Pepper blasted Banks 'truce,' Heimlich

As Hamilton County and Cincinnati officials were announcing their deal to get the Banks development on the move, a campaign worker for David Pepper -- who is trying to take the seat held by Republican incumbent Commissioner Phil Heimlich -- was passing out a release blasting Heimlich and the deal.

A day after he won the Democratic nomination, Pepper was assailing the deal as a "truce" that cost taxpayers millions of dollars while get the process where it was a year ago.

Last June, commissioners announced they had agreed -- without the knowledge of other groups working to make the Banks a reality -- with a developer to give it exclusive rights for six months to see if it could start building. That deal fell through in December.

Since then, despite protests from Cincinnati Council Members, Hamilton County officials have interviewed prospective developers and named four finalists. They were prepared to select a developer until the last week or so when they engaged in talks with city officials and Reds owners. The result was Wednesday's announcement that a five-member group will make most of the new decisions on the Banks and its developer.

"After a year's worth of incompetence and mismanagement and millions of dollars wasted, we are right back to where we were last June," Pepper's release noted.

"This 'deal' is an admission that the County's entire approach of the past year was a mistake, and the millions of taxpayer dollars spent on the misadventure have been wasted."

Pepper's release didn't mention the other two commissioners, Republican Pat DeWine or Democrat Todd Portune, even though they were on the commission last June when the county took control of the Banks deal.

Portune has been shut out by the Resluglicans. Pay attention. Phil deserves the blame, he's earned it.

About time those calls between city hall and commission offices were called for stall tactics and wasted tax money. David sees the overall program for what it is, high stakes political hi-jinks and grandstanding egos. Deflects from issues like jobs, police response (which has gotten better) and other misspent funds. Go, Pepper, Go!! Tell us more!!!

Pepper's not criticizing the "deal" itself. He's criticizing the entire year that Heimlich wasted by grabbing control of the project--only to now announce a historic "deal" to go back to what was essentially being done one year ago.

Phil's wild goose chase of the past year has cost millions. The victory here is that His Incompetence is now admitting he can't handle the project. Give him credit--to announce progress by essentially admitting you blew it takes some chutzpah.

Phil: "The enemy is delay."

Well, then the enemy has won, thanks to Phil's leadership.

Good to see David Pepper is using the same tactics he used in last years mayoral race. Looks like David didn't learn anything.

Good God Kimball,

One biased report after another. Todd Portune has been repeatedly shut out of the decision making process on the Banks, Drake and damn near every other descition in County 'government'. Heimlich appeareently thinks he is the king of Hamilton County and can rule by decree. Portune was so frustrated by Heimlichs stunts, and the Enquirers refusale to cover them, interview himself or even publish the letter he sent to the Enquirer that he published the letter in the cincinnati Beacon for all to read:

Your coverage is shameful. That last little jibe in your final sentence says it all. Keep spiking those stories that make Heimlich look bad. Carl Linder will be happy with you & Mr. Callinan, and he can keep pulling Heinlich's strings from behind the scenes.

Laurie Quinlivan smoked your collective asses with her report on the crooked Drake deal Tuesday night. Where have all of the Enquirer's stories on the subject been?

No one cares what dean thinks. That's why he's on here promoting a blog that no one reads. He can't drive web traffic to his site without the help of the Enquirer. Pathetic.

I second RGVIV's comments about Portune.

Also, why should Pepper bother to mention Pat DeWine? Throughout Heimlich's year-long Banks tantrum, DeWine has been imitating a plate of meat loaf. He just sits there, passive and silent, acceding to Heimlich's agenda, which has accomplished zilch. You usually quote Heimlich, not DeWine. Moreover, Heimlich is commission president and leads the majority.

Why should Pepper regard DeWine as Heimlich's equal partner? DeWine has been strapped into the baby seat over the past year while Heimlich drove the project into a ditch.

I haven't exactly seen you writing about a lot about DeWine. Maybe because there's nothing to write?

Thank you, anonymous, for linking to my Banks piece.

I wish we could get some real explanation for how this stuff works from the professionals in town. Then, I wouldn't have to do this stuff myself.

All this talk about The Banks, and who is taking the time to explain the economic details in user-friendly terms?

What's really at stake here? What's the motivation? Sounds like a story. It shouldn't take unpaid bloggers to get this stuff around.

Well said, Dean.

Kimball & Cliff Peale - We non-economists really would like to understand this. How about a "Banks for Dummies" story with a glossary? You have interested readers who want more information.

Would appreciate you forwarding this to Tom Callinan and Julie Engebrecht.

A detailed May 4, 2006 letter from Commissioner Portune to Bob Castellini about the Banks Working Group may be found here.

How sad is it when one of our three county commissioners has to go to an independent media sight to have thier voice heard? The Enquirer has completely shut commissioner Portune out of it's coverage, and covers for Phil Heimlich's incompitance. What bias.

As another poster noted, channel 9 really put the Enquirer to shame this week with it's coverage of the 'Drakegate'. Did you see how uncomfortable Heimlich looked during that interview? He was squirming in his seat, rapidly blinking and reaching for words. If you saw someone behaving in this manner while testifying in a court trial against them you would automatically find them 'guilty as charged'.

Come on Kimball and Tom Callinan, your cover has been blown. Start reporting fairly on county government or get out of the business.

Heimlich needs to be concerned now that the Whistleblower announced that he will helping him. This is great news for Pepper because the Whistleblower is the kiss of death. Just ask McEwen.
