So, what do you really think, John?

John Eby, the Westwood Republican who is making his second run for a Cincinnati City Council seat this year, blew a gasket Monday when he learned that five members of council - a majority - were backing the resolution by Democrat David Crowley putting council on record as being opposed to the surge of 21,500 U.S. troops in Iraq.

Laketa Cole, John Cranley, Cecil Thomas and Jim Tarbell voted with Crowley, while Jeff Berding, Chris Bortz and Leslie Ghiz opposed the resolution.

Eby fired off the following e-mail to the anti-surge council members:

"I'm glad to see that the problems of the city have been solved and we can move on to Iraq. What a relief knowing you five are on the job and solving the problems of the city. Did you lie awake last night and think to yourself, 'Thank God we have the banks built, the problem of violent crime solved, and the new housing developments we’ve built are absolutely spectacular.' We can all rest easy now. We no longer have to worry about the 500 murders that occurred on your watch. We can marvel at the completed riverfront and the economic opportunity it brought to the city. Our drop-out rates have never been lower and our graduation rates have never been higher. Our neighborhood business districts are thriving and the streets have no snow. It’s a bright sunny day in the world of Osama Bin Crowley.

Let me ask you, how hard was it to cast this useless vote and get your name in the paper? In case you are unaware, this is not why you were elected to City Council. This is why our city fails. Stop patting yourself on the back and hiding behind clever language, it took NO courage to make this vote. I am deeply disappointed in you John, Laketa and Jim * you should know better. Now get back to the work you were elected to perform."

There was, as you might imagine, no smiley face or "Have A Nice Day" message at the end of Eby's e-mail.

Has he been taking lessons in civility from Chris Finney?

Whoa, this John Eby fella' sounds like he is " mad as hell and not gonna take it ANYmore!"

His subtle eloquence is reminisant of Travis Bickle. ( 'you talkin' to me'? ) Yeah, I watch too many movies.

Does he post on this blog? His indignation looks very familiar.

Cecil Thomas is a do-nothing Council Member with regard to solving the serious problems now being faced by our City.

Isn't it nice when the predictable wRong wingnut whackos engage in a "mad brad" grand-stand to sling the "bushwhacking" elephant dung propaganda !

Hey, off the deep EBaY, we didn't like your rhetoric before and certainly not buying it now !

The voters have spoken and you have graciously reinforced our decisions !

Eeeee Beeee - "Just say NO" !

PATHETIC !

HAD ENOUGH, VOTE DEMOCRAT 2007 !

Good for Eby!

Maybe this time around, the voters of Cincinnati will elect people with the CITY in mind, and not just continue to vote these same people into office due to name recognition.

What have these people done in the past ~15 months to better our city?

Our city IS NOT moving in the direction that majority of its residents want it to, yet our elected council feels the need to further their own agendas rather than work on the ones that they're put into office to take care of.

Tired of the direction this city is taking under the Democrats for the last 20 years - Vote Anybody but Democrat

while the tone may have been harsh, the message is correct - why is this issue on the agenda for a city council meeting?
we were told that this council was moving beyond the childish and boorish behavior of past councils but Mr. Crowley just needed some press time. He and many of his cohorts have been unable to enact anything meaningful to get their name on the front page so they come up with this sophomoric prank to get some press in an election year.

I have to say to all those who wish to post negative comments about John Eby, you have no idea what you are talking about. It has been my experience that people who stand at the top a building and shout at the rain by screaming VOTE DEMOCRAT have their head in one of the neather-regions of their body. If you look at the record, since 1997 the DEMOCRATIC controlled council has not accomplished 4 main goals that every major city is able to cope with. Those being: safe streets, thriving business districts, fiscal responsibility, and education for their students. Instead of making a decision and actually growing a spine on Cincinnati's SERIOUS GANG PROBLEM, the council decided to tackle a vote that DOESN'T MATTER ANYWAY?! As a voter in this city all I can say is it is time for a change. In my opinion John Eby is making sense and we need a voice like his to keep the obviously "out-of-touch" members of City Council on track and talking and voting about the real problems we have in the city.

You rock Eb's! Thanks for calling these guys on this. While they may have moved on to Iraq, punk gangs have moved into downtown attacking and robbing innocent people every day and night from SCPA, The Arronoff, fountain sqaure to the purple people bridge. What happened to all the tough on crime talk from the last election? We need people on council who can stay on task - in Cincinnati.

We need a city council that is accountable to their constituents. The current election method does not give council members any motivation to do any actual work for the good of the city. They need to be elected by district, and they need to be held accountable by the residents of the district. There is no accountability with this - or any other - council slate.

Mr. Eby can attack the rest of council, but leave John Cranley out of it. You see, Mr. Eby, Mr. Cranley is doing exactly what he was elected to do. Since announcing that he was a candidate for Congress as soon as he was re-elected to Council in 2005, Mr. Cranley has spent his entire term running for Congress. Mr. Eby, you cannot, in all honesty, expect him to stop now.

Additionally, since Mr. Cranley spent the first week of last November promising congressional jobs to city hall flunkees, he owes them the opportunity to address the issues that they could be addressing if only the voters of the First District liked John Cranley as much as John Cranley likes John Cranley.

So, Mr. Eby, cut Mr. Cranley some slack. He is doing to only thing he knows how to do: pander to liberal special interests.

It makes me laugh to see that some people in this blog can only blame a "wingnut whacko" for what's happening. While others post facts and support logical arguments about the direction of this city, some person, who won't even disclose their identity, is hurling slurs. Whoever you are...you ARE what's wrong with the American political system. The reason you sling the overly uncreative slurs that you do is because you know these other people are right about this city and it's leadership. In 2007 when all of you are at the polls think about how our great city has fallen into a crime-ridden slum; then remember that it is the fault of the many democrats that have postured in city council rather than lead in it.

Yeah right, vote Democrat in 2007, and watch the City continue in the wrong direction. Hang around downtown at night or just about anywhere in the City limits and you'll see what the tough-on-crime Democrats have done. Open your eyes and vote for the candidates that will actually work on the serious City issues. Thanks Mr. Eby for not being afraid to speak the truth. The City needs more people like you.

People get out of your political bubble - we live in a "trickle down economy" where money spent by the feds on the war comes directly out of the state, county and city budgets. Every dollar spent there is not available here.

Notto mention the additional costs we incur. The Hamilton County Board of Commissioners just budgeted an extra $50k for the Veterans service Commission to address the influx of soldiers needing help in our area - city included. Withut this war - that is one example of local budgets directly funding this war effort.

secondly, like the VA Commission - all social service programs are experiencing higher costs due to the war . Whether our brave soldiers have sacrificed theiir lives or their limbs - the lcoal community will bear a significant amount of the costs to support the gi's family - whether it is local mental health care, food stamps, job training, etc --- this is a global problem and effects all of us.

Then, we have City Mayor meetings whereas these small groups caucus from all over the country and send their agendas to the president. This practice is copied for every group - heck they have lobbyist who promtoe their agendas and interests to the state and federal legislators ( why do you think they have all these "associations") - so, it is entirely relevant for our city to take a stand on the single biggest financial. political and social issue facing this country.

GET YOUR HEADS OUT OF YOUR BEHINDS AND SEE THE WHOLE PICTURE-- CROWLEY IS RIGHT!!!

I fully and whole heartedly support the sentiment of Mr. Eby's comments. City Council has nothing whatsoever to do with international policies. The Council members would better spend there time on issues that hit home in the city of Cincinnati. Before they spend a minute on a resolution regarding Iraq, perhaps they should get out on the ice covered streets of Cincinnati and shovel snow. Most of them are pretty good at shoveling!

Little Johnny Drinksalot makes a good point. Maybe John Cranley is just trying to make himself feel better about losing the election by pretending to be in Congress. As a follow up, John will introduce resolutions to raise federal income taxes, require all section 8 vouchers to be used in the suburbs and eliminate the death penalty.

_____________

And he's doing this how? By speaking out against an irrelevant waste of Cincinnati taxpayer money? This "resolution" is going to do nothing to solve the problems of Cincinnati, which is what these clowns were elected (and are getting paid) to do.

I'm glad that Mr Eby "fired off" the email, as he said what a LOT of us wanted to say, but I doubt that Mr Wilkinson would've published an email from little ol' me. The man's not even in office (yet) and he's already representing my stance on the issues.

John is abolutely correct, and for proof all you need to do is read the above comments. When the lefties are wrong on an issue they name call and smear. They have no real argument, just being nasty and loud. The city of Cincinnati is in decline. It bothers me to see a once thriving city die. 20 years of single party control has done so much harm to this city.

at 7:24 PM, February 13, 2007 Anonymous Anonymous said...

Let's get to the facts...see 2/13/07 post at 1:22pm by Anonymous. Read it again, people! The increase in troop levels causes a decrease in available federal funds for our city AND increases the need for local support spending for the troops' families.

Crowley's resolution is timed to coincide with the Congress' resolution.

Facts matter!!

"...When the lefties are wrong on an issue they name call and smear......"

Wow, I can't believe we're reading this rhetoric from a wRong wingnut whacko !

Must not be a registered wRong wingnut or three days before any election they would be receiving the printed elephant dung smear propaganda in their mailbox !

There are those in the 'Know' and then those that are "clueless" !

We have thirty two years of wRong wingnut whacko smear propaganda in our archives !

Just how would we classify the wRong wingnut whacko "eeeek beeek" slinging the elephant dung by referring to a city councilman as:

Osama Bin Crowley

PATHETIC !

HAD ENOUGH, VOTE DEMOCRAT 2007 !

at 10:28 PM, February 13, 2007 Anonymous Anonymous said...

Anon at 1:22pm hit the nail on the head --- Facts matter!

Increased troop levels will draw federal dollars away from possible city use AND will increase city spending on support of troops' families now and when they return as vets.

How about a few less name calling posts and other hysterics...and let's stick to the facts.

I agree and support Mr. Eby, but I also agree with and understand the "trickle down economy" comment that was made earlier.

The fact is that the City has to ultimately incur the costs associated with the war whether City council approves or disapproves of the surge. The war is happening and will continue to happen, so the vote to disapprove of the surge does nothing to help our City budget.

Mr. Eby's point is for City council to focus on the problems within our own City first, because that is what they were elected to do and what they are getting paid to do.

unless I missed seeing it, no one has pointed out the fact that Eby is running for council, so his message was a way of getting himself some free PR-

Get off it, Crowley is right. If we would not have had this war then over 344 million dollars in federal spending would have been available to rebuild the city.

Our job now is to deal with the battle in Iraq and the War on Terror. Starting with the Homeland.
