White House balks at bill with Banks $$

Remember the Water Resources Development Act? The one with a $25 million authorization for the downtown Cincinnati riverfront park to go with the Banks development? The one that Rep. Jean Schmidt, R-Miami Township, voted for while Rep. Steve Chabot, R-Westwood, and Leader John Boehner, R-West Chester, didn't?

Ahh. That bill. The one Chabot and Boehner derided as being full of so-called pork projects.

Well, it turns out the Bush administration thinks so too.

A statement put out Friday by the White House budget office says the bill would have a "significant overall cost," to the tune of at least $15 billion.

"Although many of the projects authorized by the bill have undergone a merit-based review, there are many others that have not, and therefore may be wasteful spending," the statement said.

It continues: "In a time when fiscal restraint is much needed, the additional spending authorized in this bill, such as provisions for local wastewater and drinking water infrastructure projects, is unacceptable."

The White House budget office – yes, that would be the same office headed by Terrace Park's own Rob Portman – said in its statement that it "strongly opposes" the bill.

So put Portman down next to Chabot and Boehner for opposing the bill with the Banks money.

Jean lies and flip-flops like a Democrat, now she's voting like one. We need a Republican in that seat, not a tax and spend RHINO.

Hey Phil Heimlich, if you need a job look in the classifieds, because you have no business running for this seat. You did nothing for 4 years as County Commissioner.
No Jail + No Banks = Ineffective Bureaucrat.

All the best,
I-71 Commuter

Wasn't this the money Phil Heimlich claimed was already guaranteed when he pitched the project to the developers?

I-71 C., Congresswoman Jean Schmidt is not a rhino. She's a human being. She's not a RINO either. She and Geoff Davis voted for this appropriations bill, because it would benefit both their districts. Every bloody time a conservative member of Congress votes for an appropriation bill of any kind for any purpose, folks like you get all bent out of shape and cry RINO. You should be crying BULL, because that's what your objections amount to.

It's good to see that the White House will be opposing Jean Schmidt's big spending plans. Now the voters need to oppose Mean Jean the next time she's on the ballot.

With friends like this in the Greater Cincinnati area - who the heck needs enemies.

They all supported the Bengals stadium concept and the war-mongerers and big oil making huge profits during this time of fiscal restraint - but they won't support the region's biggest development project in decades!

Losers! Is this a little political sabotage because the county board went democrat? What idiots.

Steve Chabot continues his longstanding record of ineffective incompetence by continually voting against the interests of Cincinnati and the rest of his district. When are voters going to sit up and realize that this man is a disgrace and needs to be booted to the curb?

Driehaus in 08!

ABSOLUTELY DRIEHAUS!

I told Steve Chabot as he stood with a sign on a corner in Colerain, start voting your value and stop playing follow the leader with the Republican Party.

Obviously, he is still towing the line - a line he should be at the end of in 2008.

And that's really sad, I wanted to believe in him.

I'm a Democrat but you have to admire Chabot's principles here. I wish my party would split these projects up for seperate up and down votes. I'd imagine Chabot would vote for it then but he isn't willing to compromise on many of the other senseless projects included.

Most civilized people would call this form of appopriating "bribery."

anonymous 5/12 11:07 PM - are you talking about the same Steve Chabot that voted against the President's big-spending Medicare Prescription drug plan, Laura Bush's NEA, and against numerous budget bills because of all the pork? Claiming that Chabot follows the leader is an extremely uninformed statement about his voting record.
