The Early Birds Get The Press Conference

Lots of Cincinnati officials helped put together the $1.5 million youth employment program. The newest piece, announced Thursday, gives almost $600,000 to the Cincinnati Community Action Agency to find jobs for 360 teen-agers 14 to 18 - and more meaningful jobs, everyone hopes, than the trash-collecting teens did in a previous program.

City Manager Milton Dohoney Jr. asked for proposals from agencies and got them from three - CAA, Citizens Committee on Youth and the Urban League. He chose CAA.

Officials were working out when to announce the initiative, coordinating with all the agencies involved on when their staffers could join for a press conference. That press conference was possibly going to be today.

But Councilmembers Laketa Cole, Chris Bortz and Jeff Berding - they helped fight to keep the money in the budget - moved faster. Flanked by more than a dozen folks from CAA, Cincinnati State and Metro, they held their press conference at 4:15 p.m. Thursday - while Mayor Mallory was two blocks away at his second annual job fair for teens.

These clown-cil hijackers were merely doing their job !

Hardly worthy of press coverage !

Yet, CAA evidently had an innovative plan ?

Seems the wRong wingnut press should choose to serve the public with the full details of the plan !

Instead we receive the "fishwRap's" wRong wingnut whacko elephant propaganda !

PATHETIC !

HAD ENOUGH, VOTE DEMOCRAT 2007 !

Why do we pay more money to find jobs for 360 people than the total they will earn over the course of the summer? For $1.5 million to aid 360 youth, that averages to $4,166.66 each.

If each youth works 40 hours a week for 12 weeks at $8 an hour, they will only earn $3,840 each. That comes to a grand total of less than $1.4 million generated.

Who gets $1.5 million to find youth jobs? If the city gives me $1.5 million, I'll employ every one of the 360 youth myself at $8/hour for up to 40 hours a week for up to 12 weeks and still make about $120,000 for my 3 months of efforts.

Government should not be involved in this - government should only make the way easier for businesses to create jobs themselves. If the government does it like it currently is doing, it costs taxpayers more to find jobs than to simply have the city employ the youths itself.

And why is trash collecting a "less meaningful" job? Where in any book is getting paid to make the city cleaner a demeaning job? The priorities, management and message of this place makes me sick.

The fact that my taxpayer dollars supports it, and that I can't vote against it makes me even sicker.

Looks like the, so called, "fiscal-five" is utilizing reaganonmics !

I think the bold type guy should stop saying vote Democrat 2007 since 2 of the fiscal five are Democrats. I am an active Democrat, but I cannot vote for the entire Democratic slate in 2007, Berding and Cole don't deserve to be vote for because of their participation in the "fiscal five" and Thomas doesn't deserve reelection for his rediculous measure to further criminalize marijuana use in Cincinnati.

Dear Mr. Crowley. Are you really the bold type guy?

Kings Island is now the Wal-Mart of amazement parks by expanding their bottom line off the backs of the taxpayers.

Anon 1:11 is absolutely right - something is WaY out of balance here - way out of balance!

Heck, give them all jobs in the various county and city offices, like internships, and they'll learn some real job skills and save the government some money during the height of vacation season.

This is ridiculous

So Berding, Cole and Ghiz were busy grandstanding for publicity while the mayor was actually DOING something- this isn't news, this is what happens every day.
Berding pulled a similar stunt when he read a report over Thomas's shoulder and then rushed to issue a release before Cecil could, when the topic was safety and Cecil heads that comm.-that ran in this same blog. Berding NEVER learns- after Tuesday's meeting where he nearly lost being endorsed, he's still pulling this BS-just keep digging that hole, Gerald.
Those three would call a press conference for anything. Here's an idea- when Berding goes to Hair Club for Men, issue a press release. When Cole gets a new tat, another press conference.

"Doing something"???!!!

Attending an annual jobs fair? That's about as active as Mallory gets.

Point me to one, new accomplishment of ANY magnitude. Portune is the only one doing anything. He is the de facto mayor.

Mayor Zero.
