Oops. I may have a conflict

It looks like there may be a problem with Greg Harris' candidacy for Commissioner Pat DeWine's seat.

Harris said today he may have a conflict of interest because he sits on the Governor's Workforce Policy Board.

Harris says it may be a conflict of interest because on the Governor’s board, he can help funnel money to Ohio counties, including Hamilton County. If elected commissioner, that could be seen as a conflict.

“I could be seen as funneling disproportionate resources to the county I represent,” he said.
He’s checking with Governor Ted Strickland’s office to get an opinion on the issue.

“I’m pretty sure Strickland’s office will say if you run for commissioner you have to give up your seat on the board.”

Harris is meeting with the Democratic Party later today to talk about the potential conflict and decide whether the party should have a backup candidate in case Harris doesn't run.
"If there is a conflict, I don't know if I would be willing to give that board seat up because it allows me to effect positive change on issues I'm passionate about," said Harris in an e-mail.

If he doesn't run, that would put the Dems in the position of having to find a viable candidate to run against Greg Hartmann, and getting the 50 needed signatures in less than a day. That's probably not too difficult a feat, though, since tons of Democrats will be in one place for the caucuses tonight.

". . . although it is unclear exactly why that would be a conflict of interest."

Did you ask him?

Yeah, Harris is a dumb guy. That's why he has a PhD and advises Governors.

Who is he kidding? It's not like that is an important board or anything. Who has even heard of it? Get real. He's just looking for an out.

Hartmann couldn't even carry the county in his run for Secretary of State, Harris has nothing to be worried about.

Is it possible you guys are all idiots? Everything is about jobs (and contracts), every fricken' thing! THose with the jobs control the money, those with the money control the power. IDIOTS!

Taft's administration left the workforce policy boards across the the state in shambles after corrupt pay to play.

Those operating our "One Stop Centers" are a dismal failure of self-serving interests that no reporter has bothered to investigate;
1) widespread discrimination
2) ineffective "training" programs on how to write a resume, how to interview, how to dress, etc
3) program's for "displaced homemakers", felons, and urban teens have been a total joke - run like a pyschology intervention rather than about getting npeople real jobs that can support families
4) what other program maintains a 1+ year financial reserve because they can't find a constructive way to spend the money (how about real educatioin instead of "resume writing classes" over a 6 month period
5) did you know that if you are out of work you are entitled to up to $3K in educational funds? Best kept secret in the state of OHio - monies are controlled by the Workforce Policy Boards.

So, yea, Harris' work is very important in getting services, education and programming to OHioians - Do I think there's a conflict - heck, no. That's politics!!!

well, Harris's out makes sense in light of CityBeat's reporting on Todd's plan to have Hartmann (and himself) run unopposed.

But to his credit, he appears to take these things seriously (unlike Chris "Just say 'no!' to White Domination" Smitherman).

If Harris couldn't win two Congressional races AND in the heavily-Democratic city, how in the hell is he going to win Commission? Hmmm, unpaid workforce policy board make-work job, or $84K Commission seat. Hmm, what to do, what to do.

Looks like the Dems are getting ready to put a bigger name in to compete with Hartmann. Harris did not have a chance with DeWine. With DeWine out, a "big name" Dem would have a better chance I think. I'm not sure that this was the best move for the Rep party.

Harris works for KnowledgeWorks Foundation dumb ass. People who serve on boards have day jobs.

Anon 7:46:

Do you not know what it means to serve on a board?

Boy, you Hartman supporters are brilliant.

Candidates who don't enjoy famous last names or possess lots of wealth need to have the grit and determination to run several times in order to win. Succesful politicians like Chabot, Qualls and Governor Strickland actually have at least a dozen losses between them.

Anon 9:30- what are you talking about? You mean the "unpaid make-work" comment?

Is Hartmann still a defendant in that lawsuit filed against him in California?
