New sales tax plan introduced

Hamilton County commissioners Todd Portune and David Pepper today introduced a new "Comprehensive Safety, Corrections and Criminal Justice System Reform Plan" that will seek a 15-year sales tax increase to build a new jail and fund a slew of additional programs including more cops on the streets and a juvenile crime-reduction program that specifically involves behavior related to lead poisoning and/or poor health.

They have not decided whether to go to voters in August or November, but public hearings on the plan will be scheduled May 16 and 23.

To read the general resolution, click here. (Resolutions were also introduced with specific election dates of Aug. 7, Aug. 28, or Nov. 6)

No means no! We don't want a $1.6 million special election to send you the same message your to dumb to get. Wait till November and deal with the innefficiancies in the current system.

Tell city council to repeal their draconian marijuana ordinance that's not constitutionally compliant and is filling up our jails.

Recidivism is a $10 word for "unemployment". We have a crisis in this city for our urban youth who lack job skills and employment opportunity to work in a legal jobs. Career criminals return to their only known source of livelihood- drug dealing, larceny, burglary, prosititution etc. because once in the criminal justice system with a criminal record there is no realistic escape. If we want to stop a majority of the recidivism in our community we need real job opportunties and "second chance" programs if we wan't to break the cycle of criminal acitivity. This will require government, business and community leaders working together to bring real job opportunities to our urban core and a willingness to train and employ some hard core street kids and thugs, many of whom are used to carrying guns and hurting people. Are we as a community ready to welcome these people into our places of employment as co-workers? That my friends is the real issue we need to address. The taxes are the easy question.

RECIDIVISM IS A $10 WORD FOR UNEMPLOYMENT -- YOU ARE BRILLIANT!! THIS IS ABOUT THE SMARTEST THING I HAVE EVER READ ON ANY OF THESE BLOGS --
here's my part - with the Banks and building the Jail - let's mandate that a certain percentage of the jobs go to felons

Give a felon a job and you eliminate multiple court appearances in the future, you provide a father and support for the most vulnerable children inthe community,

we need an apprenticeship program for these people- let them build their destiny or live in it.
