Strickland starts with high support

By a 45 to 12 percent margin, Ohio voters approve of the job Gov. Ted Strickland is doing in his first days in office, according to Quinnipiac University poll results released today. But 43 percent of the respondents were undecided.

By a 70 to 2 percent margin, voters support spending more money on schools in poorer communities, but have mixed feelings about a proposed constitutional amendment to change the funding system, the independent poll found.

By a 60 to 31 percent margin, Ohio voters said they supported Strickland’s decision on Jan. 19 to temporarily delay three executions while he reviews the cases. White evangelical Christians supported the delay 56 to 36 percent and Republicans backed it by a narrower 49 to 45 percent margin. Democrats supported it by a 65 to 25 percent margin, with 10 percent undecided.

Even so, voters said they support the death penalty, by a 48 to 38 percent margin, instead of life without parole for convicted murderers.

"Strickland is getting good grades from voters so far, although he has not yet tackled the tough questions facing Ohio,'' said Peter Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute in Hamden, Conn. "Many voters have not yet formed an opinion of him, but among those who have, he benefits by comparison with former Gov. Robert Taft and is doing very well."

If the state’s budget situation requires sacrifice, Ohio voters would, by a 51 to 34 percent margin, rather see state services cut than taxes raised, the poll found, although Democrats are evenly split on that question.

From Jan. 23-28, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,305 Ohio voters, with a margin of error of plus or minus 2.7 percentage points. The university conducts public opinion surveys in Ohio, Florida, Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey and Connecticut as a public service and for research.

Regarding whether the state's current budget "situation" requires sacrifice or not...if i'm correct, isn't Ohio currently one of the highest taxed states in the union already? Here's a concept...maybe, just maybe that's part of the problem. One need look no further than the federal "situation" right now to see that lowering tax rates causes revenue, like water over Niagra Falls, to flow into the treasury. Also, making it attractive to businesses to relocate in our state or not move out of state is also a no-brainer. Why do i have my doubts that this democrat governor will opt for these proven concepts, though?

Mike,

A few weeks ago, the current Governor of Ohio stated that during the next several months he would talking with people all throughout Ohio to find out what they want to "keep".

Governor Strickland inherited a state government with a $1 BILLION dollar budget shortfall. If you pay close attention to his words, he doesn't sound like a man who has any plan whatsoever to increase taxes on the people of Ohio.

However, there is another side to the issue that will undergo significant scrutiny during the next few months... What do people want to "keep"?

It is not Governor Strickland's fault that he inherited a budget that, for all intensive purposes, wasn't real. A $1 billion dollar shortfall is a pretty significant error. I have faith that Democratic Governor Ted Strickland will look beyond politics and actaully work with Democrats and Republicans to solve this incredible challenge in a fair and reasonable way.

Thanks for taking the time to read my message. Have a nice day.

(Oh, I almost forgot... I ran for US Congress 2 times in the Ohio 2nd during the last 2 years and was the ONLY Democrat who repeatedly promised to never raise your taxes)...

Former Democratic Candidate for US Congress

".....Why do i have my doubts that this democrat governor will opt for these proven concepts,though?..."

Mike, you have your doubts because you have bought the wRong wingnut whacko propaganda, period !

It is the pay to play, "culture of corruption" former misleaders who foolishly spent our tax payer dollars on Noe, non-collectable, rare coins, etc.

Nationally we have massive deficit spending due to off balance sheet items, such as the cost of war, corporate welfare, etc.

This is a direct result of the tax welfare given to the top 1% who control 90 % of the nations wealth !

The value of the dollar, not to mention our standing in the world, has been flushed down the crapper and there is a "Barrier" of elephant dung you choose to goose-step through !

The wRong wingnut whacko misleaders took fiscal surplus and wasted it for cronyism !

PATHETIC !

HAD ENOUGH, VOTE DEMOCRAT 2007 !

Under the new Governor I see action, swift and sure. A current investigation at the state hospital of theft in office has resulted in the removal of a high ranking official the accussed.
Rumors of reducing state spending through buyouts and attrition.
Seems like watching the spending and misuse of tax dollars is high on Ted's agenda.

Jim Parker - "Oh, I almost forgot, I ran for U.S. Congress two times..."

What does this mean? How could you forget? You shove it down our throats every chance you get. You are very transparent Mr. Parker. It is so obvious to us that your main agenda is "yourself". Also, running for Congress does not make you the authority you think you are. Pathetic!

Hi Jean. Nice to hear from you again... Have a nice weekend.

I just read the comment that somebody wrote and think that it deserves my response.

Running for Congress has nothing to do with me. It never has and it never will... It has everything to do with you. Rather than try to convince you, let me describe it to you.

Imagine working all day and then, without even going home, driving 100 miles to talk with a room full of people who are probably going to vote for another candidate from Cincinnati anyhow. Then, after explaining why you thought that you were the only person who could actually win a general election in November (something that my party hasn't been able to do in the 2nd District for almost 40 years), you get back in your car and drive 100 miles back home.

It's not so bad at first. You feel like you are on a mission to save Medicare and that you can actually maybe save the lives of a few American soldiers by stopping the war. You think that maybe you could be the voice that brings Republicans and Democrats together and that maybe... just maybe you could actually get something done in Washington for the people back home... So you keep up the fight and keep driving, day after day and talking with thousands of people... Asking them to believe in you as much as you believe in them...

You drive to town after town and go to house after house and meet thousands of people. You ask them to vote for you (Something that thousands of people actually did on election day...) And every now and then... You meet a person who has such incredible problems that you totally forget about politics. You forget about the campaign and you actually stop and listen to what incredible challenges they are facing in their lives. Those people are everywhere throughout Southern Ohio. I never once ran for Congress for me... I did this for them. Some of those people have died since I last ran for Congress and some of them told me that voting for me was the last thing that they were ever going to do in their life... And then that is what they did.

Then, after awhile, you start to become so physically and mentally exhausted from it all that you have to pull over at gas stations or at the rest stop right past the Pike County line on Route 32 to sleep in your car for 10 minutes just so you can make it home. It's very quiet in Southern Ohio late after midnight at places like that. But then you wake up and somehow manage to make it home. Of course, you missed out on another day in your family's life and they missed out on you...

Then you get up, after three or four hours sleep and do it all over again the next day, and the next day and the next day. You arrive home late at night and find your children asleep. You're too tired to talk with your wife. She probably doesn't want to hear it anyhow because she hates politicians. She thinks that most of them are liars and don't really make much of a difference in people's lives anyhow. Believe it or not, my friend, that's how most people do feel about politicians. Another day gone with incredible regrets for time lost. But you tell yourself that you are doing this for the people that you choose to represent so you keep up the fight. People need somebody who really cares instead of the joke of a United States Congress that they have right now.

This is just a small snapshot of what that experience was like. It's even worse when you aren't wasting a bunch of money on a political campaign. You run for Congress against millionaires and people who don't have to go to work to support their families everyday. But you keep up the fight because giving up isn't part of who you are... But, my friend, it is people like yourself who spew words of hatred that convince me even more that somebody like me has to be there to protect the people that I care about about... If they don't have people like me, then they will be represented by people who put corporate interests or campaign contributors interests ahead of what is truly good for people. People need somebody who truly cares instead of what we have right now.

In healthcare, we set aside all differences and solve people's problems. If the US Congress had more people in it like the people I work with everyday, they wouldn't need people like me. But they don't so they do...

I want you to know that you have helped me with a decision with which I have been struggling lately... You have helped me to change the name under which I am posting my messages. Believe me... This is not something that I was truly looking forward to... But you have taken me one step closer to a decision that, someday, will help millions of people with the challenges they face in their daily lives. You have done a good thing today.

Thank you.

A message to the person who posts in bold. You are hurting the Democratic Party with your negativity. If you truly think you are an authority on public policy then put YOUR name on the ballot. Otherwise, please stop using words like PATHETIC to describe people.

Parker had a thousand percent increase in number of vote obtained from one year to the next. He spent no money to do it. And thousands of people in the 2nd District know Jim Parker's name.

Jim Parker is a winner by my definition.

Wow bold face guy told someone to go abort themselves. You truly are a jerk.
I read these blogs and agree with some and disagree with some. Noone is telling you not express your opinion. Please do. However your disrespect for those who do not agree with you is really a true sign of your lack of caracter.
You have crossed the line when you tell someone to "abort themself." In this day when politics is more and more polarized we really do not need people like you whos only agenda is to disrespect others. Please grow up, but I am afraid we all know you won't. We will hear more of the same instead of intelligent, well thought out, respectful debate.

The only way that the Democratic Party will ever win the US Congressional seat in the Ohio 2nd District is to help a Democrat who can work equally with Democrats AND Republicans win the Democratic primary. After all, after the primary, most of the voters in the District are Republicans and the Democratic candidate has to be able to be able to turn around and seriously ask Republicans to vote for him.

Any other type of candidate is destined for failure in November. The Democratic Party in Hamilton County has been (unfortunately) losing the 2nd District for almost 40 years. The 2nd District is the most conservative district in the entire state of Ohio and the Democratic Party (including organizations like Democracy for Cincinnati) needs to work together to support a Democratic primary candidate who can actually win in a Republican District. Any other approach is a pointless waste of time and money.

I have experience working with people, who everyday, put aside all differences and get down to the business of saving human lives. They don't care if you are a Democrat or Republican. I am proud of my healthcare administration background and am honored to have worked with so many incredibly dedicated people throughout my career.

As for the person who continually posts his bold comments on this site, you have crossed the line. You truly ARE hurting the Democratic Party with your continuous display of hatred. I'm not sure who you are or what you have against my candidacy, but it is disturbing to see the Democratic Party be hurt in such a way by people like yourself who govern through the eyes of hatred. How many elections has our party won in the 1st or 2nd District since the Vietnam war? Almost ZERO. Compare that to how many millions of dollars have been spent on those same districts during the last 4 decades.

Also, your numbers are all wrong. If you look at the record, almost the same number of people voted for me in 2006 as voted for Paul Hackett just one year earlier. The only difference, most of my votes didn't come from Hamilton County. There is strength in my future candidacy because people know that I am serious about this... Maybe the Enquirer will finally take my candidacy seriously after I go to 15,000 homes and try to fight for everything that is right and good in this country...

Thank you.

Hey, we think we resemble that !

Why can't you embrace the liberal agenda !

"....We will hear more of the same instead of intelligent, well thought out, respectful debate...."

Now bubba, at the risk of condescending, it is difficult to have an intelligent communication with grade-school drop-outs !

For example:

Does:

Wow bold face guy = stereotypical gender bias, or are you clueless ?

Noone = none or nun ?

caracter = character ?

whos = whose

Intelligent:

Abort = verb
1. terminate before completion; "abort the mission"; "abort the process running on my computer"

well thought out:

INDEED !!!

PATHETIC !

HAD ENOUGH, VOTE DEMOCRAT 2007 !

Your comment telling someone to go abort themselves was very clear as it was clear to the person that posted earlier.

You can double talk all you want. You telling someone to go abort themself was wrong!!! That is not itelligent, it is just plain mean.

I have not "bought" into any propaganda...my comments about the budget were about economics. Not everything is a political comment. As far as your comment on the national budget, it helps prove my point as the deficit you speak of continues to be lower than so called expert predictions every quarter because more revenue is flowing into the treasury than what was counted on....this is due to tax rate reductions. It's called supply side economics and it's not rocket science...an open minded junior high schooler can understand it because it's nothing more than human nature in action. Try to calm down a bit and be happy, you seem so angry and bitter...but, then again, you are a liberal and can't help it. Nevermind, go ahead...you're showing everyone who you truly are.

You have bought the propaganda if you think the deficit has been cut in half.

You are naive and disillusioned, period !

What is the value of the dollar over the last six years !

What is the national savings rate over the last six years !

What is the national debt over the last six years ?

Who finances 25 % of our national debt ?

Any grade school student can see your consumed with propaganda !

Supply side economics ?

Does that include the theory that a gallon of gas is 2.5 times the cost it was before the wRong wingnut whackos took control ?

Supply side economics ?

Does that include corporate welfare tax breaks to an industry reaping record windfall profits ?

Supply side economics ?

Does that include a nation where 1 % of the population controls 90 % of the wealth ?

Keep spewing the elephant dung, your true colors are showing !

PATHETIC !

HAD ENOUGH, VOTE DEMOCRAT 2007 !
