and retirement buisness. I want the IRS gestapo disbanded, and I want to get on a plane without a forigner wanding me in the jewls. Most of all, I want the grey-suited grafters to quit using kids to increase Goverment. It's worn out.......
