More on whether to parole a cop killer
After being criticized last week for voting differently than the rest of Cincinnati City Council on a resolution to oppose a cop killer’s parole, Councilman David Crowley today sent the Ohio Parole Board a letter saying he doesn’t want Roland Reaves out.
Reaves was convicted of the 1974 shooting death of Officer David Cole. He was initially sentenced to death, but had his sentence commuted to life in prison. He could get paroled after a hearing this month.
When Councilman Chris Monzel introduced a resolution last week urging the parole authority to keep Reaves behind bars, Crowley was the only one to vote against it. He wasn’t suggesting Reaves should get out, he said, he was merely saying he didn’t have enough information about Reaves’ behavior in prison to weigh in. He said parole officials would know better than council members did.
Crowley’s vote prompted Councilman Jeff Berding, a fellow Democrat, to say Crowley might have a “warped values system.”
In the letter Crowley sent Friday to the parole board, he wrote that he has been troubled by the resulting “fabricated and untrue” claims by some that his vote meant he was advocating for Reaves’ release. He wrote that that was the wrong message to send to the parole authority, police department, Cole’s family and the residents of Hamilton County.
So Crowley researched Reaves’ 32-year history behind bars and found Reaves has been accused of threatening, fighting, disobeying orders and having weapons.
“I regret that for political gain my position on this matter has been maliciously mischaracterized, resulting in confusion among the citizens of Cincinnati, the family of Officer Cole and the brave men and women of our police department about where I stand,” Crowley wrote. “Let me be clear that the suggestion that I am somehow sympathetic or advocate the killing of police officers is absurd.”
After news of Crowley's letter went out, Republicans praised what they viewed as the councilman's change of heart. They wondered if the You Tube video posted by the Republican Party earlier this week had anything to do with it. In the video, they urged people to call Crowley's office and tell him to change his mind. See the video here.
John Eby, a Republican candidate for council, said "God love him" for writing the letter, but "when we needed one voice, he should have stood up."

Why does Berding like to allign with Republicans to lie about Democrats?
Weak !
What do they know that we don't ?
Now, sock puppet parole board lacks integrity !
Reaves continues to post anonymously in support of his own rhetoric defense !
He highjacks a topic to shamelessly promote himself for release!
Other than claiming to be the best cook in the kitchen, he is a shallow, killer !
Although he is sincere that his ego elevates him to be the best prisoner, he really is only a legend in his own mind in his cell!
He has nothing to offer, PERIOD !
He has promised not to do crimes and yet continues to be defiant?
He is a flip-flopper, Period !
That being said, we like Crowley !
He is personable enough, but, he is big time Naive !
PATHETIC !
HAD ENOUGH, VOTE DEMOCRAT 2007 !
Looks like Crowley pulled off a pretty blatant flip-flop.
How can anyone support this man?
Honestly, I don't give a rat's rear end if Roland Reaves became a minister & was preaching Sunday services for the last 32 years. This cop killer got a lucky break in having his death sentence commuted to life in prison.
Life in prison. It means just that. Not wasting our money on a hokey Parole Board hearing for this savage.
Seeing he's had a violent streak all these years, the Parole Board might want to cancel that little coffee & cookies meeting. When Reaves sees the stacks of mail against him & the PBs tell him he isn't getting out, he'll probably go screaming ape-sh*t crazy. I hope there's a padded cell available & enough Ritalin to calm that boy down.
As for Crowley, he's finished in City politics. He might want to polish up on his broom pushing skills. He'll be able to do that at his Mt. Adams bar in his next job.
But Jeff Berding said Crowley was against giving him parole. Jeff Berding doesn't lie. Oh wait, yes he does. Quite often actually. Yes, now that I think about it he lies more than anyone actually realizes.
That's one huge flip-flop by Crowley. Too bad he had to be forced into doing the right thing.
Crowley pulled no "flip flop" at all, he merely took the time to inform himself before expressing his opinion. Eby on the other hand advocates the ill considered knee jerk reaction, just what we don't need on Council.
Eby with his (and maybe Berding's) excursion to gutter politics has demonstrated precisely why he is unqualified to serve; Crowley has demonstrated why he is. God love him is right.

Good job sticking to your guns david! I am so disappointed in you. Shame on you for caving to the pressure.
Crowley is a liar and an idiot. And clearly he does have warped values if he can't state upfront that Reeves should not be released based upon ther fact that he help to participate in the killing of a police officer.
It does not matter what Reeves has done or not done since being locked up. What matters is that he helped to kill a police officer. Researching his prison record does nothing to change the fact that Reeves should be long dead already for that crime and that releasing him into the society that he harmed is wrong.
If Crowley can't see that denying a convicted cop killer parole is the right thing to do, then he is in fact showing support for cop killers by his lack of condemnation. Trying to ride the fence and claim that he needs to research anything to find the correct position on something so cut and dry shows incredible stupidity and/or an incredible lack of integrity.
Is this the John Eby that finished 15th last time?
The same John Eby that got more votes than Crowley in only 53 of the citys 375 precincts?
But now that he has teamed up with Jeff Berding he will surely do much better.
I am sorry but what is there to "research" about paroling a cop-killer sentenced to life in prison? Did Crowley need to hear from his MoveOn.Org buddies that it was OK to deny parole to a cop-killer?
And Crowley got elected how?
Eebs is a nice guy, but at the rate things are going, there isn't even going to be a Repugnicant Party by the time we get to November http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/us_and_americas/article1752381.ece
Anon @ 9:45 - I'm failing to see how Crowley didn't flip-flop. He casted a vote against opposing parole for Reaves, which is in effect a vote to support parole. He is now trying to dodge the flip-flop charge by saying he changed his mind after doing some research.
So, he either flip-flopped or casted an uninformed vote. No matter how you spin it, we shouldn't have council members making votes like this.
Crowley has no place on council, and I can't wait to see him lose in November.
Jeff, Miles, Melissa how are you getting any work done when you're so busy posting here as Anon? Crowley has more character and integrity in his little finger than Berding ever will.
He is a flip-flopper, Period !
That being said, we like Crowley !
He is personable enough, but, he is big time Naive !
PATHETIC !
You just don't get it do you? If you dislike flip-floppers so much why don't you look at yourself. If you want to dislike a flip-flopper dislike Crowley because he just pulled the biggest flip-flop this side of John Kerry!
The thing is, people don't have how Berding votes, they hate him ONLY because of his personality. He's a total "mean guy," for a better word
