A million bucks for the Freedom Center?

A million bucks for the Freedom Center?

That may be the current city budget plan - to give each of four Cincinnati arts institutions - the art museum, history museum, Music Hall and the Freedom Center - a total of $4 million. Not for operations, but in capital money.

Chris Bortz says that's what all of council agreed to last year as they finalized the budget.

Chris Monzel doesn't think so. He remembers back to the days when U.R.F.C. officials promised they wouldn't seek money from the city. He doesn't think the city should be giving any now, for capital projects or anything else.

"I keep saying (to other council members), 'Guys, are you kidding me?"

The $4 million issue is expected to come up Monday at council's finance committee, chaired by John Cranley. He helped put the brakes on Bortz's try a couple weeks ago to get council to immediately vote on the plan to give each $1 million. Cranley said it should go through his committee first for more discussion. He does not want some of the $4 million coming out of a revolving loan fund supposed to help neighborhoods develop business districts.

Funding for the Freedom Center - it opened in 2004 and is dedicated to recognizing the fight to end slavery - has been controversial before. Late last year, State Rep. Tom Brinkman, a Republican from Mount Lookout, openly criticized Freedom Center spending. Reps. Joseph Uecker, R-Loveland, and Bill Coley, R-West Chester, joined Brinkman in voting against new Freedom Center funding.

That $2 million in state funding was approved anyway. Then, center officials told legislators they needed the money to pay down $50 million in construction loans.

I'm so sick of hearing about this URFC needing money & then the taxpayers are put on the hook to keep this place solvent.

I believe the City's Finance Committee needs to take a look at the overly bloated salaries the operations people are collecting at this place.

However, this URFC is a monument for the ever-continuing racial guilt & an indirect form of reparations. Smells like larceny by trick to me.

The Freedom Center hasn't set anybody free!

John Pepper wants money for the Freedom Center while David Pepper wants more money for a new jail.

Let them pay for both themselves. Neither will make our community any better.

Bortz = out of touch rich kid with no grip on reality.

Why doesn't get just write a personal check to cover the million himself?

Pathetic.

Is Chris Bortz calling Chris Monzel a liar?

Or is Chris Monzel calling Chris Bortz a liar?

Brinkman and his band of little rich boys are racists - they can't stand the idea of standing WITH abolition - so they take any stand they can against it
In spite of the regions complaints and attacks against this incredible concept of a facility - honoring our biggest fight for American Freedom, they're continually evolving and using the FREEDOM for ALL concept to so many different applications.
This museum will be a national landmark one day - it will be an international attraction, standing for what Americans hold dear - but in the meanwhile, ignorant, racist people without culture and depth will continue to call it the National N***** Museum at their little private parties( guys you got an infiltrator)and hopefully, one day, their racist opposition will be an exhibit of its own showing the ugliness of this despicable group of antagonists.
They're an embarassment.
Hey let's all turn on that lovable WLW cheerleader for freedom - Bill Cunning-ham and listen to the voice of the "common" man ("common" being low, lacking dignity and refinement, a commoner in the true sense of the word promting the "common" level view of the world)

Why can't the Owensbys' et al help with the museum? There have been some mighty generous settlements in the last few years...

Um, Just a thought..shouldn't we use $1 million for the schools since they just laid off a bunch of teachers. I mean come on. Where is priority in Cincinnati? That is insane.

Don't they have enough?????????? Come on. What's next a million for illegal immagrants' freedom center? GEEEZ! This city makes me sick!

God, this is getting so old. Virtually no one in this city wants our hard earned dollars to continue to pour down the black hole on the riverfront. Because, you know, they would NEVER again ask for public funds...
Yet year after year, budget after budget, they beg and the beauracrats capitulate.
NOTHING will ever change, kids, until this entire government, at all levels, is dissolved and replaced with sanity.

The Freedom Center promised not to seek taxpayers funds when they lobbied to have this project built. They should be held to their promise. Besides, the city doesn't have $1 million to give them anyways.

We should thank Tom Brinkman and the other legislators who voted to keep state funds from being wasted on this center. We do not pay taxes for luxuries like this. The Freedom Center should be allowed the chance to keep their promise not to seek additional taxpayer funds.

The Museum Center actually has people attending. The Zoo actually has people attending. Both institutions are supported by most folks in this region.
On the other hand, the Slave Museum has little attendance. No one in this region really gives a damn about it. It was built simply as capitulation to blackmail after the riots.

Next question?

Why do people always say this?

These development funds CANNOT be spent to fund schools.

Agree ! If education is not the best development, than we have a warped society, PERIOD !

We could start by cutting mama "bushwell's" salary in half !

That would be a "great", wRong wingnut whacko, lesson !

We'll bet, she couldn't find another job paying her as much !

She makes more than our municipal judges ?

PATHETIC !

Hey Kevin-

People always say stuff like this because this city has it's priorities in all the wrong places. Have you seen some of Cincinnati's public schools?

at 3:56 PM, May 09, 2007 Blogger Kevin LeMaster said...

^ My point was that it's not possible to spend this money on the schools. The condition of the schools is irrelevant.
