Three strikes, but is she out?

U.S. Rep. Jean Schmidt lost three Ohio Elections Commission complaints today -- two filed against her -- and one filed against her Republican primary opponent Bob McEwen.

They face each other in the 2nd Congressional District election on Tuesday. (See earlier blog item about Schmidt campaign manager Allen Freeman's complaint, which was dismissed.)

The bipartisan commission voted 7-0 to issue Schmidt and her congressional campaign committee a public reprimand for making false statements about having a second undergraduate degree. After hearing testimony from complainant James P. Urling of Norwood and a former teacher, Julie Faust of Milford, the commission found that Schmidt, R-Miami Township, failed to correct misinformation about a secondary education degree from the University of Cincinnati.

Schmidt's Columbus attorney, William Todd, said, "Yes, there was a mistake and the mistake was corrected.''

But the commission found that false reports that Schmidt had two degrees -- which appeared in government publications, voter guides, on her campaign Web site and in various newspaper articles -- were significant enough to affect the outcome of an election.

To underscore Schmidt's delay in correcting the errors, Urling's Hyde Park attorney, Christopher P. Finney, read portions of Schmidt's 68-page deposition in which she says "I don't know,'' "I'm not sure,'' "I can't answer that,'' or "I don't remember" at least 50 times.

The commission did not order any fines, or recommend prosecution, against Schmidt or her campaign.

In a separate complaint from Urling, the commission found that Schmidt made false statements by including endorsements she never received from Tom Tancredo, a Colorado congressman, and the Family Research Council on her Web site. But it also found no violation against Schmidt in that same complaint for publicizing that she had the endorsement of U.S. Rep Steve Chabot of Cincinnati. The elections commission agreed with testimony that Chabot endorsed both Schmidt and McEwen and would not ask her to remove his endorsement from her Web site.

Elections Commission member William L. Mallory Sr., a former state senator from Cincinnati, said the ultimate responsibility for anything that goes on in the campaign rests with the candidate.

Liar, liar, pants on fire.

Complaints against McEwen dropped and Schmidt found GUILTY on all counts sans one - the Chabot endorsement because he apparently endorsed Bob and Cut-n-Run.

I truly hope the Enquirer makes special note of these developments in the Sunday paper. There's no way to twist this in Schmidt's favor. McEwen is exonerated and Schmidt is reprimanded. How about rescinding your endorsement for Schmidt, and giving it to the honest candidate?

Wow, sounds like Bill or Hillary Clinton's testimony:

"I don't know,'' "I'm not sure,'' "I can't answer that,'' or "I don't remember" at least 50 times.

I'm telling you folks, deep down underneath that wrinkled exterior and mean interior, there lies a liberal. Schmidt is no conservative.

Schmidt voted with BOB TAFT in favor of the largest tax increase in Ohio history.

Schmidt lied about Danny Bubp and Murtha.

Schmidt lied about endorsements from Tancredo and from the FRC.

She lied to the FOP about her stance on the death penalty!

She lied about her education background.

She lied about being a teacher for four years.

She hired liberal fundraiser Stan Chesley to attack her opponent.

Her campaign filed a bogus complaint with the Ohio Elections Commission, which was thrown out today.

Her liberal fundraiser/Clinton supporter Stan Chesley filed a frivolous FEDERAL lawsuit against her opponent, also THROWN OUT yesterday.

Everything this woman says or does turns to crap.

I don't care if McEwen really lives on Saturn. ANYONE is better than Jean Schmidt.

Rino

Thanks for the breaking update, I had been living under a rock and hadn't heard that!

The Ohio Elections Commission has just exposed what a fraud Jean Schmidt is. Just as she is a pathologic tax hiker, she is just as much of a pathological liar.

She'll lie about her endorsements. She'll lie about her resume. She'll lie about Bob McEwen's residency rather than try to face the voters on the issues. She is a truly pathetic excuse for a Congressman and a person as well.

Hey "Rino Hunter", for a little fun b/c we all love technicalities, Bob Taft doesn't vote.

All bashing aside, we now know for a fact that Schmidt is a liar. Both sides know this. Whether you are for McEwen or Schmidt, you have to look at the big picture. The big picture is this person will be representing us. Do we want a person representing us in congress that has a residence a part-time residence in Virginia, or do we want another liar? Additionally, Schmidt doesn't play well with others in Congress. We need someone who has the personality to work with others to accomplish what we want. That is simply Bob McEwen.

At first I thought Jean would come through looking good. I found as everyone else did today that she has misled us. I think we need to pull together and back McEwen. I belive he will get us farther in the long run. I don't like our party being divided this far.

Hey Collin::

Time to help serve Bob with another bogus lawsuit!!!

I love to hear you defend your girl being voted 7-0 that she was gulity of lying about her resume and her endorsements. Only thing you throw at Bob is about his residency and he wins everytime. Complaint throw out by elections commission and your Democratic Lawyers bogus suit withdrawn because it is a bunch of crap.

We all see through this. Jean won't show up to debate and she won't show up in Columbus even though she was ordered to. Also a bunch of crap.

Maybe you can send some faxes o something.

When is Finney going to start answering questions himself about Three Centurions LLC, Finney's real estate partnership with Phil Heimlich - which they transferred to their wives when the Dean started asking questions?

Jon Craig, when is the Enquirer going to start asking Finney & Heimlich those questions? It looks like the paper's avoiding the story as a favor to Commissioner Heimlich.

Stop all the negative comments, you freaking jerks!

I'm sick of all the nasty name calling and people talking about the bad points of the candidates in this race.

This race should be about issues, not about whether someone got caught lying about their education!

Sheesh, you freaking cowards. I'm cutting out of here.

This blog is about Jean Schmidt who was just found guilty of LYING. Stop trying to change the subject and face the facts!!

Didn't know about that one, Dean. I'm only a one-person bureau, and I had my hands full all day today.

Schmidt Lied.

McEwen Stole, Lied, Bounced Checks, Whatever.

We should all just vote for Parker. At Least the Guy Seems Like an Honest Man.

Let's see here. Where to begin?

Whew. Too much crapola to sift through.

Bottom line: the lady (Schmidt) was in way over her little pony-tailed head the day she rubbed that lottery scratch-off ticket and found out that she had actually won a seat in Congress.

She has stepped in "it" time after time after time.

She has managed to ruin the reputation of our 2nd District and has ripped a deep scar within our party - pitting one Republican against another.

Then, she cozies up to Stan "The Clintons' Man" Chesley?

Next, she actually tries to get Bob McEwen disenfranchised? Who's orchestrating all of this for her? Al Gore or John Kerry? Maybe both.

Is Schmidt working through the Democrats or are the Democrats working through Schmidt? Either way, she is an absolute embarrassment and will go down as one of the least-effective Representatives ever to serve.

Finally, today, the box score reads: McEwen 3...Schmidt 0.

PLEASE! Mrs. Schmidt. Continue to act paranoid. Make campaign blunder after campaign blunder. You are making it quite clear for even the most ardent of your supporters that you are officially a member of the NRFPT (Not Ready For Prime Time) Team. It's been said before: May 2nd cannot come fast enough.

One question: If all of this stuff about Bob McEwen is SOOOOOO BAD and bothers Schmidt SOOOOOO much, then why in the world didn't she bring up any of this crap in last year's Primary?!

What is that I hear? tic toc tic toc. Crickets chirping?

No answer from the Schmidt camp? I didn't think so.

That pretty much says it all.

Parker does seem like the one candidate in the 2nd district who makes sense. To find his website type "Jim Parker for Congress".

The guy makes sense. I think we have a Democrat who can win against Schmidt in November.

Jon Craig, Thanks for your reply about the Heimlich-Finney Three Centurions business partnership.

Hope to see you or another Enquirer reporter covering this. Your readers deserve to know about this illicit business relationship and the conflict of interest it represents.

Mallory's a former State Representative, not State Senator.

I say Schmidt 48% McEwen 52% with McEwen taking a surprise amount of votes in Clermont.

Hey, don't discount Deborah Kraus. Some numbers have her pulling 25-30% of the vote. Check her out at deborahkrausforcongress.org

When is the Enquirer going to investigate the next Mean Jean lie? Now that her college transcripts were entered into evidence on Columbus, can't any of the reporters there check to see if she really did the coursework as she claimed? I hear she was more than 40 hours short of getting her second degree in education which means she would be telling another lie. She said she just didn't apply for the degree. Well if that is the claim, let's get out of the office and investigate to see if that is indeed the case.

Or are you going to cover up this story because your editorial board made the mistake of endorsing the worst congressperson ever in the history of Greater Cincinnati?

at 10:30 AM, April 28, 2006 Anonymous Anonymous said...

I know what you mean, I can't figure out why the Enquirer, the largest paper in the region, never investigates Schmidt's bogus claims. With this pattern of lies, and lies to cover up lies, you would think they would into her UC records to see if she really did the coursework as she claims. So if she is really 40 some credit hours behind, then she could not have done the work as Schmidt, Bennett and Freeman claimed, which means another one of those lies to cover up a lie.

Howard, why won't you look into this? Are the editors trying to keep this story under wraps? Maybe they should just pull their endorsement in this Sunday's edition so it won't look as bad when McEwen wins.

Come on Howard, investigate her claims. I'll bet it's another lie.

at 11:01 AM, April 28, 2006 Anonymous Anonymous said...

unfortunately I doubt the Enquirer would pull their endorsement. That would look like they did not know what they were doing. Partly line dictates endorsing the incumbent. However, if that is the case, why didn't the other 6 counties in the 2nd district endorse her like Tim Rudd did in Clermont County? Inquiring minds really want to know......

at 12:35 PM, April 28, 2006 Anonymous Anonymous said...

They didn't endorse her because she didn't ask or need them too.

Anyone else here about the new Survey USA poll that puts her up 21 pts.

Thats a lot of ground to make up in 4 days.

Too bad anonymous blog postings weren't votes, maybe the McEwen would have a chance.

I sincerely hope that Bob McEwen's superb qualifications do not get over-looked, in the rush to get rid of Mrs. Schmidt. Yes, she is not qualified. Yes, she is not a Conservative. Yes, she claims to be motivated by Faith, but obviously has never heard of the Ten Commandments.

But Bob McEwen was one of the very finest young Congressmen, when he served in the happier days of Ronald Reagan's Presidency. Bob is a man of principle, who articulates very well what you and I believe in. He is also a man who knows how Washington operates, and will be far more effective than the average Congressman, whichever party controls Congress.

The suggestions that he somehow ceased to be an Ohioan by reason of working out of the State, are contemptible in the extreme. They are a smear, playing on the ignorance of many voters, as to how citizenship is determined. People posting under aliases, or as anonymous spread the smears; but they are smears. Had the same notions had any credibility, Herbert Hoover could never have run for President, since he spent most of his pre-Presidency adult life out of the United States.

Ignorance compounded by deception has epitomized the Schmidt campaign. But again, do not overlook the fact that Bob McEwen is the real goods! Bob will be a Congressman we can all be proud of!

That Survey USA poll is not even close to being accurate. This is going to be close and it could go either way.

If Schmidt were really up by 20+ points, from the way Bennett runs a campaign, he would not be having Schmidt do anything. You don't even acknowledge your opponent exists. You just let her coast.

However, if you are in trouble, you take desperate measures. You hire Liberal Democrat Lawyer Stan Chesley, you file worthless complaints on residency, you lie and deceive, you avoid debates for fear of saying something stupid to further a loss of votes (remember Jean and her seven cyclinder cars?).

The actions of Schmidt and her campaign clearly show she is close or even behind McEwen. If you want to drink the Schmidt poll with a 20 point lead Kool-aide, fine, but's it's going to kill you in the end at the polls.

Schmidt will lose this on ignorance, arrogance and lack of character.

Schmidt did not ask for the endorsements of the other counties in the 2nd District. She only asked for Clermont County. First I am sure if the other counties were to endorse her she would be more than happy to take them. Truth is she would have loved their endorsements but was not going to get them. Does she really think that all things start and end in Clermont?? Sad that much of the district is outside of Clermont. She is suppose to represent the entire district not just Clermont. Truth is she has no support outside of Clermont. If she did as you say not ask for endorements from all of the other counties that is sad. Sad that she feels that little about the other counties that she ignors them.
Bob will represent the 2nd district fairly. Also it will not matter to him where you live in the 2nd district. Even if you live in Clermont and supported Schmidt you will find that his staff, office, and he himself will do everything to represent you and help all parts of this district. History with Schmidt is if you don't support her she will get back at you. Just ask some of the officals in Clermont county who have been treated badly just because they did not support her.

By the way keep mis-representing that you are up by 20 points. Actions by Schmidt and common sense on this topic show that it is either very close or Bob is now ahead.

Phil Heimlich is linking this post to his website. ANOTHER story from 2006!?! Phil, everyone realizes you're desperate, but at least try to lose with dignity.

Just between me and you, Phil, I don't think a silly endorsement flub even comes CLOSE to accepting illegal cash when you were a Commissioner, or your involvement with the ultra-liberal COAST boys, or your friends shouting down people on your behalf with expletive laced tirades, or the fact that under your watch, Hamilton County was run into the ground as a direct results of decisions YOU made.

Do you honestly think you can fool voters into thinking you're taking the moral high ground? Doubtful.

Phil, the voters elected a DEMOCRAT over you for one reason, and one reason only: your PHAILED leadership.

You can attempt to rationalize your embarrassing, shameful defeat as many times as you want, but everyone knows the true reasons why you weren't elected. You're a miserable failure, and you should stop treating the voters in other counties like they’re stupid.

Phil, the fact that you have built your entire campaign around bringing up issues from 2005 and 2006 says all we need to know. You're a power hungry politician who craves the spotlight, has no other ideas, and happens to be out of a job. You are an embarrassment to the Republican Party, and if I thought you had any morality left, I'd say you should be ashamed of yourself.

You’ve overstayed your welcome, Phil. Now please, for the sake of the Republican Party, GO HOME!
