It's official: city council is against the surge

Five members voted in committee for the anti-surge resolution today.

Here is Howard Wilkinson's story

Here is a statement from Leslie Ghiz:

Councilmember Leslie Ghiz expressed her opposition to the passage today of an arbitrary resolution in Finance Committee concerning the federal policy on the Iraq war. Ghiz noted that the resolution is being considered at a time when the City is faced with over $1 million in new costs associated with the new Fraternal Order of Police Contract as well as the recent ruling regarding police medical benefits.

“I cannot begin to understand the rationale behind addressing a federal policy prior to taking care of our own business,” Ghiz said. “We stand today with a $1 million bill in our hands for our police officers’ salaries, yet we are wasting time stating our opinion on the war in Iraq.”

Ghiz told citizens that they should direct their opinions about the war in Iraq to their representatives in Congress as well as President Bush.

Good for Leslie. This is a national policy that has nothing to do with running our city which is the job our council was elected to perform. Until we have crime and the budget under control, council should not be wasting it's time with issues that have nothing to do with the business of managing our city. Not to mention, it is completely arrogant of them to assume that their opinion should speak for all of us. It's these kind of stupid decisions that make me sorry that I live in Cincinnati sometimes.

Mr.Crowley has at last accomplished his little Valentine's Day message to President Bush. Maybe he can now get his mind on much more serious and mature items, such as solving the many problems now being faced by our City.

Wilkinson forgot his byline:

Citizens for Ghiz

Congressman Chabot doesn't care about what we say and think anymore than Bush does.

That's the example Ghiz and the rest of the "fascist five" are following. We want our local governmnet to send a message to the bipartisan warhawks that we can't afford this unconstitutional, illegal and immoral war that is based on lies.

We know Ghiz is baby a NeoCon that loves Rove, Bush and Chenney.

She's going to get thrown out on her butt next November despite the endorsement we're certain she'll recieve from the propagandists at the Enquirer.

The arrogance of these people is unbelievable.

I'll bet a lot of money that if you asked President Bush right now if he had any idea that the Cincinnati City Council passed a resolution opposing the troop surge in Iraq he wouldn't know what you're talking about.

Steve Chabot, Jean Schmidt, John Boehner, Voinovich and Sherrod Brown all have run campaigns very recently, and I think they all expressed how they feel about the war in Iraq. They are all elected and were elected by people who knew their stance on the war in Iraq.

David Crowley never ran a campaign ad with his position on the war, and if he would have I hope he would have lost votes. Why he is spending his time passing resolutions that don't effect the things he promised to do is wrong. Mayor Mallory should have put him in his place in this one, or maybe it shows the Mayor has no control over this Council which he is a member of the majority party.

And to all the SPCA kids, maybe if you moved to the West End you could walk to the bus with the Mayor, I'm sure he feels safe with a hired guard. How many buses would your guards salary buy Mr. Mayor?

The fact that the city of Cincinnati is passing this reolution is huge. Congrats to Council and to Cincy.

Ridiculous.

While we're at it wasting taxpayer time with meaningless resolutions that carry no weight, accomplish nothing, and serve only to further politicize a climate in need of civility, can we ask the city council to take a hard line stance against Dragons, Gnomes and the Klingon Empire?

What a waste of time and poor example of political showmanship. Voters should be embarassed to be pandered to in such a way.

This is great! Leslie Ghiz finally does something worth complimenting. For once I agree with Ghiz, they need to address the numerous issues facing the city instead of passing meaningless resolutions expressing Crowley's personal opinions about the federal government. If Crowley cannot attend to city business, he needs to make way for someone who will. Crowley needs to go.

Thank god we have someone on council that understands their role. Leslie Ghiz is right on target we need our local leaders to lead our city not our Country. David Crowley and John Cranley need to take a hike! They have no interest in Cincinnati...unless it happens to advance their own personal agenda!

There goes Leslie again, getting her friends to post pro-Ghiz comments about her

Way to go Crowley and the better informed elected officials - these people just don't understand "trickle down economics" and the financial strains being caused on every jurisdiction because of this catastrophic mistake -- not to mention the loss of lives,...

The only thing needed for evil to prevail is for good men to stand by and do nothing.

Fascist Five plus some are showing the breadth of their knowledge of how government works

Jesus, I hope she looses. This war has cost every Cincinnatian. Not to mention future Cincinnatians. I applaud those who voted to go against the presidents illegal war.

Ghiz is just another disconnected Repub. Sad.

You all can't get anything done in the city. What makes you think you know how to run the war.

Mr. Crowley should sponsor a Resolution that brings to a halt all of his endeavors that give support to Irish Republican Army Terriorist Groups.

Brava ghiz! Brava! I haven’t seen grandstanding like that since the last time Prof. Harold Hill lectured us on the immorals of a billard hall (Starts with “P”, that rhymes with “G” that stands for “ghiz” -lalalala).

Also, so this is what a $5000 bonus will get you - lots of annon. comments in your favor. Good for you ghiz - that was money well spent (too bad it was the city's).

Crowley is now starting to display publicly what many others have known privately...he's definitely showing the first signs of dementia.

Crowley! Give us a break. Quit wasting Council's time, the media's time and our time on this idiotic motion of yours.

And to some of the other posters on this Blog, lay off Leslie Ghiz. She's doing a damn good job. You're just ticked that a female, Republican has the "stones" to say and do the things that no Democrat on Council would ever dare do!

Oh yea, Ghiz is right - the war in Iraq doesn't concern us hahahah

it makes me proud to live in a city that recognizes that we have an administration that is out of touch and out of control. the districts have been gerrymandered so bad that the democratic voice of the people can't be heard thru our questionably elected officials "i just want to mow my yard and drive my old car" chabot and "mean jean" schmidt.

now that we've set the record straight for the world to see, lets get on with city business.
