Strickland first Ohio gov to speak to Muslim dinner

Gov. Ted Strickland spoke at Ohio's 10th annual banquet of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) Sunday night.

Jennifer Nimer, the Ohio chapter's legal counsel, said it was the first time an Ohio governor spoke at the annual dinner. About 350 people attended.

"On behalf of all Ohioans, (my wife and I) appreciate your vision to promote justice and mutual understanding. We gather under CAIR-Ohio's theme this year, ‘American Muslims: Connecting and Sharing,’ to do just that, to connect and share and get to know each other better," Strickland said, according to the national organization's daily news brief.

Strickland also expressed appreciation for "the Muslim traditions of strong family, hard work, and education," and presented a proclamation honoring CAIR-Ohio’s work.

CAIR Chairman Dr. Parvez Ahmed and several imams also spoke.

"Our speakers were truly inspirational and left the audience with a renewed sense of commitment and motivation," CAIR-Ohio President Dr. Asma Mobin-Uddin said in a prepared statement.

CAIR is America's largest Islamic civil liberties group. It has 33 offices and chapters in the United States and Canada including Ohio chapters in Cincinnati, Columbus and Cleveland.

Update: Strickland spokesman Keith Dailey said the governor also read this Jan. 6, 1941, State of the Union quote from Franklin Delano Roosevelt as part of his informal remarks: "We look forward to a world founded upon four essential human freedoms. The first is freedom of speech and expression - everywhere in the world. The second is freedom of every person to worship God in his own way - everywhere in the world. The third is freedom from want - everywhere in the world. The fourth is freedom from fear - everywhere in the world."

I'm sure Teddy brought up the federal probe of CAIRS support of the murdering Hammas, and the 90% decline in CAIR membership since 9/11, but a remarkable spike in their cash flow. Mike Moore should drag his cameras out on this bunch.

Is there a journalist in this state who will ask the governor why he took the time to honor an organization with ties to terrorist organizations?

Matt, no there isn't. They are still coming to grips with the fact that they "had to" report some bad news last week on Strickland re: the tape theft and Frankie Coleman. They'll use last week's stories to pat themselves on the back saying, "see, we go after Democrats, too."

The executive branch of our state is honoring and appreciating those that would see Sharia law placed in our community, the jihadist message given credence and have the Ohioan women covered from head to toe.

Where is the news? What is going on? If the gov does not know who CAIR is, somebody please tell him.

Once again, our bold idiot tries to make this about someone it is not.

The fact is that Ted Strickland spoke before a hate group with known ties to terrorists. Either he supports their goals or he is too stupid to know what they really stand for.

Either way, this is the news, not Joe Deters.

Jon Craig reported two inaccuracies; firstly, CAIR is not the largest “Islamic civil liberties group in America.” CAIR’s membership gain and retention in the last two years saw a loss of 65 percent, due in large part to the small segment of the media that is accurately reporting about CAIRs involvement with known terrorist organizations. Muslins are distancing themselves from CAIR quickly.

Lastly, CAIR is not what anyone in the US would call a “civil liberties group.” If they were than they would be actively calling attention to the genocide of Iraqi Christians at the hand of the cut throat Islamic terrorist. Generally civil libertarians know no boundaries when it comes to repression. What they are in fact is a bulling group that goes around the US suppressing truth and freedom of speech. And here is a tip for you Mr Craig, when a group calls themselves a civil liberty group, ask them if they support the US Constitution; that is always the best litmus test. In the case of CAIR they care little about the US Constitution, rather care about the imposition of Shari Law through out the Christian world.

Islamic Groups Named in Hamas Funding Case
BY JOSH GERSTEIN - Staff Reporter of the Sun

Federal prosecutors have named three prominent Islamic organizations in America as participants in an alleged criminal conspiracy to support a Palestinian Arab terrorist group, Hamas.

Prosecutors applied the label of "unindicted co-conspirator" to the Council on American-Islamic Relations, the Islamic Society of North America, and the North American Islamic Trust in connection with a trial planned in Texas next month for five officials of a defunct charity, the Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development.

This is certainly about a wrong wingnut whacko group attempting to sling cheap elephant dung propaganda, PERIOD !

You cannot sit idle and feed the "culture of corruption" and then claim you have enlightenment !

There is no evidence that this is a terrorist group !

If it is, then why hasn't the wRong wingnut whacko regime shut it down ?

No, you won't address that: NOW WILL YOU ?

Oh, your wRong wingnut whacko administration can fire federal attorney's because they reveal the 'culture of corruption', but, the wRong wingnut whacko administration can't shut down your cheap accusations of a terrorist group acting Right here in the heartland !

Why isn't the wRong wingnut whacko administration protecting us ?

They certainly know how to wiretap and spy on the political opposition !

Mr. Ted,Boys and Girls,
Here is a little peice on CAIR in our US house of reps;

"CAIR's Congressman"

Ellison attended the University of Minnesota, along with future CAIR heads Nihad Awad and Ibrahim Hooper, just prior to Awad and Hooper taking leadership positions with the Minnesota-based Bosnian Relief Committee. (Joe Kaufman, FrontPage Magazine, 'A Night of Hamas Heroes,' March 8, 2004) While at the university, Ellison became involved with the Nation of Islam (NOI), the organization led by notorious anti-Semite Louis Farrakhan. He kept this involvement in NOI for a period of ten years, participating in rallies, including the Million Man March hate fest; defending hate speech; and using such aliases as Keith Hakim, Keith X Ellison and Keith Ellison-Muhammad. (Scott Johnson, Power Line, 'KEITH ELLISON FOR DUMMIES,' September 30, 2006)

Amidst Ellison's run for Minnesota's 5th District Congressional seat, in 2006, he accepted tens of thousands of dollars in campaign contributions raised during CAIR-sponsored events, including secret CAIR fundraisers held out of state in Florida. As well, he accepted thousands of dollars in contributions from CAIR leaders themselves, including contributions from CAIR's Executive Director Nihad Awad (Nehad Hammad) and CAIR's Chairman Parvez Ahmed. (Federal Election Commission, 'Individuals Who Gave To: ELLISON, KEITH MAURICE,' November 2006 Congressional election)

In November of 2006, Ellison spoke at a conference for the North American Imams Federation (NAIF), a.k.a. Flying Imam Conference. In the program for the event, Ellison's photo is pictured alongside 'unindicted co-conspirator' of the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center, Siraj Wahhaj, and Al-Qaeda web designer and Hamas supporter, Mazen Mokhtar. (North American Imams Federation, The Fourth Annual Body Meeting, November 18-20, 2006, 'Towards Improving Imams' Professionalism and Community Outreach') While this conference was taking place, Ellison addressed a CAIR banquet in Arlington, Virginia via video. (CAIR press release, 'First Muslim Congressman Addresses CAIR Banquet,' November 20, 2006)

In December of 2006, Ellison was the keynote speaker at the Muslim American Society (MAS) and Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA) annual convention, 'Muslim Americans for Revival and Reform.' (Niraj Warikoo, Detroit Free Press, '1st Muslim congressman thrills crowd in Dearborn, December 25, 2006) Also speaking at the event were Mazen Mokhtar (see above) and Raeed Tayeh, a former representative of the Islamic Association for Palestine (IAP), who was fired from his job as a speechwriter for then-United States Representative Cynthia McKinney for referring to the United States Congress as 'Israeli-occupied territory.' (Evan Gahr, Jewish World Review, 'Cynthia McKinney's Final Solution?' November 30, 2001)

In May of 2007, Ellison was the keynote speaker at the 4th Annual Convention of MAS-Minnesota. (website of MAS-Minnesota, ‘4th Annual MAS Minnesota Convention,’ May 24, 2007) While he spoke, MAS-Minnesota’s website contained an inordinate amount of material discussing the murdering of Jews, the denigration of Christians, and the waging of war against non-Muslims. (Joe Kaufman, FrontPage Magazine, “Keith Ellison’s Dangerous Liaisons,” June 1, 2007)

In June of 2007, Ellison was a featured speaker at the First Annual Banquet of CAIR-Minnesota. (website of CAIR National office , ‘CAIR-Minnesota to Hold First Annual Banquet, June 11, 2007)This, after CAIR had just been named an “unindicted co-conspirator” in a Hamas financing case put forward by the United States government. (United States of America vs. Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development, In the United States District Court for the Northern District of Texas, May 29, 2007)

Is there a reason that the Enquirer is not printing this article? I know it looks bad on their boy Ted, but they printed a story a few weeks ago that he's refusing to accept Iraqi refugees (largely Muslim) in the state. Obviously printed to embarass our President, but not the good governor's kiss and make up dinner?

Bold face guy. Once again you change the subject and bring out your usual B.S. Would love for you to stay on point with what the article and thread is about. However it is easy to see what you do when you don't like what you read, or a person you support screws up, says something stupid, or in this case speaks at something he should not. You change the subject and give us your usual boring garbage. Pretty lame if you ask me.

Strickland should not be speaking to a group like this that has many, many questionable ties. That is the bottom line here.

At 12:17 pm on February 26, 1993, a 1,500lb urea-nitrate fuel-oil bomb hidden inside a rental van caused a massive explosion that ripped through the parking garage of the World Trade Center, killing six people and injuring another 1,042 – the first large-scale terrorist attack on U.S. soil by Islamic extremists. The terrorists had intended to topple one of the buildings onto the other, potentially killing tens of thousands of innocent Americans. Sadly, the fourteenth anniversary of that event passed last week with very little discussion by major media outlets, even though that lethal attack by Islamic terrorists ominously foreshadowed the unspeakable horror of 9/11.

At 8:00 pm on June 6, 2006, the Ohio affiliate of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-OH) honored one of the unindicted conspirators in that 1993 World Trade Center bombing, Siraj Wahhaj, a Brooklyn, NY imam that had also served as a defense witness at the trial of one of the men convicted for that terrorist attack, the “Blind Sheikh” Omar Abdel-Rahman (a conviction that CAIR has labeled “a travesty of justice”). More than 400 CAIR-OH supporters gathered at this fundraising banquet.

Of course, Siraj Wahhaj’s ties to the 1993 World Trade Center terrorist attack may not have been known to the hundreds of CAIR supporters who were in attendance that evening, but they were certainly known to CAIR. On repeated occasions, CAIR officials on the state and national level have not only risen to the defense of Wahhaj, but they have gone to great lengths to embrace the unindicted terror co-conspirator and involve him in the inner workings of the organization, such as having him serve on their Advisory Board. CAIR National spokesman, Ibrahim Hooper, has gone so far as to call Wahhaj “one of the most respected Muslim leaders in America.” Curiously, that article by Hooper praising Wahhaj has disappeared from CAIR’s website.

A little over a year later, addressing an audience of New Jersey Muslims, the same Wahaj articulated a rather different vision from his mild and moderate invocation in the House. If only Muslims were more clever politically, he told his New Jersey listeners, they could take over the United States and replace its constitutional government with a caliphate. "If we were united and strong, we'd elect our own emir [leader] and give allegiance to him. . . . [T]ake my word, if 6-8 million Muslims unite in America, the country will come to us." In 1995, Wahaj served as a character witness for Omar Abdel Rahman in the trial that found that blind sheikh guilty of conspiracy to overthrow the government of the United States. More alarming still, the U.S. attorney for New York listed Wahaj as one of the "unindicted persons who may be alleged as co-conspirators" in the sheikh's case.

One of them, Siraj Wahaj, appeared as a defense witness in their trial. In a recorded speech at a mosque, Mr. Wahaj declared that "one of the most diabolical plots ever in the annals of history, in my estimation, has been the war in the Persian Gulf. It was a plan, and believe me, it is a part of a larger plan, to destroy the greatest challenge to the Western world, and that's Islam. I see the demise of the Soviet Union as a sign for the American people that what happened in the Soviet Union will definitely happen in America unless America changes its course from the new world order and accepts the Islamic agenda."

But he also praises Sheik Omar Abdel-Rahman, the blind Egyptian cleric who visited the imam's mosque several years before he was was convicted in 1995 of conspiring to bomb New York City landmarks. While decrying the events of Sept. 11, the imam takes great pains to remain neutral about Osama bin Laden. He says the al Qaeda leader's videotaped boasting about the attacks may have been a media ruse: "I'm just not so sure I want to be one of the ones who say, 'Yeah, he did it. He's a horrible man.' "

He has told his followers that a society governed by strict Islamic law, in which adulterers would be stoned to death and thieves would have their hands cut off, would be superior to American democracy. Speaking of unnamed forces in the U.S. government and media, he has preached, "These people want the destruction of Islam."

CAIR consistently defends other militant Islamic terrorists too. The conviction of the perpetrators of the 1993 World Trade Center bombing it deemed "a travesty of justice." The conviction of Omar Abdel Rahman, the blind sheikh who planned to blow up New York City landmarks, it called a "hate crime." The extradition order for suspected Hamas terrorist Mousa Abu Marook it labeled "anti-Islamic" and "anti-American."

Not surprisingly, CAIR also backs those who finance terrorism. When President Bush closed the Holy Land Foundation in December for collecting money he said was "used to support the Hamas terror organization," CAIR decried his action as "unjust" and "disturbing."

Others, in a position to know, such as Senator Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) stated that CAIR is “unusual in its extreme rhetoric and its associations with groups that are suspect.” Senator Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) describes CAIR as an organization “which we know has ties to terrorism,” and Steven Pomerantz, Sr., the FBI’s former chief of counterterrorism, notes that “CAIR, its leaders, and its activities effectively give aid to international terrorist groups.”

Boxer’s office confirmed to NEWSWEEK that she has withdrawn a “certificate of accomplishment” to Sacramento activist Basim Elkarra after learning that he serves as an official with the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR). After directing her staff to look into CAIR, Boxer “expressed concern” about some past statements and actions by the group, as well as assertions by some law enforcement officials that it “gives aid to international terrorist groups,” according to Natalie Ravitz, the senator’s press spokeswoman.
But a handful of individuals who have had ties to CAIR in the past have been convicted or deported for financial dealings with Hamas—another reason cited by Boxer for her action. The senator directed her staff to withdraw the certificate—which she routinely gives to community leaders in California—and asked that a statement she had previously made endorsing CAIR be stricken from the group’s Web site, Ravitz said in an e-mail.
But Boxer stands by her decision to withdraw the award and to distance herself from CAIR, saying she was influenced by previous critical statements about CAIR made by her Democratic colleagues Sens. Richard Durbin of Illinois and Charles Schumer of New York. "To praise an organization because they haven't been indicted is like somebody saying, 'I'm not a crook,'” Boxer says. “I'm going to take a lot of hits for this. But I'm just doing what I think is right."

CAIR Executive Director Nihad Awad At a 1994 meeting at Barry University, Nihad Awad stated succinctly, “I am a supporter of the Hamas movement.” Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper has defended Saudi Arabia’s financial aid to families of Palestinian suicide bombers.

Awad wrote in the Muslim World Monitor that the 1994 trial which resulted in the conviction of four Islamic terrorists who had perpetrated the previous year's World Trade Center bombing was “a travesty of justice.” Notwithstanding the confessions of the terrorists, Awad said: "There is ample evidence indicating that both the Mossad [Israel’s intelligence agency] and the Egyptian Intelligence played a role in the explosion."

In a 1994 interview with newsman Mike Wallace, Awad was asked if he supported the “military undertakings of Hamas,” to which he replied: “The United Nations Charter grants people who are under occupation [the right] to defend themselves against illegal occupation.”

CAIR was founded in 1994 by two former officials of the Islamic Association for Palestine, a group that former FBI counter terrorism chief Oliver Revell acknowledged was formed as a front for the Palestinian Arab terrorist group, Hamas. One of CAIR's official founders and its executive director, Nihad Awad, openly expressed support for Hamas, Hizbullah, and numerous other Arab/Islamic terrorist organizations.

Mr. Hooper has defended Saudi financial support of Palestinian suicide bombers. In spite of this, much of America's present political establishment embraces CAIR as a legitimate, mainstream, Muslim-American organization.

Membership in the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) has declined more than 90 percent since the 2001 terrorist attacks, Audrey Hudson will report in Tuesday's editions of The Washington Times.
According to tax documents obtained by The Times, the number of reported members spiraled down from more than 29,000 in 2000 to less than 1,700 in 2006, a loss of membership that caused the Muslim rights group's annual income from dues to drop from $732,765 in 2000, when yearly dues cost $25, to $58,750 last year, when the group charged $35.
The organization instead is relying on about two dozen individual donors a year to contribute the majority of the money for CAIR's budget, which reached nearly $3 million last year.
