It Didn't Take Long ....

Less than two hours after Cincinnati City Council on Wednesday voted 8-1 to oppose the possible May parole of Roland Reaves, a press release arrives by e-mail from the Hamilton County Republican Party.

Its headline? "Crowley Stands Up For Convicted Cop Killer."

Maggie Nafziger, executive director of the party, accused Crowley of slapping the entire police department in the face and said maybe Crowley would like Reaves to get out of prison, live in his neighborhood and shop at his grocery store.

Crowley was the only one to vote against Republican Chris Monzel's resolution to oppose parole for Reaves, who was first sentenced to death for the 1974 killing of Officer David Cole. That sentence was later commuted to life in prison.

Crowley, a Democrat, said he didn't feel it was appropriate to weigh in, that the question should be left to the Ohio Parole Board.

"I'm not in a position to judge what this man has done or not done for his freedom," he said.

Vice Mayor Jim Tarbell voted in favor of opposing parole, but later said he had mixed feelings and somewhat agreed with Crowley.

Councilman Cecil Thomas was on the force with Cole at the time of the killing. He remembered the incident as "very cold, callous - just outright murder."

Councilman Jeff Berding, a fellow Democrat, blasted Crowley, questioning whether Crowley used "flawed logic or has a warped value system."

He pointed out that Crowley thought it appropriate in February to ask council to weigh in on the war in Iraq.

As a Republican activist who has seen Maggie and her sidekick shoe-shopping in the middle of the afternoon on two different occasions, I am glad to see she took time to actually do her job today!

Sounding off on the federal government's war in Iraq: Appropriate

Sounding off on parole for the killer of a city police officer: not appropriate.

So thinketh David Crowley.

Common sense has already told us all that Reaves is nothing more than a cold blooded killer. I hope Monzel is not just creating a vote getting resolution inorder to benefit himself in the next election. I think that Crowley and Tarbell may have caught on to Monzel's motive.

Is Jeff Berding with Republicans to undercut Crowley again???????

For once something came out of Berding's mouth besides hot air. I appreciate that he gave the extremist Crowley a well-deserved lecture.

As for the first post here, I'm not even that active in politics and have seen Maggie at a number of late night events. Her job will require her to be at morning events as early as 7:00 AM and after-hours events well into the night. Everyone has to shop sometime. If she spent 1 hour every single afternoon shopping, that would mean she only works 60-70 hours per week instead of 70 or 80.

Did Berding write that press release for the Republicans?

Don't even try to pile on Jeff Berding for taking the correct position on this issue!

David Crowley is an embarrassment to our entire city. His Liberal, extremist views have no place in ANY government body - except for a Student Government at some drug-induced college campus during the Vietnam War.

Shame on you Mr. Crowley. You've really outdone yourself on this one. Please remember your vote if you ever need to call the police to come deal with a person at your bar. I suggest you ask the unruly patron if they have been "rehabilitated properly" by the system before you make a judgement about them.

And Tarbell, you have the political spine of a windsock. Thank God you are term-limited.

Crowley and Tarbell. Pathetic.

Jeff, nice to hear from you.

How's Fairfax Station, Virginia these days?

Tell Bob and Liz we all said hello.

Signed,

Sure, Crowley didn't get the issue right.

But, Jeff Berding has joined with Republican forces AGAIN to attack Crowley.

Democrats: Please do not vote for any member of the fiscal five next fall. Vote for an independent, or simply don't vote for all 9 candidates.

Why would Monzell come in with such a motion? Is there precedent for City Council to vote on parole cases? Will they take a vote on each parole case in the future? Obviously Monzel (probably at Berding's instigation since he got all the publicity out of this) saw a hot button issue that would appeal to Cincinnati conservatives, and introduced this motion for the publicity that would result.

Further evidence that this was a set-up by Berding, fronted by Monzel, is that Berding was on the Cunningham show to talk about it, rather than Monzel.

Berding's statement that David Crowley used "flawed logic or has a warped value system" is reprehensible, since Berding himself has demonstrated that he has no moral compass.

Mark Mallory went to great lengths when he became Mayor to make committee assignments that would be inclusive, and cause Council to work as a team. Berding has used that generous gesture to promote himself and make Council anything but a deliberative body, and he has often worked against many of those who elected him. In the process he has gained some Republican and conservative friends. Stay tuned to see if they can save his political career.

A lot of true blue Dems will not be voting for Berding or Cole after what they've pulled time and time again.let's see what Bonnie White who did media in '05 for Berding and Cole will do. how about a robocall with Cole and Berding singing "Ebony and Ivory". May i suggest instead some excerpts from Stevie Wonder's Livin for the City:
"His father works some days for fourteen hours
And you can bet he barely makes a dollar
His mother goes to scrub the floors for many
And youd best believe she hardly gets a penny
Living just enough, just enough for the city...
His hair is long, his feet are hard and gritty
He spends his life walking the streets of new york city
Hes almost dead from breathing in air pollution
He tried to vote but to him theres no solution

I hope you hear inside my voice of sorrow
And that it motivates you to make a better tomorrow
This place is cruel no where could be much colder
If we dont change the world will soon be over
Living just enough, STOP GIVING JUST ENOUGH FOR THE CITY
