What Boehner said 90 days ago - UPDATED

On CNN Jan. 23:

CNN Congressional Correspondent Andrea Koppel: “How long can you and your membership give the president and give the Iraqi military, before you say, you know what, you're not doing your job?”

House Minority Leader John Boehner, R-West Chester: “I think it will be rather clear in the next 60 to 90 days as to whether this plan is going to work. And, again, that's why we need to have close oversight, so that we just don't look up 60 or 90 days from now and realize that -- that this plan is not working. We need to know, as we -- as we're -- we move through these benchmarks, that the Iraqis are doing what they have to do.”

Today marks the Day No. 90, according to Democrats, who have been pitching this story like crazy. So does Boehner think the troop escalation plan has worked?

UPDATE:

Boehner spokeswoman Jessica R. Towhey had this to say about the 90-day statement:

“Boehner’s remarks were consistent with what [David H.] General Petraeus told senators during his confirmation hearings – that as we move toward summer we will have a much better idea about the progress, or lack of it, we are making. General Petraeus is giving a briefing to lawmakers tomorrow about the progress we’ve made and the challenges that remain, and Boehner hopes his Democratic colleagues will actually show up this time so they can hear a progress report together.”

LATEST UPDATE:

ABC News reports that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., plans to skip today's bipartisan briefing with Gen. Petraeus.

Boehner's statement on Pelosi's decision to skip the briefing:

“It is shameful that while our troops wake up every morning and courageously face death in defense of our freedom, the politicians in charge of Congress can’t even find the time to meet face-to-face with their commander. ... This is just the latest example of Democrats willfully ignoring the consequences of retreat, both for the region and for the safety and security of the American people.”

Boehner sucks up so much money from lobbyists representing war profiteers that he will never admit that Iraq is a deadly failure by every measure. Instead, he will almost certainly blame the Democrats for wanting to bring the troops home alive when "victory is within reach". His remark last week about the Democrats insisting on a "surrender date" indicates his level of desperation. It wouldn't be so disgusting if he could even define "victory", but after 4 years neither Boehner nor any of the other neoclowns has come up with a definition that they stuck with more than a few months.

Malia,

Please pursue this and get Portman's comments on record. This is important.

And, please, don't include any comments about his hair or ties.

Why are Portman's comments relevant? They will simply be administration talking points. He is a member of the administration, as Budget Director. Do you really think the Enquirer is going to get a scoop from Portman? Why do you think he's budget director in the first place? Let's just say repeating Bush administration rhetoric is a job for which he is uniquely suited.

I would say, so now we get to see if he's a man of his word , but based on the company he keeps, his tan and his pockets being overflowing -- we all know what he'll say -bs

this is pretty important news for our region - i hope it appears in the paper.

Why is it that whenever Bonehead Boehner get''s an attack of foot in mouth disease he blames someone else for the foot. This guy is a smooth criminal as long as you let him continue to be!

Malia,

Stay focused on the issue, not the distraction that Boehner's office is creating about Pelosi.

Boehner clearly set the 90-day threshold and it's now been 90 days. We know where Pelosi stands and why. Please find out where Boehner stands and why, and whether it squares with his earlier statement.

Journalism 101.

So where was Pelosi...

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-California, does not plan to attend Gen. David Petraeus' briefing for lawmakers Wednesday, and instead had a one-on-one phone briefing with the him Tuesday night, according to an aide.

Pelosi spokesman Nadeam Elshami told CNN the Speaker realized "first thing (Tuesday) morning" she had a scheduling conflict and could not attend the all-House members briefing Wednesday, so her office tried to set up a special, face-to-face meeting with the General.

Petraeus was unable to meet in person, so the two talked by phone for about 30 minutes on Tuesday. Elshami insisted it was not meant as a slight, and that it turned out to be even more beneficial for Pelosi to have the chance to hear from Petraeus and ask questions independently.

Oh. Nevermind. No need to report this.

And where was Sen. John McCain, a high-profile supporter of Bush’s escalation policy? He skipped the briefing so he could campaign in New Hampshire.

No need to mention this either.
