This is not a moment for celebration - with all due respect - it is only a moment of acceptance. Accepting the reality that this community, due to the spending habits and lack of foresight of past leadership - has led us to the point where we must make difficult decisions and greater sacrifices than would have been necessary, in order to maintain someone's idea of the basics.
I, for one, don't consider the OTR patrols as gravy - the crime there is spreading throughout every one of the county's suburbs and we are negligient in not maintaining them when the Sheriff's office is threatening suits in a refusal to be more efficient and smart-budgeting.
Loss of the high school drop out prevention program guarantees a continuing escalation in jail costs in the future, but more importantly, a loss of a productive, taxpaying citizen.
Selling county space for billboards -- well, I'd like to see DeWine sell the space above his eyebrows -- tacky and crude and demonstrating the critical position the county is in. Next thing ya know we'll have Girls GOne Wild and condoms paying our bills.
The courts maintain their grandeur and their budget dishing out justice to mostly impoverished citizens lacking past and future opportunity.
There is nothing to celebrate accept the untied acceptance of a dire situation caused by past indiscretions .
Making the most out of a bad situation is admirable - but it isn't the same thing as progress. Progress will come when we see how this board of commissioners can make lemonade from a whole bunch of old lemons left for them to squeeze.
If the money is really not coming in to cover expenses and all the "frills" have been cut, what are the Commissioners going to do next year? They, both Demoduds and Repunks may have to breath the dreaded T word.
Stop Hamilton County deputies from patrolling downtown, release prisoners because of lack of space, abolish programs that aim to help people regain respectable citizen status - and THEN build a billion dollar 'Queen City Center' downtown - and watch it rot into the Ohio River because everyone is too scared to go down town now as it is - let alone put their business up in the 'tower of ghosts.' No wonder they designed it with a sea shell on top - to echo the incredible silence that will surround the thing - but you will be able to hear the Ohio River sludge by! Yep, I'd say that government leadership is doing really well! Hey, won't the Property Taxes from the 'tower of ghosts' bail Hamilton County out of its fictitious financial bind? Or is this a case of tax abatement for the wealthy again? Fictitious because - if government entities on ALL levels would work together this blasted governmental financial fiasco would not be this dying city's reality. Why doesn't LOCAL, COUNTY, STATE and FEDERAL government work in tandem for a change financially instead of being each other's worse adversaries on every platform imaginable?
As an employee of the County, I can honestly say thank you. I appreciate the fact my healthcare cost increased and I am lucky enough not to even get a raise! Not even a sliver to cover my cost of living increase. Oh, and thank you for also increasing my parking rate as well.
All the same though, as our Administrators and leaders still enjoy PAID parking and a simple walk into the Courthouse court yard or garage behind JFS. Oh, and thanks for making my walk to my lot a heck of a lot scarier. You guys think too much of us! I also relish the fact that the media reports the BOCC did not take a 3% increase in pay. Whoopie! They still took the other 2% of the 5% they are given. Please, do not patronize me any further.
Here is an idea, help the little man out a bit and quit lining the pockets of the leaders who helped get us here. Cut parking, cut the Administration salaries, take all of their salary increases, and stop lying.
Merry Christmas, glad we can expect more of the same. I enjoy being bent over year after year. My only consolation is I am actually helping our community.
My concern is how does Job & Family Services expect worker morale to increase when we are working under a "Pay for Performance" evaluation system? Monies were to be attached to this evaluation, and now we're being told there are no raises in the budget. I feel like the "Pay for Performance" should be abolished. The commissioners/county haven't kept up their end of the deal so why should we. And the commissioners should not be accepting raises if the front line workers who are doing the work are not getting them. Lead by example. The only recourse we have as county workers/taxpayers is to vote you all out in the coming elections!
If the County is so concerned about budgets and a lack of money why did they not prosecute the case worker that created false food stamp cases and used the proceeds for himself and robbed the state, county and federal governments of tens of thousands of dollars?
