The Western Economic Council (WEC) is supporting Issue 27.
The release: The Western Economic Council is a non-profit group formed in 1985 by citizens and business leaders from the west side of Hamilton County to promote preservation and quality development and redevelopment. Our overall purpose is to preserve the quality of life in our western Cincinnati neighborhoods.
WEC’s Board endorses the new County jail levy to be voted on in this November’s election and encourages all voters to vote in favor of Issue 27.
The reasons are simple: we need to support meaningful action to stem crime and reduce the “revolving door” that returns criminals to the streets. At present, we cannot even fund the inadequate number of jail cells the County has, let alone provide more jail space for criminals that the public should have protection from. Further, the current rehabilitation programs are inadequate to keep the wrong doers from returning to patterns of crime.
If the levy effort fails, we will face more crime, more criminals returned to the streets before they should be, and continuation of inadequate rehabilitation programs. All this leads inevitably to deterioration of our neighborhoods and property values as well as reduced public safety. A “yes” vote on Issue 27 represents our best current hope for breaking this trend. Please vote “yes” for Issue 27!

Well, it seems to me that just about every town/city/county in this great land of ours has some kind of 'Penny Tax' proposal pending.
Most places (0k, many places) want their extra penny or half-penny tax increase to use as a 'dedicated funding source' to attract matching federal government funds for transportation projects.
So what's the deal in Cinci? No need for matching federal transportation funds? Why can't you guys just float a bond or something if all you want to do is build a jail?
It's crazy that so many people in this area resort to fear mongering to get their message out. As a non-criminal, I think it's rediculous to pay huge amounts of money to house non violent offenders. Jails should be used to protect citizens from violent offenders who pose risk to society at large. This represents very few of the many people incarcerated. America incarcerates a higher percentage of 'criminals' than any other free country. Locally our sheriff rents out jail space to the Feds so we can house their prisoners at a financial loss. Our local laws are much tougher than other areas and in many cases require incarceration for minor offenses.
A good cheap way to stop the revolving door at our jail would be to offer hope outside jail and the criminal lifestyle. Why don't the local business leaders come together and realize that by denying jobs because of a criminal record they are in a sense pushing the offender back into a life of crime.
Raising the sales tax and throwing a lot of money at this problem will not make it go away. All it takes to see issue 27 is a bad idea is a little compassion and some basic common sense. Unfortunately, their will be those that continue to say "criminals vote no on issue 27". To those half wits I say see you on election day.
What wingnut????? Your answer to the jail overcrowding is for businesses to hire more convicted felons???? No wonder things are so screwed up! I hope the average citizen does not have your intellectual capacity or we will all be in a lot of trouble!!!!!
Federal Guidelines are the minimum requirements for all jails!
Any state, community can enact stricter guidelines if they so choose. Especially when the communities money is involved !
Portune is correct to change that for which he has the authority !
But hey, I think the community also offers drug rehabilatation !
Just a suggestion !
PATHETIC !
HAD ENOUGH, VOTE DEMOCRAT 2007 AND JEFFRE!
The net result, if this thing passes, will be more crime. Adding millions more for programs in Hamilton county will only make us more attractive to the social service agencies. We will attract criminals from all over the state. Build a jail, not a Mecca for all criminals, as we are currently a haven for sex offenders. We need a jail, we can not withstand any more social programs.
Let's simplify this for those who don't understand basic life prinicpals......if a person is convicted as a non violent, non deceptive felon, does their time and are released back into society without a hope of a decent job, they have virtually no chance of successfully reintegrating into society. If the only job a felon can find is in the dishroom, is that really a chance at a better future. Mind you I'm not advocating high paying executive positions be handed out. All I'm saying is that if you think a minimum wage position is gainful employment and a fair chance in todays world your crazy. It's equally crazy to deny that not having a fair shot at employment contributes greatly to recidivism. In a free society there will always be those that say lock up all the bad people and keep them away from my family. For those people I suggest they reach deep into there pockets and build the biggest baddest jail they can. Issue 27 gives them there chance for a new jail. I for one don't think throwing my hard earned money at a half baked idea like issue 27 is the best use of my tax dollars.
"Wingnut", You asked many reasonable questions but did you really expect answers from the proponents?
"Half wit", excellent answer? except where was the "convicted felons" in Wingnut's post?
If there are no sensible answers to reasonable questions, there's a problem.
