Hamilton County turns blue? Purple, at least...

Caleb Faux, the Hamilton County Democratic Party's executive director, tossed a graphic up on the party's Web site recently that is most interesting.

It charts Hamilton County's performance in presidential election back to 1960; and it shows clearly that, since Ronald Reagan, the GOP vote in Hamilton County has been steadily declining while the Democratic vote has risen, just as steadily.

There was only one presidential election in those five decades where the Democratic candidate outpolled the Republican in Hamilton County -- 1964, when Lyndon Johnson defeated Barry Goldwater. No surprise there; that election was a rout; even many Hamilton County Republicans of the mid-60s were scared silly by the bellicose Goldwater.

Hamilton County's GOP vote for president peaked in 1972, when Richard Nixon won re-election in a landslide even bigger than Johnson's eight years earlier.

Reagan, of course, stomped Walter Mondale in 1984, here and elsewhere, but the GOP vote in Hamilton County has been heading south ever since -- except for a slight bump upwards in the 2000 George W. Bush-Al Gore contest.

For the past 20 years, Republican leaders in Hamilton County have watched as their most loyal voters have fled the county by the thousands, taking up new addresses in places like Landen, West Chester, and, worst of all for the Ohio GOP, Kentucky.

The last entry in the chart is not of a presidential contest, but of last year's Ohio gubernatorial race. It shows that, last year, Democrats pulled nearly dead even with the GOP in Hamilton County.

Ted Strickland came up only 1,923 votes short of Ken Blackwell out of 287,496 ballots cast. that's a difference of 0.66 percent. And Blackwell, of course, is a Hamilton County Republican.

Faux's take on all this? That next year's presidential election will be the one where the chart lines will cross; and blueness will reign in Hamilton County.

Check out the graph for yourself: http://www.hamiltoncountydems.org,

that's the typical Repug mentality. vote to keep my taxes low and let problems get worse. then, when the problems get too bad for their elitist tastes, cut and run to unspoiled places and start it over.

The Purple Haze is transversing Ohio -- and I think it is an incredible phenomena to watch and be a small part of.
Myself, a "registered Republican" and have been forever (the only "respectable" thing to do if you're a Catholic)but I stopped voting Republican in the Bush-Gore race- mainly because of what I saw happening in Ohio (all politics are local, starting with Bedinghaus who really set the stage for the Purple Haze here)
Slowly, I think Ohio will go Democrat until some scandal exposes that they have become what the Republicans became when in power.
By the way, good for the local Dems forwarding any type of thought provoking media attention.

Agree w/ 12:45 - Bedinghaus (& his current Bengal employers) don't get near the credit they deserve for the Democratic conversion.

But, sadly, it seems the "power effect" already seems to be affecting Todd & David.

Okay Caleb. Here are some facts to ponder. Yesterday, yes as recent as yesterday, the Republicans won the election in the 5th congressional district in the northwestern corner of Ohio. They easily defeated a Demcoratic contender in the ONLY election in America. That was yesterday.

If Hillary wins the primary and if Vic Wulsin wins the primary, the Republicans will win Ohio and the Republicans will win the 2nd congressional district of Ohio. Then all the Vic supporters will drown their sorrows at a Drinking Liberally meeting.

Vic Wulsin and Hillary Clinton are the two best things that ever happened to the Republican party. Caleb, I don't like the truth any better than you do but it is what it is. When are we ever going to find a candidate who can actually win the 2nd district in November? When is the Democratic party going to wake up?

Caleb, primaries are fun to watch and everything but the wrong candidates can't win in November no matter how much money they have.

Let's talk again in November.

The OH-05 election yesterday was not the only one in the US.
An election to replace Rep. Jo Ann Davis, who died this fall, was also held. Both were won, as expected, by Republicans. A Democrat had not won in OH-05 in about 60 years; in addition, the Republican, Bob Latta, is the son of a former Congressman, so name recognition also played into the victory. In both VA and OH-05, Bush had won in 2004 by over 10 pts. So the results were no surprise.

When is the last time a Democrat won the Ohio 2nd?

DemoK-rats can only win when disguising themselves as Republicans. Watch StevieD try to emulate Luken the Elder and Charlie My Boy in District 1. Watch the fawning Howard Wilkinson prop up "the Party."
Watch Steve Chabot win re-election

To Anon 7:45 12/7

Sure Latta the Republican won - that district is the most Republican in the State, even more so than OH-2 (Schmidt). But the Republican Party had to bus in staff and volunteers from around the country and drop half their Congressional campaign kitty (spending nearly $500,000) to do it, money they really didn't want to spend.

I'll take that as a win, making them work that hard to defend a seat that should have been considered a no contest gimme.

Wouldn't have happened at all six years ago.

Caleb, you're the kind of Democrat I love to confront in an election. When you get your keester kicked (14 points in
OH-5), you claim it as a victory. Keep that attitude, my man, and watch what happens when the Dems try to win the White House with Bill Clinton's wife or that empty suit, Barack Hussein Obama, leading the charge. When the dust settles and all the Democrat lawsuits are decided in favor of the GOP, I want to hear how you really won and how the Republicans' victory was pyrrhic at best.

Yes they won...but...as of last filing the NRCC had $2.6 million in the bank and were $3.6 million in debt. They just spent nearly 20% of what cash they had to hold us to a historically great performance in a deeply red district.

Seems like they were running a little scared to dump those kinds of funds into a race that was probably going to go their way anyway. I am from that district originally and I know that many lifelong Repubelicans who didn't vote due to Bob Latta's dirty politics in the primary and beyond. He won on his father's name alone.

Vote for change.
