A look at Schmidt's numbers

Today, rookie Rep. Jean Schmidt went to work in Washington secure in the knowledge that after just eight months on the job, voters in Ohio aren' t ready to toss her out.

"I'm so grateful that voters once again placed their trust in me," she said by phone from her Washington office last night.

Is that what voters did?

Schmidt, a Miami Township Republican, won nearly 48 percent of the vote in Tuesday's GOP primary election for the 2nd Congressional District, to beat challenger Bob McEwen, a former congressman from southern Ohio who got 42 percent.

But Republicans Deborah Kraus and James Constable got 6 percent and 4 percent, respectively.
That means that more people voted AGAINST Schmidt (36,449 people, or 52 percent) than voted FOR her (33,314, or 48 percent).

That also means that if McEwen - who lost to Schmidt by 3,703 votes - had gotten about half of the 6,838 votes that went to Kraus and Constable, he would have won.

Even more interesting, Steve Chabot (OH-1), who’s republican nomination isn’t even contested, received more votes than all the district 2 candidates combined!

Schmidt: 12,335
McEwen: 11,493
Kraus: 1,634
Constable: 840
TOTAL: 26,302

S. Chabot: 28,136

Also, FYI, John Cranley, Chabot’s upcoming democratic opponent received 16,435 votes, I think that’s 71% more for Chabot, right?

Malia Rulon says: "Math is FUN!"

If ifs & buts were candies and nuts, we'd all have a Merry Christmas.

The only numbers that truly matter are the numbers that re-elected Jean Schmidt. Reminds me of Kerry's whining about the results in Ohio in 2004.

Give ém hell Jean. You got your backing, don't be afraid to speak your mind!!!
Please LOWER OUR TAXES in every way you can!
Take the money away from the greedy DC insiders before they try to spend it.
Can't spend what they don't have.
TAX CUTS
TAX CUTS
TAX CUTS
prove the naysayers wrong, show them on all fronts that you want us to keep our money, not send it all to DC
Support Bush tax cuts. make them deeper. Make them permanent!

Congratulations!!!

On to November!!

Bob could have stayed in Virginia also!

Hi Malia

I do see your point. In some states, they would have a run-off election but not in Ohio.

Chris Cilizza of the Washington Post claims the Republicans will have "little trouble" retaining this seat in November. Well, we'll see about that.

It certainly sounds like you're no fan of Jean's. So that must say something.

True, true. She didn't receive the backing of the GOP voters. 52% voted against her period! She is weak and will be fodder for the Dems who will take back the state. Good job Jean.

58% of second district Republicans voted against Bob McEwen. 94% voted against Kraus. And an incredible 96% voted against Constable. But, what does all this mean?

Nothing!! Jean Schmidt won...again.

Even more super duper interesting is how Steve Chabot (OH-1) endorsed both Jean Schmidt and Bob McEwen in district 2.

In Washington he told Jean that he would support her, then in Cincinnati, he told McEwen's people that he'd endorse him.

Kind of funny, since Schmidt actually lives in Cincinnati and McEwen lives in Washington.

Still, at this point in Chabot's overly-long, haven't really gotten anything done career, it's easy to get confused about where you are and who you support or even what you support. Flying to Washington and Japan and Taiwan and India and Egypt and Uzbekistan can easily make you forget who you are for or why the voters put you there in the first place.

So FYI, enjoy watching Chabot say one thing in Cincinnati, even when he's "endorsing" two people at once, rather than staying out of the race altogether. Oh Chabot, what happened?

Steve Chabot is still 1000% better than the alternative, Cranley. My favorite Chabot moment was when he acted as one of the House managers who prosecuted Slimeball-in-Chief Bill Clinton during the Senate impeachment trial.

Hey Dems, Slick willy NEVER received even 50 percent of the vote and we were stuck with that lying scoundrel for 8 LONG YEARS!!
Jean WILL receive more than 50 and probably more than 60 percent of the vote in November even though I assume the national democratic party will move money from New York, Massachusetts and other states they have locked up to try to influence our LOCAL ELECTION!!!

Give 'em hell Jean we're 100 percent behind you!!

The whole second district!!!

We have to remember now, the votes speak for themselves. 52 percent of the voters indeed said Schmidt is not the correct person to represent the district. What we have to do now is refocus, make sure Jean UNDERSTANDS what those numbers say, and then move on to November. It's over folks, and it's time to move on. Republicans need to refocus...the party is split and is in dis-array. Democrats need to rally around Wulsin, and make sure they present a good hard list of issues and how they plan on resolving those issues. AND PLEASE LETS FOCUS ON ISSUES....perhaps since we have two residents of the district we can get past the negative campaigning and get back to a really good disucssion on the positions of the candidates on the issues at hand.

Steve Chabot puts partisan politics before anything else. What is the best Chabot moment of partisan hypocrisy?

So Chabot went after Clinton for ethics, yes.

Yet, hypocritically Chabot did everything he could to protect Gingrich when he was busted for breaking ethics rules.

Chabot and the rest of the gang have been voting down ethics rules and rewarding themselves with easier access to cash and free trips.

Chabot has been a loyal defender of Bush.

And Chabot has done everything in his power to protect Tom DeLay when he lies.

Where was Chabot on his buddies Jack Abramoff, Tony Rudy, or Mike Scanlon? I guess Chabot is fine with lying as long as it involves ripping off Indians and he gets a cut.

And all the time Chabot is busy playing partisan politics he gets nothing done for the Westside, for the North and for the City.

It will take very little for Cranley to accomplish more in a year, then Chabot has done in his broken term limit pledge 12 years.

what is it about Chabot endorsing both Jean and Bob? Chabot wants to have his cake and eat it too a lot in recent years. kind of like Chabot giving billions of taxdollars to rich oil companies then saying he's against corporate welfare.

Hey liberal posters-

Steve Chabot defeated Cranley in 2000. He'll beat Cranley again in 2006. The Republicans own the 1st and 2nd congressional districts. Better get used to it.

More people also voted for Andy Kennedy to stay as UC's coach. Therefore, Andy Kennedy should replace all as the 2nd Congressional Rep.

Come on you nerds. You lost. Jean won. Move the heck on.
