Berding: We Need A Retreat

Cincinnati City Councilman Jeff Berding held a press conference today - a good day to do it, news-wise, because very little else is going on - to say that he'll be introducing a motion next week to mandate a retreat for council members, Mayor Mark Mallory and City Manager Milton Dohoney.

Berding says public safety and attracting new business would be among his top items to discuss for an "action agenda." City officials stopped having retreats about four years ago, he said, and shouldn't have. He'd like to see the retreat happen in the next couple of months, possibly as a birthday present for himself. (His birthday's Feb. 8)

"I want to go beyond talking about a good idea," he said. "I want to execute a good idea."

He says he already has started looking for the $2,000 or less needed to rent a location and hire a facilitator, that he wouldn't expect city money to cover it.

In council's last retreat in 2002, members went to Hueston Woods State Park outside of Oxford for two days. It was council's first retreats ince 1996. Two visions for the Cincinnati of 2020 were laid out: Cincinnati will stay true to its heritage, remaining as a beer-brewing, family-friendly town that honors its Porkopolis past; and Cincinnati will become a more cosmopolitan city with eclectic neighborhoods, multi-lingual street signs and a WNBA franchise. That retreat was paid for with a grant from the Knowledge Works Foundation.

A stumbling block for organizing retreats in the past: having them in front of the media. Since Cincinnati's charter doesn't allow for executive sessions, any retreat would be open to reporters.

At that last one, former Vice Mayor Jim Tarbell begged then-City Hall reporter Gregory Korte not to enter the room during the talk, saying Korte's presence would hurt officials' ability to speak openly.

The Enquirer covered it anyway.

Not just reporters, but the general public will be allowed to attend. There is something called the sunshine law Jeff. Go check it out.

The retreat will be a council meeting under a different name.

Jeff Berding should go on a retreat and not come back.

These politicos need to jump start their brain, I know just the spot, spend a few days at the Eureka Ranch, nothing like lounging around in a hot tub full of Jell-O, holding council meetings while stretched out in a casket, and paddling kayaks nekid to start thinking creatively

The Council agenda will NOT be hidden (paybacks to campaign money contributors). And Librarygirl is correct, GET INVOLVED. Most important, just say NO to multi language road signs (and call council and tell them "NO".)

Let's see where could the 'birdling' go to get the grand-standing stage he so desires ?

We know - City Hall !

We think the bird-ling will find some, 'corporate crony', city contractor to foot-tap the bill on the backs of citizens !

How about the tax grabbing bungals or parking lot attendants 3CDC ?

PATHETIC !

HAD ENOUGH, VOTE DEMOCRAT 2008 !

Berding and Bortz championed having closed door meetings last year and are now doing an end run around the sunshine law. I thought they were for good government, not this behind closed doors stuff.

I am.........The massive tax was defeated, and I can't wait until the city installs red-light cameras.

Do you folks understand executive sessions are critical when discussing personnel matters and the like. The media does not need to report on an open case, which could mess with the fairness of the suit. Tarbell begged the media not to be present in past retreats. There's a reason, they create effective government... open and honest dialogue to move our city forward. If the media is present will we hear the normal sound bites or will our leaders finally sit down and do what we pay them to do? Hopefully this council can set an agenda for our future. Come on folks, it's not like they they're a secret society! (Cincinnati Beacon may think so)

Council has a single joint "personnel" matter they can influence: the City Manager.

The Dems caucus now, I suppose Monzel & Ghiz stick out their tongues in each others' presence now and again, and Bortz & Qualls probably confab at Charter. What's the problem?

Is Berding sounding a retreat already? "run away, run away!"
