Goering becomes target

Things got a little ugly on the sales tax front Wednesday when Hamilton County Treasurer Rob Goering, a Republican, announced he was against the jail sales tax increase.

He might have just as well posted a target on his forehead.

The ugliness started in the morning when opposition camp chairman Jason Gloyd put out the press release, announcing Goering is encouraging a "no" vote. It included an expected quote from Goering "The commissioners want to have lots of extra funds to spend on who knows what... I can't figure it out and I don't think voters can either."

And Gloyd noted the treasurer "took the time to carefully analyze the jail tax proposal and concluded-- as each of us has -- that this is a super-sized jail tax that we simply cannot afford."
Not so, said Commissioner David Pepper, a Democrat.

"He doesn't know the details of the plan. He's not asked one question about this," Pepper said. "He doesn't want to meet and discuss it. It's all politics. Those who have asked (for details) have supported it."

Commissioner Todd Portune, also a Democrat, went a little further.

"He's attempting to deflect attention from his (shortcomings,)" Portune said. "He's ... contributed to the county's fiscal problems by letting delinquent taxes rise to an unprecedented level. It's political grandstanding at its worst."

Commissioner Pat DeWine, a Republican, supported his new ally.
"We ought to have respect for someone who has had the courage to come out against this. I appreciate the courage of Rob to stand up," he said.

Apparently between the commissioners' comments (around 10:30) and the Goering/DeWine/anti-sales tax camp press conference (2:30), Goering was bombarded with phone calls from the commissioners, the sheriff, the administration, seeking meetings and offering to explain the plan.

Goering still came out against the tax at the press conference, held in front of COAST attorney Chris Finney's law office, citing numbers that DeWine had given him.

"I don't like taxes. I really don't like tax issues and this tax is too much for our community," he said. "To build the jail its $200 million. To fund it its $300 million. Why are we at $770 million? Goering asked.

But afterward the criticism continued as Portune said his comments show he hasn't examined the plan. The rest of the money goes to treatment programs.

"For him to (oppose the tax) when he doesn't even have an elementary understanding of the facts confirms my comments about how inappropriate his comments are," Portune said via phone later in the day.

Interesting point. We have the jail tax, the streetcars, the Banks...and the only person we are sure is out of the loop is our mayor who is frolicking in a foreign land with his bodygaurd close by.

Hamilton County Treasurer Rob Goering is just another sock-puppet like Pat DeWhiner and Jason Gloat. The real question is: who's pulling the strings of these three stooges?

Just look at the losers at that press conference. COAST is TOAST.

Lie down with NAACP dogs like Smitherman and you will get fleas.

Hamilton County Prediction

The jail tax is not going to pass. Here is why it is going to fail. The problem with politics is that people keep electing the biggest spenders. People keep electing people who have never had to worry about their own money. So whay would they even so much as think about spending yours?

The politics of Hamilton County needs a major change.

I've always liked Goering - but taking up with COAST - Geez, after Heimlich's campaign disaster, you'd think he'd know not to be caught in their rip tide.

I've been up and down on this issue numerous times because DeWine gets everyone worked up into a frenzy. But when you do explore the final plan it is about making this community a better community.

It's time to stop DeWine and his puppetmaster Phil Heimlich from placing more hurdles in the way of making this county work and run smoothly.

Vote Yes on Issue 27. Don't be fooled by Finney, DeWine, Heimlich and their power hungry politics!!!!!!

Once again, anyone who opposes Issue 27 is hit with one personal attack after the other. This pattern has been repeating itself for months.

I don't seem to remember Todd Opportune attacking Goering before yesterday. Goering's performance in office seemed to be just fine, until he opposed the huge Sales Tax hike. Now that Goering takes a stand against higher taxes he's under attack on an issue that Opportune didn't have any complaints about prior to yesterday.

The arrogance of Pepper and Portune is astonishing. They also attack Goering because he didn't speak to them personally about Issue. Based on that, they claim he can't be informed. Are Pepper/Portune saying the only way to inform yourself about this plan is to talk with them directly? What happened to this open government they claimed they'd be bringing? Any citizen should be able to inform themselves about Issue 27 without speaking to Pepper or Portune themselves.

That is a racist comment. You need to apologize. I am disgusted at the racist comments Smitherman and the Black community have suffered during this campaign.

Pepper/Portune/Leis and their supporters need to understand something - slavery is over. Black people are allowed to think for themselves. They do not need whitey making all their decisions for them. They have looked at this plan, and like most who have, realize it is bad for all of Hamilton County. If you don't agree with them, state the disagreement without resorting to racial slurs.

He is only the treasurer folks. He has never voted on a tax issue his entrie life. He invests the county resources and does not have a dog in the fight. If he wants to talk tax policy run for real office where you have to made real choices.

Goering is asleep at the wheel. The tax proposal has been on the street for five months, but he chimes in two weeks before the election. What a puppet and B-rated politican...I would not vote for him for even a school board now.

What a has been! Goering does not have a clue! He got sucked into the belly of the evil side of the GOP. It is too late, COAST, Finney, DeWine, Brinkman are going down. GOP needs leaders with solutions, not whiners and bullies. Please do not let the grand old party slide into the swill they spill.

How cool, another republican gets punked into the DeWine myth. Daddy is gone, Pat is toast in 2008.

Who knows more about County budget than Goering? He doesn't support us >> so crucify him!!

"He has never voted on a tax issue his ENTRIE life." Learn how to spell or sober up.

You all need Bob Bedinghaus to push this mess through - too bad he's very gainfully employed by Mike Brown.

Government finance 101...the treasurer does not develop, project, or monitor the budget...he only invests the money. He knows as much about the county budget as he does about the criminal justice system...nothing. If I am wrong, he would be developing solutions to the $35 million county budget deficit. See if he stands up in front of the microphone on that very real problem.

This whole thing is bogus. What a waste of time.

How are we going to help those that are in need of a second chance?

How are we going to begin to invest in the children of this community?

How are we going to make it easier for those of the next generation?

Vote Yes on Issue 27!!!!!!!!!
