From Terrace Park to the ball park

AP snapped this photo at last night's Reds vs. Nationals Game:

Their caption:

Former Ohio Congressman Rob Portman attends the Washington Nationals' Major League Baseball game against the Cincinnati Reds, Tuesday, April 25, 2006, in Washington. President Bush recently appointed Portman as the new White House budget director after Joshua Bolten stepped down to become White House chief of staff. (AP Photo/Haraz N. Ghanbari)

Update from political reporter/lifetime Reds fan Howard Wilkinson:

Portman’s presence at RFK Stadium for the Reds’ 6-5 win over the Nationals was noted on the air by Reds broadcaster Marty Brennaman, who said Portman was sitting with Tom Williams, one of the partners in the Reds’ ownership group. Brennaman obviously was happy to see them, calling them both "class acts.’’ Portman and Williams stopped by the radio booth later in the game to say hello to Brennaman and his radio partner, Steve Stewart.

Update from Washington correspondent and Nats fan Malia Rulon:

Portman also was sitting with White House Deputy Chief of Staff Joe Hagin, an Indian Hill native who worked with Portman in the first Bush administration.

You mean Rob Portman, Ohio resident, is doing work in the DC area right now? Is Mean Jean going to have her liberal activist attorney Stan Chesley file an injuction against him to prevent Mr. Portman from voting on Tuesday?

you're an idiot.

Jeff, you know that your implications are absurd. Rob Portman is in government service, which would mean the residency rules don't apply to him.

Of course, Jeff, your good buddy Bob McEwen was in government service when he was living in Fairfax Station, Virginia. However, working for the quasi-Marxist government of Eritrea or the Islamo-Communist government of Uzbekistan is not the kind of government service covered under the residency rules.

Rob also worked for several years as an attorney in a DC law firm before going to the Bush White House and then coming home to run for Congress. Did anyone complain that he was too "DC oriented" and "doesn't have the district's best interests at heart?" NO!

And I would kindly remind you all that while Jean Schmidt was booing Elizabeth Dole and dropping out of UC, Bob McEwen represented Ohio for 12 years in Congress. In fact, he represented 6 of the 7 counties (although only a sliver of Clermont) that encompass the 2nd now and won those areas last summer...why? Because his old constituents still think highly of him and never considered him to be too much of an "insider" or worried that he spent too much time "outside the district."

Schmidt supporters just want to avoid the fact that Schmidt is a Taft-Householder loyalist who raised our taxes and helped wreck the Ohio Republican Party!

It's great to see that our future President Rob Portman was a the game last night. God, we sure miss him. It has been so difficult having to go from an A+ all class congressman to an F- lying fool congressional representative like Schmidt. What have we done to deserve something the likes of Mean Jean. I pray hard that God will help us rid our district of her next week.

Taft or Schmidt? What's the difference? They both contributed to the ruin of this state and a loss of jobs. Thanks Jean for helping chase Ford out of Batavia with high taxes and not the four cyclinder transmissions as you stated. Did someone ever tell Jean there are no such things as seven cyclinder transmissions? I'd hate to see her talk about that on the house floor and make another fool of herself and those of us that live in the second congressional district.

Yes, our last good Congressman Rob Portman is in government service - in Washington DC, not Cincinnati. Portman now spends most nights in the DC area. Why isn't Jean Schmidt's liberal activist attorney Stan Chesley filing for an injunction to prevent him from voting on Tuesday like he is for some other people? It's total hypocrisy on the part of Team Schmidt/Chesley.

i dont understand this confusion over the whole "seven cylinder" comment. are you guys just desperate for material or truly ignorant? no one should have to explain to you that she was speaking theoretically. i'll bet you 'an hot fudge sundae' jean knows more about cars than most men on here...On a separate note, i'd like to mention that this is the third time in as many days that my mailbox has been blessed with the presence of a piece of bob 'ewen' (god bless the dayton daily news) campaign literature, two of which were solely bashing jean. of course, i assume someone else is using the "mcewen for congress" address since the congressman formally known as bob mcewen said himself there is no negative campaigning coming from his side. (unless you call his campaign headquarters, who denied that he ever said that). i can only imagine the outcry from the mcewenites if jean sent out literature with pictures of starving, tortured, and abused eritreans with the caption "it's a christian nation". whatever happened to the anti-jean folks on here that want to 'talk about the issues'? i heart double standards like the mcewens heart stan chesley.

It was so great to see Rob Portman last night on the game. What a great man. By the way, there is a difference in living in D.C. and Virginia. Living in Virginia is signal to living more permanently rather than the actual District.

RE: Rob Portman's future in politics (contrary to the supportive blogger above): does anyone remember an ambitious young Congressman-turned-OMB Director named "Dave Stockman?"

Portman is headed for political oblivion.......

RE: "Portman is headed for political oblivion."

Well, based upon Portman's career path so far, you couldn't be more wrong. Any other baseless, idiotic predictions you'd like to share with the group? No? Good. Go crawl back under your rock, you liberal nutjob.

Hello,

Now that the primary is over, and Jean Schmidt has emerged as the Republican candidate for OH-02, let's start talking about some facts:

We all know Jean is 40 hours short of the degree she claimed to have, and she called a decorated war hero a coward, so I will leave those alone.

Jean Schmidt has repeatedly claimed to be a "tax cutter" during her recent campaigns. Nothing is further from the truth. Jean voted for every single one of Bob Taft's tax increase. She voted to raise taxes on gas, making Ohio's Gas tax one of the highest in the nation. She voted to raise fees on driver's license fees and license plate fees. Jean Schmidt voted to create new taxes on towing services. She voted to create new taxes on dry cleaning services. Jean Schmidt voted for the largest tax increase in Ohio history: a 20% sales tax increase.

Jean Schmidt claims to be for the death penalty, yet she gave a lengthy speech in 2004 on the Ohio State House floor against the death penalty and voted to suspend the death penalty. On a survey conducted during one of Schmidt's campaign, she stated, again, she was against the death penalty. But she told the FOP she was for the death penalty.

Jean Schmidt was given thousands of dollars worth of gifts from a drug lobbying group which she failed to report. She then supported a bill that drug company wished to pass. The only reason Jean avoided official sanction was because she failed to win election to the State Senate.

Let's unseat Jean Schmidt. Vickie Wulsin is a viable candidate with views and beliefs that can be appreciated by republicans and democrats alike. Wulsin has the respectability of a Harvard Degree and an wonderful track record in line with the ideas and values of District 2 voters. Jean is in for a surprise, folks. Thanks for reading this long entry; I just wanted to clear up some things.
