Charter endorses "yes" vote on CPS levy

In case you missed it -- it's not on their Web site yet -- the Charter Commitee last week endorsed Issue 22, the Cincinnati Public Schools tax levy.

The statement of support amounts to an endorsement with caveats, said President Michael Goldman.

With the schools endorsement, Charter is now officially in support of all four money issues on the ballot in the city of Cincinnati.

By the way, Charterites also endorsed CPS board incumbent Rick Williams for a third four-year term. Williams, whom Charter also endorsed in 1999 and 2003, is running against a slate of three newcomers, who were not endorsed. The top three finishers in a four-way race will win.

Wow! The Charter Committee supporting another tax hike! That hasn't happened since last week.

It shows how disorganized Charter is that they haven't even updated their web site yet. Or are they ashamed of their CPS levy endorsement?

Also, what the h*ll is behind endorsing Rick Williams? Charter is supposed to be "the good government people?" Endorsing Williams makes me question their credibility.

In other news, dog bites man.

Mr. Fischer: is it unreasonable to include in your post that Melanie Bates, current School Board member and Finance Chair, who was unaware of the $80MM deficit is also an endorsed Charter candidate for Cincinnati City Council?

Other than Charter's affinity for taxes, did anyone think they would oppose this increase as it would be a de facto indictment of their candidate's performance in her current position?

Williams (and Cranley, Cooper-Reed, and Bates) have been fighting to reform the administration. And surprise - the administration has been fighting back, with the help of Newell and Ingram and Gilligan's lack of involvement. The arguing and bickering? That's the old guard fighting reform.

Reelecting Williams combined with Blackwell and Newell leaving is going to go a long way to the kind of reform CPS needs - the majority want to talk with the public and find out what they want in public schools. And then get it done. Blackwell, on the other hand, has been too interested in protecting her turf and placing her cronies in high-paying jobs in the administration and at Mayerson.

Williams is STILL the candidate at reform. It's just that the minority, allied with the administration, have prevented any reform from moving forward. Williams listens to neighborhoods and responds. The Administration runs roughshod over communities and ignores them.

Williams has my vote because of what he's done so far and what he intends to do.
