Endorsements galore
Both sides of the Hamilton County sales tax increase (Issue 27) are getting showered with endorsements this week. Wednesday County Treasurer Robert Goering announced his support of the anti-sales tax campaign. Also Wednesday sales tax proponents said County Auditor Dusty Rhodes has given his endorsement of the tax.
Thursday more groups came out. The national tax-fighting group Americans for Prosperity announced it is joining the opposition and sending out mailers (click here and here to view) to urge a "no" vote.
Meanwhile three local civic groups, the Cincinnatus Association, Democracy for Cincinnati and the Bridgetown Civic Association announced their endorsement of the sales tax.
The sales tax revenue would pay to build and operate a new 1,800 bed jail and pay for public safety programs. Voters will decide Nov. 6.

Democracy for Cincinnati? You mean that group of like 10 people who meet once a month and don't do anything but gab about politics? Geez, with "activists" like these, it's a wonder Democrats ever win at anything.
Proponents speak in inspiring generalities ("More opportunities for at-risk youth").
Mr. Cappell of WeDemandABetterPlan.org, presents data that can be either confirmed or refuted.
Ex., No male inmates have been "early released" in more than a year. A chart showing that the number last year was over 100. Sheriff Leis?
Do you want to make decisions based on facts or feelings?
Americans for Prosperity is best called Americans for Me, Me, Me and not you.
Wow - I love seeing people come out in force, whatever their beliefs - democracy is still alive in Hamilton County no matter how uninformed one side is ...
I guess it's up to each of us to figure out on our own who does and doesn't get it.
You've got the COAST group who cut services for the elderly, the mentally retarded and threw a fit when Portune wanted to upgrade our tornado sirens ( not so frivolous now, eh?)
And then you have Leis acting like a fool; putting his reputation on the line, and crossing the line, in order to get this thing passed.
"Law and Order" Republicans siding with Democrats, Liberal NAACP leadership jumping ship and swimming with COAST in order to keep the jails closed down.
This is the strangest political mix ever. Think it through folks.
How much you want to bet those mailers will be sent primarily to the "high-crime" areas of the county? Criminals don't want more jail space, so naturally they will vote No.

While I realize not all criminals have committed felonies, a large portion of them do eventually get convicted of one. And then they cannot vote, unless they go through the legal process of having their voting rights reinstated.

Correct, and the truth is that most crminals with misdemeanors don't vote either as the majority have outstanding warrants and registering just give the police a tool to find them.
VOTE NO ON ISSUE 27!
I rest my case.
To the person who keeps saying "criminals of cincinnati said...VOTE NO ON ISSUE 27!" I will be voting no on issue 27 but I'm not a criminal. Your message says so little but speaks volumes about you. You where born and raised here right. I thought so. I've been fortunate enough to travel a bit. So I'm able to spot those ignorant backward Cincinnati views that could only be inbred here in the Queen City.
Good point 11:57 about "strangest political mix".
As Winston Churchill said, "democracy is the worst political system except for all others".
As Homer Simpson said, "When are people going to learn? Democracy doesn't work."
11:57 anon >> "think it through"? I'm afraid the powers that be have correctly surmised that we, the voting public, don't have that capability.
We got royally duped by the Commissioners on the Bengals contract (I'm glad we have an NFL team, at least in name, but the contract is ridiculousy one-sided).
This jail deal feels very familar.
Then it was "we'll be a backwater town without an NFL franchise" (OK but couldn't we have expected a sensible contract?).
Now it's "criminals will be running amok & the murder rate is exploding" & "look at all these assault weapons". (OK, build a jail & then really justify the other $500 million you want us to approve).
To all the proponents who are waiting to call me an "idiot without an alternative", save your keystrokes. It's been done.
So you have an alternative to share, or what? Stop keeping us in suspense.
