Strickland accuses Bush of "breach of faith"

Gov. Strickland today sent this letter to President Bush

Dear President Bush:

I write to you today in concern for the continued and unprecedented sacrifice our men and women in the Ohio National Guard bear in relation to the ongoing conflict in Iraq, Afghanistan, and elsewhere.

Yesterday, the Department of Defense announced an alert order for the possible deployment of additional replacement units in support of the war in Iraq. Four National Guard brigade combat teams, including the 37th Infantry Brigade Combat Team from Ohio, could be deployed as soon as December 2007.

As you are aware, the 37th Infantry Brigade Combat Team was originally in line for possible mobilization in 2009. The timeframe has been moved up dramatically. This is a significant departure from the commitment made to Ohio soldiers and their families, and I believe it is a breach of faith.

While this alert purportedly is not associated to the current “surge,” I remain troubled by the significant burden Ohioans continue to shoulder during the recent conflicts, with over 9,000 Ohio soldiers deployed since 9 / 11.

The brave men and women who serve in the Ohio National Guard are putting their lives on the line. I am asking for your assurance that prior to deployment, every
Ohio soldier has the most up-to-date equipment, including individual body armor systems, M-4 rifles and other weapons systems, night vision devices, and up-armored type wheeled vehicles. I am also asking for your assurance that every Ohio soldier has appropriate training.

Our soldiers and their families deserve nothing less. On behalf of the men and women in the Ohio National Guard, I look forward to your response and assurances.

Sincerely,

Ted Strickland
Governor, State of Ohio

cc: Defense Secretary Robert Gates

I am so glad to see Ted Strickland keeping his campaign promises.

I remember how he promised to keep Iraqi refugees out of Ohio.

He vowed to eliminate charter schools at numerous campaign appearances.

He also promised to send letters of protest to the White House every time there was a callup of the national Guard.

Way to keep your promises, Ted!

You also forgot his promise to appoint openly gay individuals to state offices and to end the death penalty in Ohio.

Go Ted GO!!!!
If the commander and cheif won't protect our armed forces - then, Governor Strickland will do it for them.

We would like to see the statistics on Ohio Guard deployment based on population compared against the contribution from other states !

It would appear that these are reverse "ROVE" hiring techniques ?

"Rove" and his "state street" boys will not hire anyone unless they are the same wRong wingnut whacko political hacks, and, Now, our state seems to be punished for electing an opposition party, NON-wRong wingnut whacko, governor !

I FULLY AGREE! If Ted thinks that "every Ohio National Guard soldier deserves the most up-to-date equipment, including individual body armor systems, M-4 rifles and other weapons systems, night vision devices, and up-armored type wheeled vehicles. I am also asking for your assurance that every Ohio soldier has appropriate training." WHAT IS HE? CRAZY!!! Who does he think these soldiers are? Barb and Jenna?

Besides, Rummy said "You go to war with the army YOU HAVE. Not the Army you WISH YOU HAD!"

Leave it to the Furher, er...... I mean George W. Bush. He knows best!

Hey anony 4.21,
West Virginia sends more fighting personel to the military than any other state.
Teddy, a brigade has about 2200 personel and about a third of them are in support rolls that would never fire a weapon unless they were being over-run by insurgents that over-ran the front liners that were afraid to fire there weapons for fear of being court-marshiald and sent to prison for 20yrs for breaking John Murtha, Nancy P.etal rules of engagement

What we have here is a simple difference of opinion:

Democrats want an Iraq exit strategy.

Republicans don't.

I know who's got my vote next election.

Several weeks ago, I attended one of our Congresswoman's community meetings in Blue Ash. During that meeting, she explained to the people in attendance that she might be willing to change her position on the war in Iraq. Then she came to Pike County and said the exact opposite thing to the group of people in attendance at that meeting.

I publcly challenged Jean Schmidt to keep her promise and to change her position on the war in Iraq. I even explained that I would immediately remove my name from any potential candidacy in the 2008 Ohio 2nd Congressional campaign if she was willing to keep her promise. She has ignored my offer.

It is time for me to start talking with groups of people throughout the Ohio 2nd about HEALTHCARE, the ECONOMY and the WAR in Iraq. I am on a mission to SAVE MEDICARE, EXPAND the ECONOMY, and END the WAR.

Tes Strickland is a man who keeps his promises. So am I...

Something learned from Katrina is that 50% of National Guard from each state can go to war. The remainder stays. Rumsfeld said it best 'We go to war with what we have, etc. So moving up the date to send a guard unit overseas is lawful.
