Dems getting closer to having a council slate

The Charter Committee and the Republican party has had their slate of endorsed city council candidates in place for some time now, but the Democratic Party has lagged behind.

Tuesday night, they started to catch up a bit.

A candidate screening committee set up by the Cincinnati Democratic Committee (CDC) -- a group made up of precinct executives from around the city -- has recommended a slate of nine council candidates for the CDC to consider when it meets next week, probably on Thursday night.

The slate will have to be approved by the full CDC, and there could be a dust-up over the screening committee's recommendation that Councilman Jeff Berding be endorsed for a second term, mainly because many in the party have sore heads over the fact that Berding is one of the ringleaders of the "fiscal five,'' a council majority made up of Democrats, Republicans and a Charterite that has pushed for spending cuts.

But Berding was recommended for endorsement by the screening committee, although co-chair Aryeh Alex would not say how the committee voted.

Four other incumbents -- David Crowley, John Cranley, Laketa Cole, and Cecil Thomas -- were also recommended.

The four non-incumbents are an interesting bunch:

- former council member and vice mayor Minette Cooper, making a comeback after sitting out for four years (as required by the city's term limits law);

- former Cincinnati police officer and local NAACP president Wendell Young, who ran unsuccessfully for council two years ago;

- Greg Harris, a former 1st Congressional District candidate;

- and Brian Garry, a community activist who ran as an independent candidate four years ago.

The time and place of the CDC meeting has yet to be set. Stay tuned.

The Dem's are endorsing a pro-boycott activist in Brian Garry. He was a fixture at protests, and used his public access show to air the views of anti-city, anti-police activists. His yard sign two years ago stressed his anti-establishment views, replete with a picture of him taking a black power fist in the air stance.

Strange how the Dem's deem controversial a candidate who is pro-business (Berding), but have no problem endorsing a candidate who wants to boycott Cincinnati business.

It's time the party look forward and endorse candidates who can be progressive AND business-friendly. It's actually possible (Clinton, etc.). But the Dem's need to stop putting up folks like Garry, Lynch, etc. We aren't going to create a better future for Cincinati through bashing business and electing boycott leaders.

No, the local Dems need to stop endorsing people who are "Democrat In Name Only," like Berding.

Berding campaigns for Republicans Bedinghaus and Eby, shuts his fellow Dems on council out of important decisions by working with Republicans, throws parties for GOP big-wigs and does whatever the business community tells him to do -- all while skirting the Sunshine Law on open meetings.

It's time for the party to dump this thin-skinned, no integrity loser.

As a lifelong Dem, I find the list disappointing. I will not vote for Berding, and recall Minette Cooper as rather flakey. I agree that Dems should be able to field more pro-Cincinnati candidates. The Repub candidates are even flakier - Malone and Winburn. Charter candidate Melanie Bates looks better all the time.

I thought John Cranley quit his work on Council to run for Congress.

Garry has always been vocal about his views. His passion was not always directed in what I consider the correct way. However, he is candidate that I know will never skirt an issue, never make a back room deal and never go against his core beliefs. Knowing I can trust a politician to represent what he campaigns for is something rare. Council needs to be well rounded, as do the Cincy Dems. Garry is more solution oriented and corporative this time around. I think we will all be surprised by Garry this year. I can't wait to see what he brings to the table.

Garry has great ideas and truly cares about Cincinnati, and has matured considerably- we need a voice like his that speaks for citizens who don't have a voice or a fat bankroll.

Anon 10:34- on what planet is (Hillary) Clinton a progressive? Or are you referring to Bill?

So we should dismiss Garry's pro-boycott, anti-police rheotic from his campaign four years ago as youthful indiscretion? He was only 37 years old then. I'm so glad he has "matured considerably" over the past four years.

As for Bates, she'd been running for office the past 10 years. She'd already run for Council and lost. (The Enquirer failed ot mention this in its front-page puff piece about her.) The difference this time is her personal tragedy, but let's not pretend for a minute that this is her motive to run for office.

The problem Democrats have with Jeff Berding is not "spending cuts" but that he is PHONEY BALONEY. He lies and the double-crosses and makes false deals.

Berding is about as fiscally responsible as a Paul Brown stadium cost overrun.

Garry is a nice guy but his politics are purely for the soapbox. He has no experience and no desire to actually do what is best for the city and it is embarrasing that the Democrats would put his name on the ticket. He doesn't realize that once the politics are over, it becomes about policy and results.

But is this the real Dem ticket? Notice that the organization quoted was the CDC NOT the HCDP. The CDC is a thown together group that has no pull and even less money. Heck, look at who their spokesman in the article was...
