Portune "frustrated" at divide with DeWine

Hamilton County Commissioner Todd Portune today reacted to the press conference Monday at which Commissioner Pat DeWine and other opponents of the jail tax voiced suggestions to "solve" the overcrowding problem.

Portune told the Enquirer's editorial board that he wishes DeWine would work with him and Commissioner David Pepper on the budget and jail overcrowding issue.

He's "frustrated" that the board continuest to be divided on how to fix the problem. But he blames DeWine. He says the Republican commissioner is blaming Pepper and Portune for not adopting his ideas, but his ideas aren't real solutions, Portune said.

"We're divided because what DeWine is suggesting either doesn't work or is against the law," Portune said. "Don't throw things out there that you know won't work and call them solutions."

Portune is so stupid. He wanted his tax change to change the law, but now to solve the problem with the solutions of DeWine he thinks there is no way to change laws.

Tell Leis to sell his hovercraft. That would help too.

I certainly hope Todd's political career is over after this term as Hamilton County Commissioner. Listen Todd, you are a very bitter man when it comes to being a team player. First, you blamed Heimlich for your mess and now, you blame DeWine.

Get over it. Let us get him out of office in 2009.

Based on last Tuesday's election results, it would appear DeWine is more aligned with the people than Portune-Pepper.

Thanks for voting down Issue 27!

Hope to thank you in person later.

"...it would appear DeWine is more aligned with the people than Portune-Pepper..."

That is why both commissioners received more votes for the position than pa, pa, pat ever has !

The voters will send all the wRong wingnut whackos down the river in chains, just like they did at the Ohio state level and recently at KY state level !

Since we are talking about alignment with the people, let's present the facts instead of the wRong wingnut whacko, elephant dung, propaganda:

Democrats hold 28 of 50 governorships, picked up two new legislatures to expand Democratic control to 56 of 98 chambers, and are poised to build on Congressional majorities and elect a Democratic president in 2008.

Well, Well, Well !

Looks like the majority has spoken !

HAD ENOUGH, VOTE DEMOCRAT 2008 !

DeWine has little credibility on county finance because he's not supported the other two on attempts to recoup stadium costs even though he agrees the lease and costs incurred are a drain. This needs to be addressed and until DeWine comes clean, he deserves NO credit! I look at it as a blind squirrel as I too did not vote for the jail tax.

By the way, the same goes for Si Leis as to his efforts in fighting what will be this 30 year debt note fact. Once this gets taken care of, this voter is willing to consider a new facility. Right now though I see this as the county being unable to fulfill it's obligation because they fulfilled what wasn't theirs eight years ago.

Dear "Criminals of Cincy", Unfortunately, you'll never have the opoortunity to thank me. I generally stay out of the ghetto.

Keep shooting each other ... the crime rate will eventually go down even more than it already has.

First, I think the vote against the tax represents more of a reflection of the economic instability of the community than against a jail, against criminal justice reforms, or against safety programs like OTR patrols, etc. Otherwise, it just doesn't make sense.

Second, DeWine's rule during his majority, created significant financial hardship for the county - best example was the firing of Krings with a huge payout by taxpayers - probably the most fiscally irresponsible conduct of an elected official I've ever seen.

Third, robbing Peter to pay Paul is probably the second most fiscally irresponsible recommendation an elected official can forward. This is like the county taking out a payday loan and hocking every community asset to do it. What a waste.

Reality check. The voters had to have known that voting down the tax would have certain effects - mostly, sending a clear message to the commissioners that, for whatever reason, they don't want to continue to house low level inmates in jail. That is a clear and unequivocal conclusion to the vote.

The commmissioners shouldn't now, turn to cutting every other program in order to thwart the voice of voters and pay to house them anyway.

Mr. DeWine claims that his fellow commissioners ignored the will of voters who rejected his jail plan along with Heimlich - now, DeWine is the pot calling the kettle black trumpeting ways to fund what the voters rejected -

All the commissioners need to get a grasp on this one fact - the public doesn't think petty criminals should locked up on the taxpayer's dime.

Let the Criminal Justice Commission do their job - review the inmates held, issue recommendations as to who doesn't and does require incarceration, who should be on house arrest or "the box", and get it over with.

We might find that we have a surplus of beds that we can rent out to the feds and other jurisdictions.

DeWine used to push the slogan "do less with more" now he's settled for just "doing less with less" - as long as there's "more" in his wallet he could care "less" about the MR/DD, programs for kids.

DeWine wants to use funding for programs to black children to keep them in school for funding keeping black men in jail.

If that isn't a prescription for recidivism, I don't know what is.

DeWine's suggestions are only guarantee that the problem gets worse for the next generation to pay for.

Where is the NAACP and supporters when COAST and DeWine are posing to cut programs to fund jail beds? What happened to their mantra that they will not support funding jail beds as they stand next to DeWine while he promotes cutting everything else to keep the black man in jail AT ALL COSTS.

Black Cincinnatians, where are your voices????

Let's see the NAACP (and COASt) circulate a petition to forbade the commissioners from funding jail beds until reforms have been completed.

Didn't DeWine and the COASTers claim that the county shouldn't fund jail beds until the courts fix the racial inequities, the criminalizing of mental illness and poverty, etc.?

Was that all a gimmick? Was it a racist ploy pandering to the black community? the homeless coalition? the mental health crowd?

Now, DeWine and friends are selling all that compassion for the sake of jailing their same supporters and sending them up the river.

Liars, hypocrits, racists, pigs

Anybody But DeWine. Thanks Pat for helping the GOP lose the county faster. Step down now and avoid the embarassement.

Well said Anon 1:30! Particularly your reflection that Issue 27's failure is, in part, a reflection of the economic instability reflected by the community.

However, I am afraid you might be giving the voters too much credit regarding the 'message' they were sending.

The only message I could discern was that the voters were too lazy to actually spend the effort educating themselves about the issues and candidates they voted on.

If it is in a commercial--it MUST be true!

Talk about robbing Peter to pay Paul, I'm just wondering if part of the tax increase was planned to fill the county coffers after having to shell out $11 million (taxpayer money) for a lawsuit.

Si needs to know it costs too much damm money to take the helicopter out every day or every other day to make sure it's ready for deployment. Take a good look at his office and see all the "perks" he has. Starting at the top, he's a good example of wasting taxpayer money.

Since the taxpayers know how to, and have to, budget their money in order to live, the County and City should enlist our help overseeing the expenditures. I'm sure they won't have to rob Peter to pay Paul anymore.

I believe 1:30 anon was correct: the swing vote that made the difference were the people like me who believe we are incarcerating people that could handled alternatively, just as effectively.

I haven't heard a sensible response to this position from all the pro-taxers.

Anyone?

They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Now that Pepper and Portune have tried to pass off some of Dewine's ideas as their own I guess Dewine should feel truly flattered.
Portune and Pepper shot down Pat's proposals earlier this year and are now have adopted most if not all of them. Monday they said they can't use the drug forfeiture money, now they're calling for the sheriff to turn it over. These are not honest people. They do not want to work toward a solution. They only want power. Thankfully the voters saw through their lies and scare tactics.

at 11:55 AM, November 15, 2007 Anonymous Anonymous said...

Uh, they said they didn't want to blow the forfeiture dollars on more jails, but on prevention instead. DeWine wanted to use it to keep the Butler County rip-off going.

At least Portune is showing leadership that will work. It's irresponsible to propose financing options that are against the law, or assume one of Ohio's most in-effective legislators (brinkman) can push it through. Go Todd! We need some rational leadership.

Please define "in-effective" for me. If you mean voting in favor of less tax burdon and smaller gov., I guess he could be guilty.
