Harris: Here's My Anti-Poverty Plan

A day after U.S. Census figures show Cincinnati to be the third poorest city in the country, City Council candidate Greg Harris releases an anti-poverty plan. A member of Gov. Ted Strickland's workforce policy board, he says he'll "advocate for comprehensive strategies geared towards building capital among minority populations that have endured a multi-generational disadvantage in wealth creation."

The plan includes: working with local unions to get more minorities in apprenticeship programs; working with "effective consumer education non-profits like Smart Money in Over-the-Rhine" to combat the fleecing of the working poor by check-cashing stores, high-interest loans and predatory lenders; and develop partnerships between the Great Oaks career and tech center with programs targeting high-school dropouts, at-risk students and the working poor.

Read the whole plan here.

I'm glad to see that Harris wants to spend money on this rather than making sure people are even safe in the first place

Anon 10:11 - Wow, geez, I didn't know Harris was anti-safety!

Some folks think connecting youth to good jobs will prevent them from becoming criminals. It's a real novel idea.

Harris has some great ideas. For some reason, the Enquirer has not covered his police reform plan.

It is thoughtful and balanced. Unlike other attempts at police reform, it is solution-oriented, not blame-oriented.

Implementing them now during a relatively controversy-free period, would be far preferable to rolling it out after the next crisis.

The sad thing is: with the people running for council this year, Harris has NO shot. If he finishes 14, I'll be surprised :(

Looks like Jane has found her replacement for Mr. Pepper after his mayoral defeat.

Keep pluggin' and chuggin' Jane: eventually someone you shill for will be elected and might hire you.

Let's see . . . you are actually faulting Jane for sharing with readers a plan sent out by a Council candidate in response to the news that Cincinnati is 3rd in the nation in poverty?!

Do you think she was ignoring the plans sent to her by other canddiates? Hell no. No other canddiates sent her anything.

You go Jane. Keep covering the issues!

I wonder what Harris' plan is to keep Repugnicant sex offender politicians away from our children.

what's a "repugnicant"?

I just don't think it's a "reporter's" job to pimp for candidates, so yes, I fault Jane for doing so.

Unless you think it IS her job to be Harris's communications director? At least Bridget Doherty had the integrity to quit WLW to work for Pepper

Typical wRong wingnut whacko Harris failed high school civics !

Hello: State Rights, Community Rights !

Federal Guidelines are the minimum requirements !

Any state, community can enact stricter guidelines if they so choose. Especially when the communities money is involved !

Anti-poverty is not correct to change for which that has the authority !

But hey, I think the community also offers night-school in crime prevention!

Just a suggestion !

PATHETIC !

HAD ENOUGH, VOTE DEMOCRAT 2007 !

Anon 8:41am - reporting on a candidate's positions is not "pimping." It's reporting. You are probably someone else's supporter who is trying to cry favoritism so Jane won't cover Harris anymore. I encourage Jane to continue to report on any candidate who puts out detailed plans that go beyond sound bites.

Bold type guy . . . you have issues. You deride a Democrat who put out an anti-poverty plan with a bunch of non-sensical banter, and then proceed to say vote Democrat in 2007. Take your med's.

no, but you must if you support "reporting" in the form of Jean Schmidt-style cutting and pasting of talking points.

It's interesting that you don't criticize such REPORTING when Jane writes about Leslie Ghiz on the school levy (which, by the way, I think is a good piece). I think your real gripe is her coverage of Greg Harris, and I imagine you probably are trying to apply pressure on behalf of another campaign.

I think Jane is establishing a good standard. If candidates come out with substanative statements on issues of the day, she'll post this on the politcal blog. I think this is refreshing. Those candidates who don't have substanative responses on important issues simply don't earn the coverage.

Can someone in the psychiatric ward please medicate the "all italics, all exclamation points, all the time" liberal moonbat nutjob who posted above? Or at least restrict his internet access?

Your revolution is over, Mr. Moonbat. Condolences. The bums lost. My advice is to do what your parents did; get a job, sir. The bums will always lose. Do you hear me, Moonbat? The bums will always lose!
