DeWine running for judge, Hartmann for commission

Commissioner Pat DeWine announced he will not seek re-election to county commission. Instead, he's setting his sights on a Common Pleas Court judgeship. We have the story here.

DeWine says he is changing his political path for "personal and professional" reasons. Read his statement here.

Now, Clerk of Courts Greg Hartmann is expected to run on the Republican ticket for DeWine's commission seat and former Senator Patricia Clancy, also a Republican, will take a shot at the Hartmann's clerk of courts seat.

The Democrats say the Republicans decided to play "musical chairs" with the race because DeWine's polling was bad. The GOP disagrees, claiming DeWine would have been easily re-elected.

Now, though, the Democrats have about a day and a half to figure out who to run against DeWine, Hartmann and Clancy in light of this shake up. They still plan to put Democrat Greg Harris, fresh off an unsuccessful City Council bid, up for the county commission seat.

Here's what Harris had to say about the shake up and the upcoming race:

"This musical chairs may be understandable. Its politics, but Greg Hartmann is going to have to make a more compelling case," he said. "I’m going to put out some pretty strong policy statements on how we can reinvent county government and revolutionize public safety in the county and create a workforce education guarantee for every citizen in aHamilton County and not only how to do it but how to fund it where to get the money. I’m going to offer a pretty compelling vision for Hamilton County going into the 21st century and invite (Hartmann) to present his own vision It's not just going to be about Republican musical chairs, but you’ve got to put ideas on the table and I look forward to doing it."

Hartmann is holding an 11 a.m. press conference to announce his candidacy.

Republicans are proving they ain't dead yet!

A nice shift that removes one of the most polarizing figures (Dewine) and replaces him with a name with allot of money (Hartman).

Now the R's can make nice.

Dewine saw what was coming and got out. Wilke would have beat him, or Harris.

Now Hartman cruises, and Harris is involved in another losing cause.

If Dewine sits on the bench for ten years people will forget some of his missteps.

Doesn't matter. I am going to put this in terms the corporate plutocrats running the Gang Of Pedophiles can easily understand: your brand sucks.

Face it, after the illegal war, record gas prices, record deficits, a tanking economy, record foreclosures, a worthless dollar, and their interest in using children for their sexual gratification, the "Republican" brand is dead.

They could run the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost for County Commission and will still lose.

Make no mistake about it, Dewine saw the writing on the wall, much as Neyer did before him.

This is a really good move. DeWine is an independent thinker who clearly isn't beholden to party bosses. We need people like that on the bench.

"replaces him with a name with allot of money (Hartman)."

Those wRong wingnut whacko concealed contributions didn't help heart-less with the SOS or the 'fischer of men' with council !

No indeed, they got their 'finney fanny' waxed !

We can't wait until Jennifer Brunner comes to town for the working man's fund raiser and takes the Harris pose for that lit-drop piece !

lol, lol, lol

Rove, rove, rove your schmidt, gently down the stream !

Look out Texas, he's coming home along with his bush-whacko buddy !

Musical politicians are appearing to be:

PATHETIC 'foot-tappers' !

HAD ENOUGH, VOTE DEMOCRAT 2008 !

This is not surprising, given how badly DeWine botched the jail tax issue. He still has not come up with an alternative solution.

Even though I don't like DeWine this move is a good one. It ensures that the Commission has a great candidate while maintaining a great presence in the Clerk's office.

How about some "pretty strong policy statements" about how to reduce spending and cut taxes?

Oh, wait, I forgot who we were talking about.

Are you telling me that Pat DeWine is the BEST candidate to run for a Common Pleas judge opening? What a joke! ANYONE with ANY criminal and/or courtroom experience AT ALL is a better candidate than DeWine. I can't believe how the political landscape NEVER changes...same names for different positions. Republican AND Democrat...And if the Hamilton County voters are dumb enough to keep electing these people, then Hamilton County deserves the crap the voters will later complain about. Judge DeWine...un-freaking-believable.

DeWine bet it all on just being an obstructionist. And he completely lost his base of support.

Half the Republicans hate him (especially on the West Side-just look at where Issue 27 did well), and Democrats won't vote for him against a Democrat. He was cooked, and he knew it.

This means a clean sweep for the Dems on the commissioners race, and they might pick up the Clerk of Courts as well.

Good riddance to another rotten COAST'er, Pat DeWine. He and his old man can both look for gainful employment in the private sector.

Anon 12:13--

I would assume his ideas on "reinventing county government" would have something to do with efficiency and holding the line on taxes. Harris ran on this issue as a Council candidate, and spoke a lot about cost saving that could be achieved by by streamlining gov't.

Anon 1:15 - Are you serious? Issue 27 did well on the west side? It lost almost everywhere on the west side With the exception of Green Township not a single, solitary west-side city, township, or village voted for Issue 27.
Nice try though.

It won Delhi and Green straight up, as well as the most Republican precincts in the City's west side. Basically, among Republicans, it was popular.

So DeWine pissed off his base.

Basically, about three years after it began, the so-called Heimlich/DeWine "revolution" made a shambles of County government, killed its budget, and now others are left to clean up their mess!

DeWine saw the writing on the wall, and couldn't hack picking up the pieces of the disastrous term when he and Heimlich led.

waht ever happened to good republicans that stood for something? Oh, that's right, they all fell to corruption via the absolute power corrupts absolutely doctrine.

So how willl DeWhine campaign for a post on the bench? Uhh, I'm tough on crime, well, no I'm not really. I support the NAACP goof-leadership that opposes any new jail space... I can't sentence you to jail because there is no space because I campaigned AGAINST the criminal justice system.

Oh,, I'm an independent thinker alright. I think only about and for myself

This is just precious --- I hope the Dmes can forward a viable candidate who actually believes in the judicial system.

(Oh yea, didn't DeWhine tell the judges to go ahead and sue them if they want more money? Didn't he say to eliminate jobs? Well, I have an idea - DeWhine can move his court reforms forward by winning the seat and then resigning to free up the money to balance the budget)

Actually Pat is very much an idea guy and principled conservative- I think he'd be a great judge.

"holding the line" on spending and cutting taxes are two very different things. When he first ran against Chabot Harris was a business-hating class warfare poster child. A lot of us remember that and don't believe for a second he's changed his tune. I'm not saying he isn't smart, educated, well-spoken and has a smoking hot (second) wife, he's just an ivory tower liberal ala' Roxanne Qualls and County Commission isn't a place for policy wonks; it has very limited and fairly-well defined responsibilities, mostly fiduciary, and what got Neyer, Dowlin & Bedinghaus into trouble was their profligacy with tax dollars. Harris won't be able to convince anyone he isn't the fox guarding the henhouse on the fiscal front, ESPECIALLY if his feel-good can't spend enough to assuage his Catholic guilt godfather Crowley runs for Treasurer.

The tragedy is the failure of the Dems to pick up the ball and get some good candidates. Dems have one judge--mallory. Dewine will be tough to beat, but jeez, shouldn't a heavyweight Dem jump in? Its going to be a Dem year all over the country and state but not here in corruptionnati.

Norma Holt Davis is the best candidate the Dems can run against DeWine... Wonderful. She got crushed in November running against Bernie Bouchard for a Municipal Court judgeship. Viable candidate? Not likely. Good job Dems.

Anon 3:40 - Nice try again. Just because you repeat a lie doesn't make it true. Anyone with a computer and a brain can see right through your lies. From the Enquirer's very own 11/8/07 article on the sales tax defeat - "Only five political jurisdictions supported the tax: Terrace Park, Wyoming, Indian Hill, North Bend and Green Township."

Green Township and North Bend were the only west side communities to pass it, and by bare margins too. That means the rest of the west side communities: Delhi Township, Cheviot, Harrison, Miami Township, Harrison Township, Crosby Township, Whitewater Township, City of Harrison, Cleves, Addyston, and Colerain Township ALL HAD MAJORITIES AGAINST THE TAX INCREASE.

Strike two...

Clancy's stopped growth in Colerain Township and broke up the Republican Club by endorsing Bernie Fiedeldy as a Trustee now her next victim is Hamilton County!
