Who'll Run Against Pat DeWine?

Lots of people think John Cranley might run for county commissioner. Today, he said no, that he's focused on City Council and City Lights, the development company he recently joined as partner.

Just for the record, we asked other recently re-elected council members if they're considering it.

So far, these have said no: Leslie Ghiz; Chris Bortz; Jeff Berding; and (through aide Brad Beckett) Chris Monzel.

The headline says "Who Will Run Against DeWine?" yet the article said they were asked if they were running for Commissioner. Of the Republicans there, did you ask if they were running for commish (this could also mean against The Odd Prune) or were you expecting them to take on DeWine in a primary?

Are you also going to ask who's going to run against Todd Portune?

How about David Crowley?

Odd Todd fights dirty. Anyone republicrat who takes him on better be prepared to roll in some thick dark Ohio River mud.

A GOP operative today told me today that a group of business folks that supported Issue 27 approached Greg Harris about running. I asked why they'd support someone who lost for council and congress, and he said they think with significant backing he'd be very electable in a one-on-one race. Harris said no.

So - Qualls runs and wins and then appoints....Kaup?

Hopefully, anyone but Boy Band Justin Jeffre. I'd vote in DeWine again before I'd select the belching bus boy.

I dont think any of you got your cards right. No one from city council will run. The Dems will pull some fruit out of the woods to run against DeWine. I guarantee that!

at 9:45 PM, November 15, 2007 Anonymous Anonymous said...

How about John Eby?

at 10:35 PM, November 15, 2007 Anonymous Anonymous said...

Bortz or Qualls would appoint Bates over Kaup.

Maybe Justin Jeffre will run! He will be the gas-guzzling-pollution-belching-RV-driving-Green Candidate for Commissioner!!! This will be the perfect opportunity for JJ to get crushed in 3 consecutive runs at public office!!! This will officially make JJ a "Perennial Candidate", you know what that means, one of those nutters who plays silly buggers by running in every election, year in, year out, with no chance of ever winning.

JJ's a laughing stock.

EEWWW... I do like the idea of Crowley running against DeWine or, hey, how about recruiting Dowlin to run against him as an Independent or Democrat --- that would be hysterical..What about Rhodes changing hats?

Against Todd - that's alot harder - he has broad support across the board -- hmmm ... I'd run a nobody who wants to make a name for themselves, 'cause I don't think anybody can beat him

what about qualls appointing this seidewitz guy?

Someone should run! DeWine's poll numbers are worse than Heimlich's. He has higher negatives within HIS own party than most of the Countywide Democrats.

I bet Scott Gehring's phone is just ringing off the hook with offers to manage campaigns. Oh, wait, he's so totally focused on his own state rep campaign. You know, the one where he can't even put a webpage together for. http://www.scottgehring.com/

I heard DeWine was going to step down and the GOP was going to appoint Scott Gehring. The man needs a job. He has an impressive resume: Fired from Ghiz's Office and tanked Melanie Bates' campaign.

.

How about Ebay - votes for sale !

This 'fishwRap' likes him !

The west-side likes him !

And guess what, WE LIKE HIM !

WIN - WIN ?

HAD ENOUGH, VOTE DEMOCRAT 2008 !

Harris: did those "business interests" give him "significant backing" in the council race?

Qualls: oh hell no! As much as I'd like to see her impact on the city diminished the county would never go for her.

Eby: could be.

Crowley: would do worse countywide than Qualls.

It occurred to me this morning: why would Jane ask 8th and 9th place finishers Berding & Monzel this question? They were hardly elected by mandate, and Monzel famously flamed out last time (Remember "The Barbarians Are At The Gates Of Hamilton County!")

Tarbell vs. DeWine
Smitherman vs. Portune

discuss.

Eby would be great. He actually has a clue about the problems we're facing. He's a good campaigner too. And MUCH more attractive than DeWine.

No, Harris received no business backing and raised very little. I don't understand why business would recruit him now.

at 7:34 PM, November 16, 2007 Anonymous Anonymous said...

The only interesting posts here are the ones bashing Jeffre - if he's such a loser, why do you spend some much time on him??

If you REALLY wan to beat Dewine, and that won't be easy, it is up to Cranley or Luken. If Luken could be coaxed, Dewine is dead.

They have the constituency that works in the County. Now, Pepper and Portune would even have a hard time.

at 6:21 PM, November 17, 2007 Anonymous Anonymous said...

Luken? Save him for Clerk of Courts or Probate Judge.

Dems need JOBS!

at 12:49 PM, November 18, 2007 Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yeah Luken would be a great choice. He could run on his sobriety and all the leadership he showed as Mayor. Go Luken!

at 5:36 PM, November 18, 2007 Anonymous Anonymous said...

Luken would have to overcome the riots.

But as I look at his record (convention center, Fountain Square, condos, even the Kroger Garage and police reform) he did some needed stuff. He got things done, even if he had a drink or two, or three.

By the way, NOBODY pounds 'em like Dewine. Scotch. Straight.

at 5:40 PM, November 18, 2007 Anonymous Anonymous said...

I like the Luken idea...Sam Luken.

at 6:18 PM, November 18, 2007 Anonymous Anonymous said...

I saw Luken last night at the Brazilian steakhouse. Looks 10 years younger, with hot woman, looking prosperous.

Yeah, he will give that up to run for Clerk of Courts!

at 7:48 PM, November 18, 2007 Anonymous Anonymous said...

What's the big deal? Dewine can be beaten by ANYBODY, eventho Todd and David have done all they can to revive his career.

Who will run against Todd? All of a sudden, he's vulnerable!

at 8:56 AM, November 19, 2007 Anonymous Anonymous said...

It's pretty sad that the Dem's would run Sam Luken because his daddy and grand daddy's famous last name. He should show his sincerity by helping candidates, volunteering, etc., if he doesn't weant to simply be regarded as someone who thinks he can be annointed.

at 5:19 PM, November 19, 2007 Anonymous Anonymous said...

I would love to see John Eby run for that seat. He should be on Council now but somehow the voters changed their minds in the polling booth. If John Eby were involved in any part of our local government we'd all be in better hands!

at 6:33 PM, November 19, 2007 Anonymous Anonymous said...

Luken's making too much money as a lobbyist and he couldn't stand to be the junior member to the current Dem "brain-trust".

Qualls is making her move to show what the "strong mayor" thing is really all about. The CBC guys love her as much as they hate Mallory.

Look for somebody to emerge from the townships to take on DeWine. Maybe even a well financed Repub. The rest of the county is fed up with City Council "graduates" bent on dragging them into the black hole.

at 8:33 AM, November 20, 2007 Anonymous Anonymous said...

I can't figure why any Republican would go against DeWine, unless at the behest of the Sheriff.

at 9:14 AM, November 20, 2007 Anonymous Anonymous said...

I like the dude who said Sam Luken should not run against PAT DEWINE because his only qualification is famous relatives.

Talk about a guy who ONLY made it because of his famous relative: PAT DEWINE.

He has shown no ability on his own. Whiny, ineffective, and divisive.

Somebody please step up!

at 10:07 AM, November 27, 2007 Anonymous Anonymous said...

Okay, I will! I will run against DeWine.
