The Battle of the Steves is on!

Updated

It's official - State Rep. Steve Driehaus is taking on Rep. Steve Chabot in the 1st Congressional District.

Driehaus, the Price Hill Democrat, filed papers with the Federal Elections Commission Thursday, which allows him to go out and start raising money for the 2008 congressional election.

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee is reportedly high on Driehaus, mainly because he is what most of Chabot's previous Democrats opponents are not - a conservative-to- moderate Democrat who has a history of winning Republican votes on the west side. And, Driehaus is a dyed-in-the-wool, bona fide, bleeds-Elder-purple West Sider, and a member of a family that is larger than the Canadian army. His second- and third-cousins alone could give him an extra 3 or 4 percentage points at the polls.

Last year, Democrat John Cranley tried like the dickens to up-end Chabot, but fell short. He, too, is a native West Sider, but the people of Western Hills never seemed to believe it. He went to St. Xavier High School! What kind of West Sider chooses St. X over Elder?

Chabot's campaign also dropped not-so-subtle hints about Cranley's marital status, which, at the time, was single, by prominently dropping film of his daughter's wedding and family front-porch portraits into campaign commercials.

Did we mention that Steve Driehaus and his wife have two young daughters and a son?

This is going to be a beaut.

You forgot..Westsiders are Reagan Democrats - no liberals allowed. Good luck Mr. Driehaus - you are going to need it.

Before you all go nuts about Driehaus, look at his district. It is NOT Republican any longer. Kerry won it easy, and so did Cranley. He has a great deal of hill to climb, but I hope he does it.

I guess polticians from both parties can be self-serving job hoppers.

I'm tired of recycled politicians looking for a new paycheck from me, the taxpayer - from either side of the aisle.

Will Dreihaus resign now that we know his current job isn't one he really wants? Don't most employers let their employees go when they realize they want another job?

My guess is that Driehaus will have some sort of high-minded rhetoric talking about seeking a new office and term limits forcing him to seek another job on the taxpayers' backs. Oh, that's right, he already did in the first blog entry about this weeks ago.

Chabot needs to hurry up and buy a new car so he can claim it as a business expense before he gets the boot.

Driehaus doesn't stand a chance. Just wait til his liberal record in Columbus is exposed. Driehaus is just another Howard Dean hand-picked liberal.

Nancy Pelosi + Steve Driehaus= higher taxes

Just wait until voters hear about the GIRLS GONE WILD story Driehaus has with former state rep Geoff Smith.

Nobody outside of Price Hill knows who Steve Driehaus is. He's going to need a wider base than Elder High School if he ever hopes to win. Wait til people find out that he's the handpicked lackey of Pelosi and Dean.

Greg Harris was married with a son. Your own paper reported this in 2002 because Chabot sent Harris a stuffed elephant when his son was born in August.

Um, Greg Harris had a son born right in the middle of the 2002 campaign. Since the kid is still alive, I assume Greg was a father during the 2004 campaign as well.

And, Howard, Cranley DID get married during the campaign. In fact, he is married to a woman in her 40s who is a member of the family that founded/owns Gold Star Chili.

Other than that, spot-on reporting. At least this one wasn't plagarized. :)

First district voters need to remember that Steve Chabot has been so busy being virtuous that there has been no time to be effective.

Ethical voters need to remember that Steve Chabot ran a racist campaign pandering to fear and loathing of Section 8 housing.

Driehaus is also the Dem choice of the 20th Century!

Expect a late winner at the Comet !

There is not a politician in the county who doesn't show democrat ideas at some point in the campaign !

Those in the know, KNOW !

It is also well understood. There are liberals, who in fact, respect all views !

So, typical for Chabot to take his jabs !

We all must realize, he works for a wRong wingnut whacko group at the dome !

He would never get published if he didn't slam in one form or another !

PATHETIC !

HAD ENOUGH, VOTE DEMOCRAT 2007 !

Our friend dressed in bold respects all views?

I'm not quite sure I believe that one. Do you?

If there is a wRong wingnut whacko view, your friend will acknowledge it as such !

That's what friends are for !

PATHETIC !

HAD ENOUGH, VOTE DEMOCRAT 2007 !

How can the Enquirer proclaim, "It's Driehaus vs Chabot" so soon?

Ohio will have a primary, right?

So who's to say that someone else (maybe even John Cranley) will wind up in a primary contest vs Driehaus.

Or maybe there'll even be a dark-horse type Republican who will decide to challenge Chabot?

As the saying goes....'there's many a slip 'twixt cup and lip"

(etc)

PS

I have a "google alert" set for John Cranley articles.

I never got one that mentioned that he "married a woman in her forties" during the campaign. Just knew he was engaged.

Then I read some stuff recently about Leslie Ghiz's love life....the soon to be Ghiz-Aziz.

So what's the 411 on the new Mrs Cranley? And what does his mother think of her? It's always good to know what the Mother-in-law is up to.....they're the ones that can make or break marriages....(sometimes)

As usual, you can't depend on the Enquirer for any juicy/tender/delicious tibits of info

Re: section 8 housing, John Cranley was the first candidate to go on the attack over section 8 (article below) which seems strange since he's the one that supports more section 8 in the burbs. Of course, that's the same position Steve Driehaus takes.

Several candidates made a push for their election in a couple weeks in Price Hill candidates forum Tuesday night.

Most of the candidates at the forum live on the West side.

The candidates for Congress, Steve Chabot and John Cranley, had five minutes each to explain to Price Hill voters why they deserve to be elected, as well as taking shots at the other over the city's crime.

"When my opponent went to Congress in 1994, there were roughly 300 Section-8 vouchers in Price Hill," said Cranley. "Now, there are 1200."

"It's a community I care a lot about and I don't like some of the things I see happening," responded Chabot, "and some directly relate to the failures of my opponent on his time on Cincinnati city council."

Chabot says Cranley was heading the Law and Public Safety meeting that got out of control the day before the April 2001 riots.
