Qualls Keeps Tarbell Help

Some, knowing Vice Mayor Jim Tarbell, said they thought among his concerns about leaving City Council would be the future of his two aides, Ron Wahl and Norma Walker.

Well, Walker planned to retire, but now will be sticking around to help run Roxanne Qualls' campaign. She figures the travel she'd planned will wait until after November. They're still working on finding an office, but were happy to say they got the required 500 signatures in four days after Qualls was announced last week as Tarbell's replacement.

Walker worked for years for former judge Ann Marie Tracey. She insists her new boss-to-be doesn't intend to run for mayor, despite the fact that Qualls recently registered the domain name quallsformayor.com. She said Qualls only did so to prevent mischief-makers from snagging that on the Web and doing God knows what with it.

Wahl will continue working in the office after Tarbell leaves Sept. 3. He's also Qualls' campaign treasurer.

So, right there in City Hall, the taxpayers will pay the salaries of her campaign manager and campaign treasurer? I am sure they will never, ever, ever, do anything related to campaigning while on taxpayer time, even though they share the same office, right?

And to think, this is Charter, the "good government" people.

What a disappointment.

I'm sorry. Where in that article did it say Wahl and Walker were going to be working in Qualls' council office? I read they will be working for her campaign. The headline was awkwardly worded, but I didn't read anything about them being paid by the taxpayers.

Norma retires from City Hall on August 31 and will then work exclusively for the campaign. I will continue on as Roxanne Qualls's Council Assistant and will remain on the City payroll. I was her assistant at City Hall from 1991 to 1999 before working for Jim Tarbell for eight years. I was her campaign treasurer from 1987 through 1997. There's no reason why I can't do both as long as I do both well.

And Ron Wahl's one of the most ethical people on the third floor at City Hall, so I doubt he'd do campaign work on city time or property.

The original anon is dead wrong.

Ron Wahl never does campaign work in City Hall.

that's because he's hardly ever there during campaign season.

and it is totally unfair to Ron to single him out. council aides are scarce to find on the third floor in September and October of odd-numbered years.

what's even rarer are their vacation request forms.

As a past volunteer I've seen first hand that Ron and Norma keep campaign business and city business TOTALLY SEPARATE. No conflict. The other council member's aides also double as campaign workers for their bosses as well. Their duties consist of maintaining the Councilmember's schedule, endless data base updating not to mention the huge bulk of mail. A Councilmember Aide does not influence public policy whatsever. God knows the council aide's paychecks don't match the countless hours they put in..especially during campaign season. You won't find two people on the city's payroll more ethical than Ron Wahl and Norma Walker.
