U.S. House debate on Iraq troop surge continues ...
It's Day 2 of the winter snow storm sweeping across Ohio and the East Coast. And it's also Day 2 of the intense debate in the U.S. House over President Bush's decision to send more than 20,000 additional troops into Iraq.
If you're snowed in or near a TV, go ahead and tune into C-SPAN right now. Rep. Steve LaTourette, a Republican from northeastern Ohio, is speaking. Ohio Rep. Deborah Pryce, a Republican from the Columbus area, spoke recently. And we're expecting local Rep. Mike Turner, a Centerville Republican, to speak at about 2:45 p.m., give or take. (UPDATE: Due to a schedule change, Turner is now expected to speak at 6:30 p.m. tonight.)
Yesterday, the federal government in Washington shut down at 2 p.m. Today, they opened up two hours late, due to the "wintry mix" of snow and ice. So what about Congress, you may wonder? Has the weather affected the congressional debate over the Iraq troop surge?
Not so much.
Majority Leader Steney Hoyer, D-Md., said this yesterday: "Our men and women in Iraq are not shutting down because of rain, heat ... sandstorms ... We're going to do our job!"
House Minority Leader John Boehner, a local Republican from West Chester, led off the debate yesterday. You can read his remarks in the Congressional Record.
UPDATE: You can also READ Boehner's remarks and watch a VIDEO of him on his Web site.
Check back here for updates on when our other Greater Cincinnati lawmakers are planning to speak - and what they say. The final vote on the Democratic-sponsored resolution "disagreeing" with the troop surge is expected to happen on Friday.

Hopefully Jean will do better than her last speech on the floor, regarding the war.
Will Steve Chabot finally apologize to US troops for calling for war with Iraq immediately after 9/11, saying that Saddam was a nuclear threat to the US?
Nope, he will stay in denial.
U.S. POLICY TOWARD IRAQ
HEARING
BEFORE THE
SUBCOMMITTEE ON THE MIDDLE EAST
AND SOUTH ASIA
OF THE
COMMITTEE ON
INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS
HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
ONE HUNDRED SEVENTH CONGRESS
FIRST SESSION
OCTOBER 4, 2001
Mr. CHABOT. I will keep my remarks brief so we can get to the panel.
I would like to thank the Chairman for holding this important hearing. And just from this Member's point of view, I personally believe that Iraq, and Saddam Hussein in particular, ought to be—I think he has given us more than enough reason to put him up there with Osama bin Laden in this war against terrorism. And if we are serious about ending, destroying and stopping international terrorism, we absolutely have to target Saddam Hussein.
You know, my principal concern—and I have said this to a lot of people—I have spoken to a lot of schools back in my district, and some of the kids are a bit concerned about war and the possibility of a draft and that sort of thing. What I have said, and I firmly believe, is that the loss of life that this Nation suffered just a few weeks ago in New York and here in Washington, DC and in Pennsylvania, as terrible as it was, pales in comparison to the potential loss of life next time if chemical or biological or, God forbid, nuclear weapons are used sometime in the not-too-distant future in this country. And that is why it is absolutely critical that we prevail in this war against terrorism. And I believe Saddam Hussein has to be a principal target of that war. I would urge the Administration to include him in those people that we absolutely have to get rid of.

Malia, can't you even fake impartiality? Why is it that you refer only to Republican House members and totaly ignore the seven Democratic members of the Ohio delegation? Are they not worth listening to? Just so you know, the Democratic members are Zack Space,Timothy Ryan,Betty Sue Hutton, Stephanie Tubbs Jones, Dennis Kucinich, Marcy Kaptur, and Charles Wilson,Jr. I am sure, despite your blatant prejudice, that they are every bit worth hearing as those you mentioned in your political advertisement.
Looks like John Cranley can't get past the last election....he's still posting the same old campaign garbage. To John and all his supporters....get over it.
By the way, thanks for at least posting the transcript so people can see that Chabot says Saddam should be a target in the War on Terror, the same policy that was put forward by President Clinton. He is not "calling for war," but restating our longstanding U.S. policy of regime change in Iraq.
