An empty suit

Howard Wilkinson reports in Thursday's Enquirer:

Rep. Jean Schmidt’s lawyers filed a federal lawsuit Tuesday trying to keep her GOP primary opponent, Bob McEwen, from voting in the May 2 primary – but it turns out there was one major problem.

McEwen had already voted.

Now, Schmidt’s lawyers will go to the Hamilton County Board of Elections to prevent her Republican rival’s vote from being counted, saying he does not really live in Ohio’s 2nd Congressional District.

McEwen, a former congressman, walked into the Hamilton County Board of Elections Tuesday afternoon to cast what election officials call an “in-person absentee ballot.” Any voter can do it, simply by filling out a form and voting on the spot, instead of casting a traditional absentee ballot by mail.

Lawyer Stan Chesley, a major fund-raiser for the Democratic Party who was hired by Schmidt, went to U.S. District Court here Wednesday to file a motion asking that his request for an injunction against McEwen voting be dismissed, because McEwen couldn’t be prevented by the courts from doing something he had already done.

Chesley said he would file a complaint with the Hamilton County Board of Elections asking that McEwen’s vote not be counted. Schmidt’s argument is that the condo McEwen and his wife, Liz, own in Anderson township is not a valid voting address, and that they should be voting in Northern Virginia, where they own a home.

“I’ve been around politics a long time and I’ve never seen a politician who didn’t want his picture taken at 6:30 in the morning on Election Day, casting his ballot,” Chesley said.
If Chesley files a complaint today, the four-member elections board – two Democrats and two Republicans – likely will call a meeting for later this week to hear the complaint.

McEwen was campaigning in Pike County Wednesday and could not be reached for comment. Michael Harlow, his campaign spokesman, said the Schmidt campaign will be no more successful at the county board than they were in federal court.

“Mrs. Schmidt seems afraid of the ballot box and is trying to settle this issue in the judicial system,” Harlow said.

The title says it all... AN EMPTY SUIT!

I've never heard a better description of Bob McEwen than the title of this posting. Even when the News Democrat and Dayton Daily endorsed him, the best thing they could say about him was that he wasn't Schmidt.

Stan's right, even if he is a Dem. McEwen's trying to get out of something, and that only means he knows he is guilty. He turns negative and then he runs to vote and doesn't have any press covering it. I wonder if he's bought his ticket back to VA yet.

Yet another sneaky, albeit completely legal, tactic by "Bouncin' Bob" McEwen. Kudos to the McEwen campaign for out-foxing the "Master of Disaster" Stan Chesley. Is anyone else getting tired of his spokesmouth
Mike "I get paid by the word" Harlow? The guy uses more spin than a Maytag washer.

The truth, you all can't seem to let the truth get in the way of a good story.

The truth is that there is no voter fraud. The lawsuit was a joke that had no chance of going forward. It is nothing put a political stunt by the Schimdt people and Stan the man(a Democrat through and through) is more than happy to get the attention. He has always been about himself and getting attention. That is what the Schmidt people are doing trying to win the election with a bunch of garbage lawsuits. What are you afraid you are going to lose??

The Cincinnati Enquirer isn't stupid. They have their reasons for endorsing Jean Schmidt.

It has nothing to do with "An empty suit" and everything to do with an empty hall.

If Schmidt wins the 2nd Congressional seat, we can sit back and take a nap. That's right. Jean's speeches will put her audience asleep faster than Ambien.

I suggest anyone who must attend an event where Jean is the keynote speaker - bring a deck of cards - solitaire will serve as a diversion.

The Grand Old Party under Jeans's lackluster orations will stay "old" for another two years.

It is Jean and her Democrat friend, Stan Chesley, who filed "an empty [law] suit." But, of course, Jean's supporters don't get it.

I told you, the Cincinnati Enquirer isn't stupid.

Other than being led by biased media coverage, and opponents lying about McEwen's record, how can people actually think Jean is a more qualified Congressman than Bob?

Mr. McEwen is intelligent, personable, and incredibly knowledgeable on local, national, and international affairs. He has a record of getting things done, and has a great deal of respect from his current and former congressional peers, as well as many truly conservative leaders.

Anyone challenging and incumbant in a primary is at a great disadvantage because of Party etiquette to endorse the incumbant (obviously a self-serving insider rule). Still, faced with this and many other obstacles (affirmative action publisher of the Enquirer--doesn't want a woman to lose, private investigators and liberal lawyers, who know Bob would actually be able to make a difference in Congess, looking for and even making up scandals to try and skew the election in favor of a truly scandalous candidate, etc.) Bob is standing tall, getting out and talking to all the voters, including his opponents' supporters, and answers their questions with dignity and respect. I've not heard him take a nasty tone or curse or call anyone names, unlike his main opponent.

I would imagine he voted early so he could nip a frivolous lawsuit in the bud and in the process save taxpayer dollars and overworked courts from a complete waste of their time. Thank you, Bob!

To whoever keeps bringing up Bob's foreign country clients, please stop! Have you talked to Bob? Do you know exactly what he was doing for these countries and why? Remember also, he was working for a company who took them on as clients, he wasn't out soliciting for these jobs. What good came from his work? Weren't at least one of these countries an ally in the current war? Isn't it possible that by building a positive relationship with the leaders of the countries that people working on behalf of the persecuted church will have better access to these leaders to lobby on behalf of their Christian citizens?

When I saw the title "an empty suit", I was wondering whether it was describing Jean Schmidt, or liberal activist Stan Chesley's frivilous lawsuit. Like a true liberal, Jean Schmidt believes a judge should determine this election instead of the voters.

Bogus endorsements.
Bogus college degree.
Bogus faxes sent to the media.
Bogus lawsuits filed by liberal morons.

Why on EARTH would anyone vote for Jean Schmidt if they didn't have a job riding on it?

Stan Chesley might be a lawyer who is a democrat, but why when I drive around the Second District I see mostly all of Bob’s legally placed signs in Democrat yards. At least Jean’s sign folks don’t have to cross the party line. And by the way I am not going to go into illegally placed signs. But, I can name 15 – 4x8’s right now placed on ODOT property. I just don’t know if that makes such a difference to a 20 point deficit.

Schmidt ought to no better and should ashamed at hiring that two-bit ambulance chaser

If Jean wins this primary... BELIEVE ME... there will be no naps in the 2nd District for her...

She is going to have to work for YOU for a change... I will personally guarantee it...

Jim Parker for Congress - the ONLY Democrat who WILL NOT RAISE YOUR TAXES

If you think that's an exaggeration... check out the WKRC interview with the 2nd District Democratic candidates on blog.oh02.com. Mark my words... There is absolutely NO WAY for a Democrat who will raise your taxes to win in the most conservative Congressional District in Ohio. That leaves me as the ONLY viable candidate in November. Sorry folks but wouldn't you rather have me say it than 60% of the 2nd District voters in November?

McEwen record as a lobbyist shows money was placed in trust of his ability to perform. Many past Congressmen wish they were so blessed. McEwen has proven the ability to perform. Often overlooked in his previous performance are two important performance measures: McEwen's demand of staff to treat all constituents the same, and the success of individuals, congressional staff, who learned their skills under McEwen, resulting in fantastic careers. Please recall Bill Gradison, your representative to congress before Rob Portman. He lived near Washington and visited the district as little as possible. As you prepare to vote, please look at who can and will make good things happen for the 2nd district. Do you want a representative who has to be handled and "reminded" of their business, or a representative who has the ability to motivate and multiply the efforts towards success for the district?

The comment about yard signs. I drive around and see yards signs everywhere for both canidates, issues, etc. Every election is the same. Don't tell me that only McEwen signs are in wrong places. It is once again something that all Canidates do. But while we are on signs the one thing that the Schmidt people do have is operation clean sweep. They go around and destroy McEwen signs and take them down. I know of many McEwen signs in the last few days that are gone. McEwen has told his people and made it known they are not to touch the Schmidt signs. Also in every election over the past 20 years every I see signs everywhere, many where they are not suppose to be. Republican,Democratic, and those supporting or against issues. Don't even pretend that there are not hundreds if not thousands of Schmidt signs posted where they are not suppose to be. And please give us a break in comparing both canidates sign placement to Jean hiring a Democratic lawyer to file bogus law suits in a big political stunt.

The only empty suit is Bob McEwen here.

HAHAHA.

Schmidt's frivolous Federal lawsuit: Withdrawn

Schmidt's frivolous OEC complaint: Thrown out (4-0)

What's next Jean? Suing Bob for beating you in the primary?

Hey Republicans -- your candidates are pathetic. Open up a little and consider the Democrats.

Wow, stan said it well. I have never EVER seen a candidate pass an opportunity for easy press voting at 7 am. How lame.

In Reference to those attacking Jean for hiring Stan Chesley... as our President Ronald Reagan said "Hire the best people." Get the job done.

The desperation of the Bob McEwen supporters on this blog is palatable. You guys should be worried - Jean Schmidt has already defeated McEwen once before! Do you think voters in Clermont, Pike, Adams, Brown, and Scioto counties care about message board mudslinging? They're going to vote for the incumbent. The people who have posted anti-Schmidt comments on this board come across like a bunch of grade school kids taunting a classmate on the playground. Give it a rest!

As nasty as both camps have been I have to ask. How will any one be able to actual vote for the person who actual wins the primary? The harsh words and comments by both canidates and their supporters level me cold. When will anyone actual talk about issues and solutions?

Collin:

Had no idea that you had some web site and I could care less. Not attacking you but your actions that have taken this election to a new low. Being a part of a bogus lawsuit being filed to try and cloud the issues was a sad political stunt. No judge was going to file an injunction on a bogus lawsuit like that, with its miss spelled words and all. And as we saw today the elections commission made the decision to not even go to the 2nd step of hearing the complaint against Bob about residency. Another strike in the residency claims by Schmidt. The reason I singled you out is because you have told many things are not true and then you were directly involved in a ridiculous politial stunt.

Could care less about your web sites. Web sites are a dime a dozen.

Lastly I do support everyone to support their canidate. Put signs in their yard, go to meetings or debates(if Jean would show up), give money, etc. That is America and I respect many Schimdt supporters I have met. I may not agree with them on this election but I respect them and know they are good people. What you have done is name call, and take it to a level far below where politics should be. You spent weeks calling Bob a carpetbagger and a check bouncer(lets remember not only was Bob totally exonerated but in 1992 Jean herself said in public records Bob had done nothing wrong and is totally innocent) You have said things that are not true and tired political tricks like Jean is ahead by 20% points. My guess is that there are other things you have done also. I just feel you crossed the line. Once agian you and others can support who you want this is America. But you went over the line and took politics into the gutter.

What a joke. Stan Chesley, Bill Clinton's biggest booster in Southern Ohio, now claims to be an expert on Republican political candidates. He claims that he never yet saw a candidate who did not want his picture taken, voting at 6:30 in the morning? Well, Stan, I ran in the Primary for Congress myself in 1974 & 1976, and I never once sought such a silly photo op. (Of course, Stan ought to be embarrassed for filing a completely frivolous law suit. But a Lawyer who will pass out his business cards to people identifying the smoking bodies of their loved ones in a makeshift morgue, has no shame.)

The Schmidt camp are desperate, because the woman has been caught in lie after lie. She has also ducked real debates. (Actually, that was what the Murtha insult was really about. She was too inarticulate to actually debate Murtha, so she pretended to be quoting a third party to actually slander him.)

If you cannot debate, you certainly are not qualified to go back to Congress. That should be obvious to anyone.

Now Bob McEwen? Those of us who fought for Ronald Reagan have been watching Bob for a long time. He is the real goods: An honorable man and an excellent debater!
