DeWine criticized for Ney fundraiser

Sen. Mike DeWine got some heat Friday from Democrats over his plans to attend a fundraiser this weekend for Rep. Bob Ney, who has been linked to the unfolding scandal surrounding former Washington lobbyist Jack Abramoff.

Abramoff has pleaded guilty to using a free golf trip to Scotland and other gifts in an attempt to bribe Ney and others for official favors. Ney has denied any wrongdoing and has complied with a Justice Department subpoena for documents.

So Democrats called on DeWine to cancel his appearance at Ney's fundraiser.

"The people of Ohio are tired of the scandal, corruption and cronyism they see in Columbus and Washington," Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee spokesman Karl Frisch said. "Sen. DeWine’s decision to raise money for one of the principle architects of that corruption is proof positive that he’s part of the problem. Mike DeWine should cancel the fundraiser and join with Democrats in fighting for the return of ethics, honesty and accountability to our government."

DeWine told the Enquirer that he's known Ney for a long time and he supports him. He said he was not planning to cancel his appearance at the fundraiser.

"I've known Bob Ney - he’s been a friend of mine - since he was in the Legislature and I was lieutenant governor," DeWine said. "He and I worked on things back then. He’s a friend of mine."

By the way, recognize the name "Karl Frisch"? Frisch formerly worked as campaign spokesman for Democrat Paul Hackett, an Indian Hill lawyer and Iraq war veteran who dropped out of Ohio's U.S. Senate primary earlier this year.

I think it's time Mike DeWine steps aside to spend more time with his grandkids and lets a real conservative step up to the plate. One that won't need a footstool to reach the podium, either.

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Secretary of Sate J. Kenneth Blackwell is on record opposing any constitutional amendment to expand gambling.

Although he opposes potential November ballot initiatives to permit slot machines at Ohio’s horse-racing tracks, Republican gubernatorial candidate J. Kenneth Blackwell holds stock in the world’s leading maker of slot machines.

Critics say Blackwell’s investment in Reno, Nev.-based International Game Technology is inconsistent with his views on gambling because he could profit if the company ever puts slots in Ohio.

Brian Rothenberg, spokesman for the Ohio Democratic Party, said that as an owner of IGT stock, Blackwell "stands to make a profit off something he says he’s ideologically opposed to. How does he reconcile his conscience from his pocketbook? "

Blackwell spokesman Carlo LoParo said that is not an issue because Blackwell opposes the expansion of state-sponsored gambling and "there’s no conflict, real or perceived."

Blackwell will fight any gam- bling ballot issue because he does not think such gambling provides a stable funding stream for government — and that for every $1 it brings into a community, $3 are spent on social and other costs, LoParo said.

Even so, David P. Zanotti, president of the Ohio Roundtable, a Cleveland-area publicpolicy group, called Blackwell’s position "a raging inconsistency."

"The issue is why would he want to own stock in gambling companies that facilitate the destruction of human lives? "

Hmm, first Blackwell claims to not "know" he owned stock in a voting machine co. now we discover he also invests in gambling technology. Can you say hypocrite? When will people wake up?

This just goes to show how pervasive the culture of corruption is in the republican party

It looks like Frisch had thewhines number then and he has it now as well.

I find it amazing that you attempt to discredit the message with your connect the dots ploy.

Why don't you connect the dots with Ney and the culture of corruption.

Won't the (R)wrong wing fishwrap grant you journalistic freedom or are you the one drinking the red Kool-aid ?

It would appear even hindlick cound'nt get you to cough up the truth regarding the (R)wrong wing card house of corruption.

So why pick on DeWine? Aren't Ney, Delay, and our 2nd district prize Jean Schmidt all endorsed by RNCC, John Boehner, Denny Hastert and Rob Portman?

Could it be they have their money on the Democrats?
