McEwen's turn to release a poll

Two days after Rep. Jean Schmidt's campaign touted a poll showing she has a 25-point lead over GOP primary rival Bob McEwen, a new poll commissioned by the McEwen campaign shows the two are just two points apart.

Say what?

That's right. The new poll, from Zogby International, shows that three weeks before the May 2 GOP primary, the race between McEwen and Schmidt is in what the McEwen camp calls "a statistical dead heat."

The poll of 400 likely Republican voters, conducted on April 5-6, shows Schmidt with 35 percent to McEwen's 33 percent. Also in the poll: 3 percent chose someone else and 29 percent were undecided. The poll had a margin of error ofplus or minus 5 percentage ponts.

The poll also showed McEwen with high favorables across the district, among both men and women. McEwen’s favorable/unfavorable rating was 46 percent to 13 percent among men, 43 percent to 12 percent among women, 42 percent to 12 percent in Hamilton County, 44 percent to 10 percent in Clermont County, and 41 percent to 19 percent in Warren County. The poll gave incumbent Schmidt a job approval rating of just 41 p0ercent.

The poll also indicated that 59 percent are less likely to vote for a candidate who has falsely claimed education credentials not earned and 63 percent are less likely to vote for a candidate who has falsely claimed endorsements from other officials. The poll showed McEwen in the lead in Adams, Brown, Hamilton, Scioto, and Warren Counties.

“This poll, conducted person-to-person, shows that the race is a statistical dead heat, with strong favorables for Bob McEwen and not-so-strong job approval ratings for the incumbent. This poll also shows that a majority of voters are particularly concerned about issues of character,” McEwen spokesman Michael Harlow said. “Furthermore, we have seen a strong shift in our favor in terms of endorsements, contributors, and volunteers.”

UPDATE:

Here's what Schmidt campaign spokesman Allen Freeman had to say about the poll:

"This is a classic reaction. Someone else comes up with a poll that has positive numbers and you go out and do your own poll. This is a typical strategy and this is what we expected," he said. "Our internal polling has been showing that we’re up by 20 points."

Freeman said based on that, he's comfortable saying that McEwen's new numbers are "no where near accurate."

"You can ask a question any way you want to get any answer you want," he said.

For clarity, here are some of the questions that were asked (in this order):

If the Republican primary election for Congress were held today, and the candidates were Jean Schmidt and Bob McEwen, for whom would you vote?

Thinking about incumbent Jean Schmidt's work as your representative in Congress, how would you rate the job she is doing?

Are you proud of Jean Schmidt as your congressional representative, or are you embarrassed because of her?

Would it make you (more likely, less likely, etc.) to vote for Jean Schmidt if you knew that she had wrongly stated that she had won political endorsements from individuals or groups when those people and groups had actually never endorsed her?

Would it make you (more likely, less likely, etc.) to vote for Jean Schmidt if you knew that she had wrongly stated that she had earned two college degrees when she had actually earned only one?

The Schmidt-heads are rather quiet. They were actually drinking the Kool-Aid thinking their candidate had an insurmountable lead. Of course that was the WCPO poll. Now, with a real scientific poll from a reputable polling firm, Schmidt looks like she is in deep-schmidt and dropping like a rock. Character counts Jean. It's a shame you lost yours.

Looks like a classic push-poll. I'm surprised that McEwen has sunk to that level so soon.

As a McEwen supporter I'm equally proud of this poll and the fact that Bob's campaign finally took the picture of Jean Schmidt off their website. It only took them a few weeks to notice.

There is one problem for the Democratic Party of Southern Ohio. There is absolutely no way that Thor, Vic or Gaby can ever win an election in the most Conservative Congressional District in Ohio in November. It doesn't matter if they are running against McEwen, Schmidt or Kermit the Frog. Please don't make me say I told you so...

This is the most conservative Congressional District in Ohio. No Democrat has won this district in the last 32 years. Paul Hackett couldn't do it and he had $1.3 million dollars, everybody helping him, no incumbent and he was running against Jean Schmidt. How many times do we have to get hit on the head before we realize what's hitting us on the head?

It's not their fault. Their hearts are in the right place. They just live in the wrong Congressional District. They would do extremely well if this was New York, Massachusetts or California. But it's not... It's Southern Ohio and their positions which have been stated throughout this campaign will prevent them from ever winning in this District.

We need to win 15 seats in the US House of Representatives if we are ever going to take our country back. The only way to win this one is to offer a different kind of Democrat who can actually win in November. Thor, Vic and Gaby are not it and if you spend your vote on them on May the 2nd, you will be personally responsible for the re-election of Jean Schmidt. I don't care what Bob's poll says... I trust it as much as I trust him to balance your family's checkbook or your federal budget.

I think we all know who wrote this...

This "poll" is an illegal and unethical "push poll." Any taxpayer can file a complaint with the Ohio Elections Commission or Federal Elections Commission. McEwen belongs in jail for many things: passing bad checks, disorderly conduct at the water plant, and stealing computers from the Warren County Republican Party.

Those jobless losers hanging around the McEwen office all day munching donuts and drinking coffee might want to stay clear of there. When the cops show up, you might find yourselves being hauled off to jail.

McEwen is a joke. His candidacy is a satire of a political campaign, like something out of the Simpsons. He touts a bunch of has-beens and total nobodies on his endorsement page. His webpage is hosted in Georgia, as noted by BizzyBlogger. His pollster is in Washington D.C. He lives in Virginia. He threw a dart at a map and ended up here

There is no way Schmidt is up by 25 points - their internal polling? Riiiiggggghhhhtttt. About one in ten people I talk to support Schmidt. The other nine cannot stand her and say they will either vote for McEwen or will probably vote for McEwen. I think McEwen's poll has to also be off, I suspect he is at least ten points ahead of Schmidt. Schmidt is going down. Boy to be a fly on the wall at Schmidt's house on May 3. Wooooo hooooo, I'd bet I'd hear some colorful language.

What a crock; what a waste of time and money.

The crippled Mcewen campaign will need much more than cosmetically cooked numbers to win in May.

If we have any chance of beating Schmidt the mantra needs to change...

"More Finney, not More Jenkins."

I dare you to release all of the demographics of your "Likely Republican" sample. Prove to those of us who are holding out hope that Schmidt could be de-elected!

I'm a little suprised that Zogby would participate in what amounts to a "push poll". Push polling is a dishonest polling technique, which has been condemded by the American Association of Political Consultants.

That being said, I support neither Jean Schmidt nor Bob McEwen. I am a former Republican who is supporting Dr. Victoria Wulsin in this race. So, where's the poll for the Democratic race???

I think it's ironic...McEwen released his own doctored up push poll and even that didn't say he was winning. On the contrary, the poll Jean released was done by an independent, credible and reliable source and she's winning in that poll. If I were McEwen, I think I'd run back to my real home in Virginia and call it a day!

Pay for a poll and you get the results that you want!

Jeez...anon 9:48pm seems to have some anger management issues stemming from his/her growing realization that Jeannie is going to lose. There's nothing "illegal" about this poll, it doesn't ask any "push" questions until after they get the baseline support info for the candidate and Zogby is a very respected national polling outfit.

Get over it. Accept your fate.

All the Schmidt-heads who think this is a push poll should read this:

Anon 11:43 - I am not quite sure what you were trying to say but I think I agree with your "mantra"

This poll seems good for Bob but there is much more that needs to be done. If we have any hope of beating Schmidt, team Mcewen needs to focus on the advice that Chris provides. He has been around this area for a long time and is a real pro. I dont know who this new guy is... but I believe that it would be a mistake to not follow Finney's guidance to the "T".

I have heard from friends inside of the Mcewen camp that big decisions are being made without his input.

Mark my words; If Mcewen dosent win... it will be because they didnt listen to Chris.

I have seen hundreds of polls in my political career but this one is so bad it makes me laugh. This poll is so distorted that McEwen could be sued for political malpractice.

Polls are taken of samples of voters in an election. That sample must accurately reflect the demographics, geography, and registration of the electorate or what you have is poll of some strange irrelevant sample.

What we have here is a sample so convoluted that there are only two explanations as to why it was polled. Either ignorance or an attempt to achieve a desired result is the only possible explanation.

I find this poll so errant in demographics, Geographic’s, and registration that there is no way a polling company could be that ignorant. The desired results clearly drove the creation of a crazy sample.

Registration.

This is a 400 person sample size poll. Yet only 308 of the respondent claim they are Republicans. That’s right 1 out of every 4 of the polling participants in a poll of “Republican Primary Voters” is either a Democrat or an Independent. Neither of course can vote in a Republican primary. This is outrageous.

Further 12% of the sample describes itself as Liberal and another 2% say they are progressive. Amazingly only 46% call themselves the least bit conservative. The GOP primary electorate in the 2nd District is approximately 85% conservative.

The McEwen poll would have us believe that Conservatives make up only a minority of the Republican primary electorate. Ignorant or contrived?

Age

The McEwen Poll claims that 16% of the voters on May 2nd will be under the age of 30. That number historically is closer to 2 percent. Further the McEwen poll states that seniors will make up only 14% of the primary electorate. Seniors in a Republican Primary Electorate will constitute a minimum of 45% of the vote but in light turnout can be the majority age demographic. Two out of every three senior votes are discounted by this ridiculous poll. Ignorant or Contrived?

Geography

Bob McEwen clearly doesn’t understand the make up of this district very well. This poll claims that only 33% of the vote comes from Hamilton County. That number is closer to 45%. Further he relies on 22 percent of the vote coming from the counties at the eastern end of the district. That number is closer to 12%.

Summary

This is a very, very bad polling sample. One out of every four respondents claims not to be a Republican. Two out of every three seniors are thrown out of the sample. Half of the Conservatives are left out of the poll. And the population centers in the West are ridiculously reduced while the East is exaggerated.

I would like to say that this is just a mistake made by a polling professional that honestly got it wrong. However, this looks entirely like a cooked sample designed to achieve a positive result for Mr. McEwen.

Either way this is amateur hour. No serious political professional would look at this for a moment and not laugh. This is deception pure and simple.

Is Jean Schmidt embarassing?
Yes.
Does it matter to me who wins this primary?
No.
McEwen and Schmidt are both criminals.
Neither could spell the word "ethics."

No redeeming qualities there for either candidate.

Who cares.

First, before any of the so called "push questions" were asked, they asked who you were going to vote for. You cannot ignore that about 35% said Full-of-Schmidt and another 35% said McEwen. Then the push questions were asked. Jean is in deep-Schmidt. She lies and lies and lies.

Schmidt is for the death penalty and against it. She is for and against admitted homosexuals in the military.

She is against abortion - even when necessary to save the life of the mother - that will go over great with women.

Schmidt is the worst possible choice in this election.

Interesting on the poll, about 65% of the people responding did not say they would vote for Schmidt. Yes, some are undecided. But in the last primary, about 65% of the people did not vote for her. Interesting how the two numbers are almost identical. Which leads me to believe that no matter what, in the Second District, 65% of the people don't like her.

I voted for Schmidt once, but never again. The fact that she has flip flopped, lied and voted for raising taxes and then lied about why, isn't as important as the fact that she hasn't 1/10 the credibility that McEwen will have when he walks back in January of 2007.

The BullSchmidters are naturally responding with the standard line, "it's a push poll." But before they did that, they should have saved themselves the embarrassment of being proven wrong by getting a copy of the actual script of the poll.

http://www.zogby.com/Ohio-script.pdf

This is no push poll. The horserace question was even asked before the questions about Mean Jean's character came up, so the BullSchmidters can't even claim that these questions biased the vote question.

I have visited the broom closet campaign headquarters of Jean Schmidt. there is no way a campaign is being run from it. that means Barry Bennett, on a tax payer's dime, is running the Schmidt campaign.
i have visited the McEwen headquarters and it isa real office with real people running a camapign.I have seen volunteers come and go. McEwen has a is a real campaign.
Neither poll had a large enough sample to be totally accurate.but the methodology on the Mcewen- Zogby pollis statisticly valid. The WCPO poll by Surveys USA isnot. Why you ask? Anyone could answer a recorded phone poll, including my 6 year old grandson. The Zogby poll included live respondents taken from a list of likely to vote Republican primary voters.

Thisdoes not mean a push poll. It alos allowed mcEwen toidentiy the Schmidt weaknesses. Jean has liedfor decades. Since 11-2-1989 when she told The Clermont Sun has not only had two degrees but that she had some graduate hours as well.
Jean has distorted the words of others ,Stae Rep and USMC Colonel Danny Bubp, Congrssman Steve Chabot and Congressman Tom Tancredo. She has lied on her web site claiming three major funraisers to be held in her district when most have been from Washington D.C.

This has shown a pathological tendancy to put one's self above all others. I do not need that to represent me in D.C.! Jean should have knownto clean herown closet before running. Too many skeletons to be a credible voice for the second district.

Hey Collin,

Everytime you say something it is either a lie or wrong or just a smear comment. You said "push poll." Maybe you should have researched. Sounds like the poll was done by an orgainization that is legit. This same group did a poll that favored Schmidt in the last election. Of course you did not even check the facts now did you.

Still waiting for Collin to throw out the "Bob Mcewen Stole office supplies from Warren County" Such a lie on this site and already proven flase but it was thrown out again.

Schmidt supporters can only state lies, make statements before they get facts(then they are proven wrong), or throw out smear tactics.

Wow that sounds like Jean Schmidt.

We need her gone that is for sure.
