I'll raise your Goering one Rhodes

Hamilton County Treasurer, Robert Goering comes out today against the sales tax.

But the pro sales tax folks just sent this out:

Auditor Rhodes: Issue 27 Makes Fiscal Sense

(October 17, 2007) -- In a press release issued by Issue 27 opponents today, County Treasurer Robert Goering is quoted as supporting a jail-only tax. But this proposal is exactly what voters rejected last year because it was not a responsible or comprehensive solution.

Issue 27, which is on the ballot this November, builds the facility that is needed, pays for its operations for 30 years (which the prior plan did not do), adds police to the street, and funds rehabilitation programs so prisoners don’t re-offend. It is a Comprehensive Safety Plan, and polls show that such an approach is supported by a majority of voters.

“This is an honest, thoughtful plan that makes sense for the taxpayer,” said Dusty Rhodes, county auditor, well known for being a strong fiscal conservative. “It makes no sense to build a jail and then have no funds for operations.”

The Republican Party, Democratic Party, Charter Party, and numerous elected officials have endorsed the plan, along with a broad cross-section of civic organizations.

County officials confirmed that Treasurer Goering has not once met, nor asked any questions of other county officials, about the plan before today’s announcement, including its financial details. He also did not attend any of the many public hearings about the plan, a number of which occurred in the same building where Goering’s office is housed.

Robert Goering is not a Democrat. He's a Republican

The super-sized safety planners want a new jail to replace 3 old "crumbling" facilities. They say we have to do this because operation and maintenance costs are getting too high.

Now they're saying that operation costs for the new jail are going to be even higher than what we spent to operate the old facilities. Why in the world should we invest in a program that's less efficient than what we're doing now?

Go back to the drawing board, sharpen your pencils, and come see the voters when you have something that will SAVE us money.

We demand a better plan.

Sounds like Goering fits in perfectly with the opposition. He has no idea what the plan involves, just like the rest of them.

Mark Miller - Your question is the very obvious one to an open-minded individual - but all we get from the proponents is "this proposal is better because it provides money to operate the new jail". Unbelievable.
Folks, if you move into a new house, do you plan for expenses for the old house + the new house? No. Although maybe I would if taxpayers were paying.
NO WAY!

"Goering has no idea what the plan involves". How would he (or we) since, so far, it is "throw 700+ million at our safety problem" and we will all feel better & feel safe (that's good, right?).
Deja Vu all over again - Bengals stadium (Ham Co Commis Bedinghaus) & Freedom Center (Senior Pepper).

We won't be fooled again!

Miller and anon 6:57 --
C'mon guys, I know you can read and write, surely you have a grasp on the math.
The Justice Center is double bunking, ONLY with the temporary permission of the federal courts. The situation violates the rights of inmates (which I really wouldn't care about except that, if three of them throw in a nickle each they can sue the heck out of us for violating state and federal law)

So, when the inmates are housed condusive to law - it will require more man power.

C'mon guys - everybody else knows this. Maybe your comprehension skills are what needs to be sharpened, at least before you pick up a pencil ( or your keyboard) and start blogging ignorant stuff again.

Here, backup, maybe this will help:
1 + 1 =2 and See Jane. See Jane run.

It's elementary folks - or just more lies

So, Just Go Go-ering, what's your plan? I'm tired of locking my doors in the middle of the afternoon when heliCOPters are shining search beams into my neighborhood looking for another crack head who robbed the local grocer.

And what is your expert advice about county finances regarding the budget shortfall? how are we going to pay for the Butler deal without cutting more services to seniors, mr/dd and foster care?

Instead of talking, put some darn numbers on a piece of paper and share them with the rest of us if you have the mysterious and elusive "better plan" that escapes the rest of us.

Talk is cheap - let's see YOUR numbers

Really scary that the county's financial treasurer is managing our budget by politics and not by the numbers.

His position just doesn't add up.

Rhodes is tighter than bark on a tree and a regular attendee at COAST events - if he says this is the only fiscally responsible way to solve the problem, I have to buy it and pay my extra nickle in taxes because Rhodes makes COAST look like a cabal of social service agents.

Gee, I don't know - he (or you) could just read about it. It's not like they are keeping the plan a secret.

In Goering's case, he works in the same building as the commissioners. Sounds to me like he's just lazy.

anon 9:56 >> I read the web site BEFORE I commented. If that's what convinced you, I've got a nice bridge for you, cheap.

"Add police to the street across the County" (3, 100 or 1000, 1%, 5% 10%??)

"Better opportunities ... for at-risk youth" That can't be a bad thing, right but what-in-the-world does it mean?

With the Counties track record (Family Services, Bengals, etc.) why trust them on this one??
Pepper has said he wanted to make the treatment program a nationwide model. I'd be thrilled if he would just say "we've looked around the country for what works and we're going to pattern after that".

1- the safety plan IS modeled after the best practices across the country - idiots & you claim you've read the plan?

2 - Lay the Bengals, Banks and Family Services problems at the feet of those responsible - your conservative fiscal watchdogs - while you're at it -- the BWC, unbid contracts, pay to play -- that's their baby too

3 - the reason we have such HIGH needs now is the neglect to address problems for the last 2 decades - fixing the problems has been laid at the feet of those who were shouted down for years

4 - hey, the mental health levy, the elder services levy, etc --- none specify EXACTLY what funds will be spent on , so let's ignore the checks and balances inherent in the plain language of the law

1:56 - So you believe the garbage and lies that DeWine is feeding you? You do realize that DeWine is only against the tax because he thinks it will get him re-elected, right? He has no plan, and, just like the rest of the anti-safety plan people, I bet you don't either.

Never mind Todd. I'm sorry I insulted your intelligence; really, I'm ashamed of myself. I won't do it again.
