Q: When is a debate not a debate?

A: When it's in Blue Ash, apparently.

The latest round in the back-and-forth between the campaigns of Jean Schmidt and Bob McEwen over debates came Thursday afternoon when the Schmidt campaign issued a notice saying they had agreed to an April 19 half-hour televised debate on WLWT (Channel 5).

This came a week or so after Schmidt pulled out of a debate sponsored by the Anderson Township Republican Club. Her campaign manager, Allen Freeman, claimed the pro-McEwen crowd in Anderson was laying in wait to do a number on her, just like they did on Pat DeWine in the special GOP primary last spring.

This left the Schmidt camp eager to show that they are not afraid to go toe-to-toe with McEwen - thus, Thursay's press release, in which Freeman crows that his candidate is now committed to no less than four "face to face debates'' with McEwen - the WLWT affair, an April 30 appearance on WKRC-TV's Newsmakers show, a meeting in front of the Dayton Daily News and an April 12 event at the Blue Ash Republican Club.

The two half-hour TV debates will, in fact, be face to face encounters. The Dayton editorial board meeting will be whatever the Dayton Daily News wants it to be; and, at any rate, the voting public is not invited.

The Blue Ash Republican Club meeting is nothing like the "face to face debate'' described in the Schmidt news release. Freeman acknowledged as much to the Enquirer Thursday afternoon.

What it is is the political equivalent of "open mike night'' at your corner bar - candidates show up at the Blue Ash Recreation Center and get up on their hind legs to deliver a short stump speech to the GOP faithful. No interaction between the candidates; no debate.

Long experience has convinced us that politicians are more interested in debating about debates than in debates themselves.

My name is Jim Parker and I am the first person in America who officially decided to try to be the next Congressman to serve the children and families of Southern Ohio in the 2nd Congressional District. I even declared before Jean Schmidt. I challenged her to a debate and she did NOT respond. Then Bob threw his hat into the ring. So I challenged him too. At the time, I was the only Democrat in this race.

I understand that now there are other candidates and that I have to win the primary before I get to reasonably challenge either Bob or Jean to a debtate. But I want the world to know that they both ignored my challenge. My belief is because they both know that if I get in front of enough people in the 2nd District, that people will realize that when it comes time to push that button in the booth, they need to cast a vote for the economic future of Southern Ohio. They need to cast a vote to try to keep keep their children from growing up and having to move away from Ohio because of lack of economic opportunity. They need o cast a vote to save Medicare from the worst fiscal disaster in our nation's history. They need to cast a vote for a person who will work tirelessly, NOT POLITICALLY, to serve the people of Southern Ohio with all of his heart. Neither BOb nor Jean fit that description. I do.

They have failed to respond to my challenge for a debate because they are concerned that too many people will see a Democrat who can actually win this election for the first time in 32 years. That would be a political disaster for either of them. That's why they are afraid to talk about healthcare, the economy and the war in Iraq with me in the room.

I drove to a candidate's forum in Warren County last night (100 miles from our house) and both Jean and Bob failed to show up.

I have a suggestion for the people of Southern Ohio. Let's end this ridiculous and sorry excuse for leadership that you have to choose from... Don't let either one of them win. This is a call to every Democrat, Republican and Independent voter who lives in the 2nd Congressional District. Vote for Jim Parker on May the 2nd. If for no other reason, so that one of these two will finally have absolutely no excuse to debate me.

The Economy, Healthcare and the War in Iraq are more important to me than any political campaign will ever be... These are people's lives we are talking about. The future of the American Middle Class and the Baby Boom Generation is at stake. You can vote for Jean or Bob, but do you REALLY think that they have the answers to America's problems? It is time for them to go!

Jim Parker

Howard, great article that finally and accurately shows that Jean Schmidt is afraid to come before the voters. I hope voters see that their congressional representative is afraid. She has got to go. Heck, I'd settle for any Democrat at this point. As a Republican she has lost my vote forever. Never again will I vote for her and I did vote for her in the last election. Talk about "cut and running." Hello Jean, this the pot calling the kettle.

First MEAN JEAN faxes a letter to McEwen's campaign office trying to get the upper-hand regarding holding debates.

Then, the letter states that MEAN JEAN will only debate under her terms, agreeable locations, etc.

Finally, though, her letter states that "..time is running out. I have many fundraisers that I cannot now cancel."

Doesn't this 'lady' get it?

She owes it to us (the voters who unfortunately are suffering as her constituents too) to debate McEwen - NOT just to stuff her little pony-tails with more campaign $$.

What is the honorable thing to do? Make yourself available to the voters who want to hear an open and honest exchange? Or should you hide behind campaign fund-raising?

Certainly anyone, even somebody with 2(?) degrees from UC would know that fund-raising NEVER should supersede the voters.

Please Jean, do yourself (and us) a favor. Kindly step aside on May 2nd. You're destroying what little is left of the pride of Congressional District OH-02.

Hey Parker, I'm running for public office in 2012, let's debate now, o.k.? Come on Jim, this is really getting old. Timing is everything and it's not time. Your requests to debate are premature and out of line. After primary season, then you can debate if you are the Democrat candidate and the Republicans have their candidate - just God forbid it be Jean Schmidt.

Oh, yeah, one more thing, Parker, how did you contact the Schmidt and McYouKNowWhoIAm campaigns? Do you have any proof that you contacted them? Certified mail receipts? E-mails?

"Duffy Beischel" is a bought-and-paid for parody of a local GOP club member, a creation of the imagination of McEwen's out-of-state spinmeisters, but at least "he" has some correspondence where someone could at least maybe, especially if they had drank the McEwen Kool Aid, get the idea Schmidt was going
to show up in Anderson.

What have you, Jim?
Oh, yeah, how's that campaign for the DEMOCRATIC PRIMARY coming, Jim? Think you can beat Wulsin, or Jacobs?
