Petro wants court, not Congress

The Associated Press reports:

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Former Ohio Attorney General Jim Petro, prominent among potential contenders for the U.S. House seat being vacated by Rep. Deborah Pryce next year, says he would prefer to lead the Ohio Supreme Court.

Petro, 58, the state’s top lawyer from 2002 to 2006, said he would need to rule out a position on the court before he would pursue Pryce’s seat.

“Certainly, if I don’t run for Congress, one of the reasons I would’ve made that decision is because I’m thinking of other opportunities, and the Supreme Court in 2010 would be one of them,” he said.

“I look down the road and think about courts,” said Petro, who lost the Republican gubernatorial nomination last year to then-Secretary of State Ken Blackwell.

Chief Justice Thomas Moyer, the longest-serving chief in the country, will be forced from the job in 2010 because he will be over the age limit of 70.

His departure will leave open the most coveted judicial post in the state, and already other justices are positioning themselves to run.

Justices Maureen O’Connor and Evelyn Lundberg Stratton, both up for re-election in 2008, have both been named as potential candidates. O’Connor said this week that she hasn’t ruled out a run for chief. Stratton, meanwhile, said a recent family illness has caused her to question whether she could mount two campaigns in two years.

Justice Paul Pfeifer, like O’Connor and Stratton a Republican, could also seek the top post. He is up for re-election in 2010. Some observers have suggested Pfeifer, a frequent and outspoken dissenter on the court, might even consider switching parties in a run for chief.

But Pfeifer said he has not advanced his own name for the job: “Folks tell me my name is mentioned, but it isn’t me promoting it.”

If a sitting member of the court becomes chief justice in 2010, Democratic Gov. Ted Strickland would appoint a justice to fill the vacancy that was created. All seven sitting justices are Republicans.

Petro, now a lawyer in private practice, said Thursday that he’s been approached by Republican leaders, including Rep. John Boehner of Ohio, about running to replace Pryce in the 15th District in central Ohio, one of the most competitive districts in the country. He said he would decide whether to get back into politics within two weeks.

Pryce, who faced the toughest race of her career in 2006, said Thursday she would not seek a ninth term.

Democrats are backing Mary Jo Kilroy, a Franklin County commissioner who narrowly lost to Pryce last year, to run for the open seat in 2008.

Glad to see another Repugnicant cut amd run from the mess they created in Washington. Saw Denny Has-been is also leaving. I wonder when Congressman Combover will wake up and smell the coffee or will Steve Driehaus have to serve up a nice warm cup of Get The Hell Out next November.

Jim, by 2010, there won't be a Republican Party with an endorsement worth seeking.

Petro, now a lawyer in private practice

...who works for Stan Chesley, the subject of the story that immediately follows about Chesley hosting the Hillary fundraiser.

Carl Weiser, did you know that detail and leave it out or did you just not know it?

Funny that Weiser forgot to mention Petro works for one of the country's biggest Democrat fundraisers. Petro even attended Chesley's last fundraiser for Hillary this spring.

to the last 2 anons, bipartisan law firms are hardly newsworthy. do you know who Paul Tibbs and Neil Clark are? if not, you both need to do your homework before you criticize a newspaper reporter.

It shouldn't matter what Petro wants - the people have said THEY don't want him. Stay in private practice and do a little work judged by a jury of your peers - then, we'll see if you belong in public life.

Also, could it be that Petro wants a seat on the bench so he can pull cover for Republican buddies who may face charges as the new administratioin (I don't care if they're Republicans or Democrats) clean office,

And, it dawned on me, how can Petro run for any office when he helped cover up the perjury of Heimlich regarding knowledge of the Mike Allen affair and nepotism? Instead of filing charges against Heimlich, he politely invited his running mate back to the deposition table and allowing him to change his testimony.
Petro is just what Ohio needs on the bench -- 10 years ago.

anon 5:49, thanks for posting. Are the depositions public record? If so, would welcome dates or any other tracking info.

rAnon 5:49, I must have missed the law that says if you lose one race, you should never run for anything again. Why don't you mention that to your left-wing heroes Ted Strickland and Sherrod Brown, or David Pepper or John Cranley.

"It shouldn't matter what Petro wants - the people have said THEY don't want him."

This, quite possibly, might be the all-time worst piece of political analysis, not written in bold-italic type, in the history of this blog.

You think people who lose an election shouldn't run for office again because "the people have said THEY don't want him"?

Who did you vote for in the Governor's race? Blackwell? Sorry, he lost to Charlie Luken for Congress in 1990. Strickland? Sorry, he lost races for Congress in 1974, 1980, and 1984 before winning in 1992. He then lost in 1994 before winning again in 1996 and since. Bob Fitrakis? Dude has lost numerous races in the Columbus area.

How about U.S. Senator. Mike DeWine? Nope. He lost a Senate race in 1992. Sherrod Brown? I guess the voters told him to STFU in 1990 when he lost to that monster of Ohio power politics, Bob Taft. Sherrod didn't listen, he came back and won a Congressional race in 1992 and every other year since.

Congress? Well, I don't know where you live, but you would have had a hard time voting for Chabot (lost 2 council races and an attempt at Congress) or Cranley (lost against Chabot in 2000). The 2nd CD would be equally problematic for you: Schmidt lost a race for state senate in 2004 and Wulsin lost the Dem primary to Hackett in 2005. Perhaps you live in the 3rd or 8th and could vote for the Dem sacrificial lamb in good conscience as Turner lost a Mayor's race in 2001 and Boehner lost several runs for GOP leadership positions in Congress. Problem is, since "the people said THEY don't want him" (and I guess you would apply this to female candidates, too?) you can't ever support them again, by your logic.

Back to the state level: you must have left Treasurer of State devoid of your vote in addition to the above races: Cordray lost a race for Attorney General in 1998 or 2002 and Sandy O'Brien lost a race for state rep in 2000.

For Auditor of State, you must have voted for Mary Taylor, as Barbara Sykes lost a Treasurer's race in 1994 to Ken Blackwell.

At least you had a real choice in the Sec of State's race and the AG's race, as Hartmann and Brunner, Montgomery and Dann all brought undefeated records to the table in November 2006.
