A YouTube Commercial Against The Jail Tax

You might recognize the theme song from CSI: Miami in this anti-jail tax ad from COAST, the key words courtesy of The Who in 1971: "We don't get fooled again."

The ad says commissioners David Pepper and Todd Portune chose to ignore the voters' defeat last fall of the prior tax and enacted one anyway. It points out that the lone Republican on the commission, Pat DeWine, thinks that's wrong.

It urges you to join the fight via WeDemandAVote.com and PatDeWine.com.

Tip your hat to the new constitution and see the ad here.

And in case you ever find yourself in a heated game of conservative rock trivia:

The song topped a National Review list last year of the top 50 conservative rock songs of all time. Here's why, according to John J. Miller, who helped compile the list: "The conservative movement is full of disillusioned revolutionaries; this could be their theme song, an oath that swears off naïve idealism once and for all. “There’s nothing in the streets / Looks any different to me / And the slogans are replaced, by-the-bye. . . . Meet the new boss / Same as the old boss.” The instantly recognizable synthesizer intro, Pete Townshend’s ringing guitar, Keith Moon’s pounding drums, and Roger Daltrey’s wailing vocals make this one of the most explosive rock anthems ever recorded — the best number by a big band, and a classic for conservatives."

Nice song - but the people being fooled are those who don't realize it doesn't matter if you have a jail and don't have the money to run it and if you don't have the programs to address the mental health problems, addictions and no job placement - then you have a choice - build all the jails you want without the guards- its just public housing or (even if you build it and fill it) you'll just keep spending more and more every few years for another jail.

We need to solve this problem.

As for COAST, I won't be fooled again - they're part of the Heimlich Pit Crew and the pit they dug for us got us right where we are now and just keeps gettin' us deeper and deeper into sh%#.

Meet the new boss, same as the old boss... if we wanted the likes of Heimlich running this county he'd still be in office - we voted Heimlich, his Pit Crew of Pit falls and Finney the Fink out of town and we won't be fooled AGAIN!!!

The NAACP is the leader and the ones doing the real work. Too bad the Democrats are calling them right wing tools. The unDemocrats are the right wing tools.

Oh good grief! We've got a glut of joke social programs & help in this city. Those who run them belly up to the speaker's table at City Hall every December during the budget hearings begging & threatening for more & more money.

We also pay for the Court Clinic, Central Psych, UC Hospital, Talbert House & everyone else who has beds & Methadone available.

I'm sick of shelling out for these Million Dollar criminal freeloaders. Over a lifetime, that's basically what each & every one of them are costing the taxpayers. A Million Dollars. You'd never get them to get off their duffs to work that sort of money off.

The NAACP are not right wing tools--they're being used by the right wing to do their bidding, and to help Smitherman's Council campaign. A lot of long-time NAACP people are disgusted by what's happening to this organization.

The NAACP believes that the people deserve to vote on this issue. COAST believes that the people deserve to vote on this issue. What is so hard to understand about that?

It looks like some of our radical white left wingers would prefer to elect fire-breathing extremists who refuse to work with anyone to get things done. I'm glad to see COAST and the NAACP working together to defeat The White Democratic Sales Tax Hike.

To help Smitherman's council campaign? Are you kidding? Mr. I Hate Whitey has no chance of getting elected to Council.

That's why he's trying to get this on the ballot, so he can help drive up turnout for his own election. Say goodbye to Monzel.

And he'll be toast because Pat DeWine, George Vincent and Tom Brinkman aren't smart enough to figure out that the entire petition drive by Smitherman is a way to get himself back on City Council. Duh.

Or, they just don't care.
