Temporary jail debated

The issue changed Tuesday at Cincinnati city hall, but the tone didn’t.

Council member Cecil Thomas, chairman of the city’s Law and Public Safety Committee, blocked a motion backed by members Jeff Berding and Leslie Ghiz, that would have the city and Hamilton County work together on building a temporary jail.

The idea is for City Manager Milton Dohoney, Jr. and County Administrator Patrick Thompson to work together in hiring a project manager who will recommend where to build the jail and what type of jail to build. The structure is meant to hold at least 500 female inmates and open beds at the Hamilton County Justice Center.

But Thomas decided against moving that motion forward because, he said, he wanted a task force to examine the county’s jail problem first.

Berding said the two issues aren’t mutually exclusive. Let the manager and administrator get started on the temporary jail, he said, the task force is supposed to look ways to build a permanent facility.

“Let’s not play politics with the issue of crime and public safety,” Berding said.

Thomas wasn’t swayed.

“This is not an issue of politics,” Thomas said. “It’s an issue of making sure we know what we’re doing. There are an enormous number of short-term solutions that the city and county have been unwilling to do because of the old way of doing business.”

That led Ghiz to dress down Thomas.

“You are clearly mistaken,” Ghiz said. “I’m actually quite appalled that I’m sitting here in the Law Committee and you’re holding up a motion like this. It’s speaks to your leadership. It’s disappointing. We’ll figure out a way to move this forward, with or without you.”

That exchange happened just minutes after Cincinnati Mayor Mark Mallory said the discourse between council members has recently been below what is expected.

“We need to respect one another in expressing our differences,” Mallory said. “I’m not sure that’s happening. The rules that govern how we conduct ourselves in council apply to committee meetings. There will be a reminder on that.”

Council members and all three county commissioners held a press conference two weeks ago during which they agreed to work together on building a temporary jail so that the county doesn’t have to pay to ship overflow prisoners to outlying counties. That effort is supposed to happen at the same time that the task force works on the larger issue of how to finance a permanent jail.

At the end of the Tuesday’s meeting, Berding began to apologize for leading a discussion that “was not helpful.”

Ghiz walked out in the middle of his comment.

Oh God! Chaos at city hall, worse than ever!

Now our strong mayor is going to fix it? It is a joke.

Shocking!

Another spat at City Hall involving Jeff Berding.

He sure is willing to take on anyone. Actually the only person I cannot remember him getting into a spat with are Ghiz and Monzel.

But what could those 3 have in common?

Please, using the word "class" anywhere near the word "Ghiz" makes a mockery of the English language. She is as rough as an old piece of chewed up leather.

On one hand, I commend people who devotes themselves to public service. On the other hand, some of these people are self-serving jerks who care more about stroking their egos than about getting things done and acting professionally.

This city has been let down in the past. Yet, incredibly, even after "ending the chaos" was made the main issue in the last election, this new city council is completely ignoring the voters, who DEMANDED civility out of their city government. Now all we have are pi$$ing contests and stalemates over issues that should not be contentious.

I say as long as there are other competent candidates, which is actually pretty doubtful, we should just vote them all out of office and start over. This is pathetic. Every Cincinnatian should feel as though he or she is being slapped in the face.

Ghiz has low class?!

Excuse me?!

She's one of the few officials down there with a spine!!!

She's one of the few that makes the tough decisions and doesn't play "politics."

I say, "Way to go, Leslie. Keep up the great work!"

Mallory's "we all need to respect each other when we disagree" is getting old.

Great. Let's have a Mayor and Council who sit around, holding hands, singing kumbaya, smiling at each other while we set another homicide record and let The Banks sit empty for another 2 or 3 years.

Here's Mallory's next campaign theme:

"Cincinnati - We're killing each other but at least we all get along"

How many more task forces and studies does our local government need to determine the need for more jail space? Quit stalling and do something!!

Cincinnati and Hamilton County have to be the leaders in the nation in conducting studies. As long as they are "studying" the issues they don't have to act on them.

With government like this, it's no wonder Cincinnati is so behind the times.

".....I say, "Way to go, Leslie. Keep up the great work!"..."

We agree !

Keep up the great work of demonstrating that association with wRong wingnut whackos leads to endless attempts to grand-stand !

The voter can see right through a hindlick and self-dealing !

PATHETIC !

To coin a phrase- I'm surrounded by IDIOTS (city council). It never ceases to amaze me that when city council and mayor elections come and go, we keep getting the same empty promises (We will work together, stop the bickering, and get things done) Well guess what City Council- WE'VE HEARD THAT BEFORE! We need regional government and I cannot wait to vote these egomaniacs out of office

Leslie Ghiz has a problem with another black person. Can't exactly say I'm shocked. Mallory, Thomas, the city manager, Winburn, Malone, Ghiz seems to have a problem with every black person she encounters regardless of their party.

Jeff Berding is a tool, and has been since his Student Loan Funding days.

The fact that a sleazeball like him can get elected to public office illuminates the sorry state of politics in America. Or in Ohio, at any rate (the state that somehow inexplicably re-elected Jean Schmidt... speaking of sleazeballs).
