John McCain turns right

A NASCAR driver makes only left turns. A moderate Republican who wants to be his party's presidential nominee, on the other hand, makes only right turns.

Hard right turns.

Otherwise, John McCain - father of campaign finance reform, gun control advocate, issuer of dire warnings about global warming - wouldn't be in Ohio Tuesday campaigning for the likes of Steve Chabot and J. Kenneth Blackwell, neither of whom has ever been accused as being a card-carrying member of the Republican party's "moderate wing.''

McCain is clearly on a nationwide campaign to convince the right wing of his party that he doesn't have horns growing out of the side of his head. He has been careening across the country touting conservative candidates who, for the most part, were on the Bush bandwagon six years ago, the last time McCain ran for the GOP nomination.

So, today, he brings his campaign to Ohio, where conservative Republican primary voters may have a lot to say about who the the GOP presidential candidate is two years from now.

He'll appear first at a Chabot fundraiser in downtown Cincinnati and then dart off to Cleveland for a late afternoon event with Blackwell, the gubernatorial candidate who is the favorite of the evangelicals whose brothers and sisters down south sunk McCain's presidential campaign in 2000.

Six years ago, McCain barnstormed Ohio during the presidential primary in his famous campaign bus, The Straight Talk Express, in a futile attempt to stop George W. Bush.

Since then, The Straight Talk Express clearly has had its steering column tampered with.

Neither Chabot or Blackwell were never accused of being moderates even though they were once Democrats? That's interesting. This blog is terrible, I wish they'd just report facts such as "Moderate McCain attends fundraiser for Chabot." I think the people of Greater Cincinnati can make their own assumptions on what McCain is doing, we're smart enough. I don't know about the other side of the river, but that's why we have a NKY Blog right?

Oh Steve you shouldn't have allowed a Worthless Senator Like McCain to have spoken for you.

McCain is trying to give the Heart of America away to Illegal Aliens. McCain is no better then Ted Kennedy or maybe there the same. Yeah there the same worthless.

McCain wants to give Amensty to Illegal Aliens that have not one bit of respect for the laws of Our Nation. McCain is spitting in the face of My Legal Immigrants wifes face.

As much as people like McCain (myself included, most of the time), I've always known that he wouldn't get far in the primaries in '08.

The Republican power structure - where the money is, where policy is set - is off far to the right, way out of McCain's grasp. He's finally realized this, but far, far too late to appeal to the barking nutjobs that decide who'll run.

Thanks for posting this item, Howard.

McCain has a tin ear. The Republican hard right gave its all and has failed miserably. McCain's jumping on board a sinking ship.

This photo says it all.

Go Cranley Go! Chabot is obviously scared bringing in McCain. Keep lifting up that combover and showing what Chabot's got underneath... nuthin at all. I believe you are going to win.

Chabot is the only senior member of the region's congressional delegation. (Boehner recussed by virtue of new role)

Do we really want to send JC, the guy who can't get along with anyone, flips off the Mayor during Council, and grandstands on inane issues to represent us?

Accomplished leader? This guy has no "real world" experience. At least Chabot was a teacher who put himself through law school at night.

And he has a really nice haircut! He's not balding, really. No really. His hairline is just receding a little. Comb-over? What comb-over? That is not a comb-over! no, really......

I'd like to know where Anon 2:07 PM got the idea that Chabot was a former Democrat. He ran for Council as an independent twice because he didn't get the Republican endorsement (this is back when the GOP actually ran something like a full slate and actually won more than two spots). Even during that time, he was obviously a Republican, having managed campaigns for Republican candidates in years he did not run for council.
