RE: Hamilton County Treasurer Recommends “No” on Issue 27

DATE: October 17, 2007

Hamilton County Treasurer announces opposition to jail tax TODAY!
Robert Goering says Issue 27 is “too much money, too much tax”

Today, Hamilton County Treasurer Robert Goering will announce that he is joining with opponents of the jail tax in encouraging voters to oppose Issue 27 on the November ballot. Goering will make the announcement at a press conference at 2623 Erie Avenue at 2:30 PM today, Wednesday, October 17, 2007. Among other things, Goering will say “The proposed $700 million dollar tax is not a jail tax, but a ‘Commissioners Spend Tax.’ If we want a jail tax, a third of that amount is sufficient, according to my calculations. The Commissioners want to have lots of extra funds to spend on who knows what....I cant figure it out, and I don’t think voters can either.” The announcement is significant for a number of reasons. First, because of the weight Goering carries with voters. Second, Goering is taking on powerful leaders in his own party in joining with anti-Issue 27 forces. Third, Goering has been relatively quiet on tax issues in the past. Fourth, Rob Goering is an expert on County finances, serving as Treasurer for more than 16 years ”We are pleased that Rob Goering — who is intimately familiar with County finances — took the time to carefully analyze the jail tax proposal and concluded as each of us has — that this is a super-sized jail tax that we simply cannot afford,” said WeDemandABetterPlan.Com Chairman Jason Gloyd. “He holds enormous respect with the voters. We applaud Rob’s independence, insight and courage in speaking out against this bad policy direction for our community and are pleased to join him in this significant battle.

Aside from the fact that this is one of the worst written press releases I've ever seen (along with the equally unimpressive list of organizations against Issue 27), it's factually incorrect.

It's not a jail tax. It's a comprehensive safety plan. I find it hard to believe that the County Treasurer can't make that distinction.

Issue 27 opponents refuse to refer to this as the safety plan; rather they try to play on the ignorance of uninformed voters who make decisions based upon sound bites without doing any research on their own. By continuing to call this a "jail tax"; by continuing to falsely say that the jail will cost $700 million; by continuing to refuse to acknowledge that the safety plan covers construction and operation of the jail in addition to social programs, they hope to scare voters into voting No on Issue 27 all so they can save a few pennies.

In the midst of all this fear-mongering, not once has any opponent offered up a solution. The problem isn't going away on its own.

We should expect reasonable answers to the obvious questions:

1) We do we need a tax increase to "operate" the new jail? We already have a budget to run the current jails and the proposal is to consolidate, so shouldn't it actually cost less to run?

2) Money is supposedly included for money for new programs that reduce the repeat offender problem.
Obvious question >> if we actually do that, why would we need a new jail at all? DeWine ask Pepper that yesterday and the reponse was "Uh actually, what we're trying to do is REDUCE the rate of INCREASE." Priceless.

These 2 questions are just for starters but I won't be holding my breath.

"...they hope to scare voters into voting No on Issue 27 all so they can save a few pennies...."

They don't even care to save a few pennies, because they were 4 a sales tax, before they were against it !

Unlike the current plan, the former proposal was for 30 years and only served to make the lender wealthy !

This is partisan politics, PERIOD !

da, da, da whine, is grasping at straws because his job is on the line !

The hypocrites are willing to do anything to hold power, regain power !

They can no longer 'coast' through life and no one is willing to hindlick 'finney's fanny' !

They can no longer work their crony, back-room deals and give away county assets for one third their value (Drake) !

They don't care about community improvement, only what can get the wRong wingnut whackos elected and use the local FOP to do it !

As such, we think that there needs to be Regional Law Enforcement under the direction of Hamilton County Sheriff !

The CPD, local FOP, has demonstrated that they are willing to play partisan politics, so they should get a political education !

Taxpayers can reduce the cost of law enforcement by merging the local and county police force like they did in Louisville, Lexington !

How would the local FOP, wRong wingnut whackos, like that one ?

The wRong wingnut whackos are not interested in saving tax payer money, else they would have made the merger a recommendation !

PATHETIC !

Sean Donovan is right: Jason Gloyd is an “uninformed, nondescript puppet.” The question remains: whose sock-puppet is Gloyd?

I'm glad the treasurer - an expert in the field of county finances - has weighed in --- Sooo.... Sir, where's YOUR plan on how to solve our budget deficit, how do we replenish the reserves, and how can we intiiate programs to reduce the jail intake without having funding to do it?

Please, please, please Mr. Goering - offer up a "better plan" or admit you're just towing political rantings.

What IS your answer to any of the questions above, Sir.

......

I know, I know, ... you don't have one.

16 years in office. Never a word about how to solve anything.

1:40 anon has answered the questions that have perplexed me.

Why do we need a new jail when the murder rate is dropping significantly (Deters says it's "exploding") and Sheriff Leis is renting out jail space?

Why do we need more money to run the new jail vs. the old fragmented jails?

1:40's answer >> we need it to solve a budget deficit and replenish reserves >> maybe that's a legitimate point but that's not what's being "sold".

Why is Portune suddenly quiet? Too principled to get in on this swindle?? Good for you.

7:14. We can't continue to have the Butler County deal if we don't have the funds. We can't continue to have the Sheriff's patrols in the city, if we don't have the funds. We certainly can't make any improvements , without the funds.

We are broke -- do you not get that? The spending of the former board majority has driven us into the red.

The philospophy of "do more with less" has been played out and is spent out. And where has that gotten us?

After the most recent board's "cut and run" tactics on the budget and county services - we cannot afford to even maintain the cut-to-the-minimum services the county currently has.

(Granted, Heimlich didn't cut and run, he was ran out by the plethora of families his fiscal policies harmed.)

Bottom line is - you know this - we can either drown in debt, continue to cut service after service -- or we can pony up, and step up to meet the needs of our community

For those in the anti-safety crowd who worry so much about the will of the voters -- don't you remember, the will of the voters said loud and clear, we don't want any more of the COAST fiscal policies ruining the quality of life in Hamilton County.

That IS what this is all about - quality of life verses staying alive.
Voters chose quality of life, not just survival in the jungle of stupid fiscal regimes.

I have almost all negative vibes about this deal but the most convincing positive thing so far, was Dusty Rhoads supporting it - I'd like to hear his rationale because he has earned my trust.

Leis/Pepper/Portune/Deters - I don't trust any of them.

Leis/Pepper/Portune/Deters - I don't trust any of them.

And nor should you. Few politicians in this area, of any party, can be trusted to put the people's needs before their own. Especially the above 4.
