Snow in February
It used to be unthinkable that a presidential press secretary would be out and about on the rubber-chicken circuit, banging the drum for his president's political party, but Tony Snow has pretty much buried that convention of American politics.
Snow, the Princeton High School grad and former Fox News talking head, was out on the campaign trail last fall to help GOP congressional candidates raise money - including a stop here for Jean Schmidt.
He'll be back next week, as the keynote speaker at the Hamilton County Republican Party's $80-a-pop Lincoln-Reagan Dinner at the Westin Hotel.
(Republican old-timers will remember this annual event as the "Lincoln Day Dinner." A few years ago the party decided that the Great Communicator was to be given equal billing with the Great Emanicipator.)
While out on the stump for Schmidt last fall, Snow began his speech by saying he wasn't there to bash Democrats; and would launch into a misty-eyed paean to the joys of going to work every morning and being in the presence of greatness and how he still can't believe how such a thing could happen to a regular Princeton boy like him.
If you'd like to hear it again, it will cost you 80 bucks.

And that is one of the problems with politicians today - they think that they are great. They forget that this is a representative democracy, and they are to represent their constituents. Good leadership convinces and doesn't just say - "I am the decider."
Attendees--Please remember to concentrate on that banging drum. It's your best defense against independent thought.
P.S.- thank me later
dear howard,
are you surprised that even though democrats are now the majority in both the senate and house, they still find reasons to bitch, moan, and whine?
I'm beginning to believe that the only way to actually make a difference in this whole arena is to put my name on the ballot again...
The last time I ran for Congress, I challenged Jean Schmidt to a debate on HEALTHCARE, the ECONOMY and the WAR in Iraq. She ignored me. (Jusy t like she continues to ignore so many of you...)
So then I went door to door throughout our district and won or came in second "almost" everywhere.
We have a saying in healthcare, if the patient is unable to make it to the ER, then we are going to bring the ER to the patient.
The next time I run for Congress, I am going to visit the home of 15,000 Democrats before the primary and 25,000 Republicans if I win. And we are going to talk about solving the problems of the people who live in this country.
But before then(since I'm not running for anything right now), maybe I'll just start attending some Republican dinners or straw poll events where reporters are present and ask some questions of the powers that be...
It's time to get to work in this country. People have problems and it is time to start to solve them...
And if anybody out there thinks that a man from a small town in rural Ohio can't be the next Congressman to represent the people of Southern Ohio, then you haven't met Ted Strickland. He started more than 30 years ago with a pick-up truck, 2 sheets of plywood and a belief that he could change the world...
I hope that you will support me when I try again...

Bush Pushes to Open Mail without a Warrant
Last week, the country learned that President Bush signed a statement giving him authority to open people’s mail without a warrant in emergency conditions.
The ACLU will soon be filing a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request demanding details from the Bush administration. We’re also calling on Congress to exercise its oversight function and to require the Postal Service to report to Congress annually and publicly about how often each year it opens mail without a warrant.
The December 20 “signing statement” issued by President Bush leaves many questions unanswered, including the number of times this power has been used, whether people who are searched are notified after the fact, and what policies are being put in place to conduct the searches.
The Bush signing statement appears to directly contradict the bill the president signed, which states that First Class Mail cannot be opened without a warrant. In his unilateral claim to this executive power, the president does not specify whether there are special circumstances beyond those already established in the law that would allow him to open mail without a warrant and if so, what they may be. Such deliberate ambiguity raises a red flag, given President Bush’s history of asserting broad powers to spy on Americans.

PATHETIC !
HAD ENOUGH, VOTE DEMOCRAT 2007 !
Have fun guys and gals. Raise lots of $. The local Republican Party is going down the tubes faster than you can say Phil Heimlich. George Vincent is nothing more than a puppet for Joe Deters who is so arrogant that he believes just by his mere presence things will be ok. Just like that jail sales tax levy, right guys?
Mark your calendar - the HCRP will crash and burn in 2008 when DeWine, Schmidt and many others will be defeated and Deters and company will fail to carry Hamilton County for the R presidential candidate. The party will then be rebuilt from the ground up by someone who actually cares about it and knows what he's doing.
You heard it here first.
ahhh, a snow job in februrary. seems oddly appropriate.
The word, "simplistic," applies in spades to several comments on this posting. Cincy911truth has both major political parties being manipulated by the big corporations and the duly elected federal government being run by criminals. The hysterical Democrat fruitcake who dresses his comments in bold type yells about a conspiracy to open his mail without a warrant. And Anonymous at 8:35 am, 1/29, has a crystal ball in which he thinks he sees the demise of the local GOP. All three of you strange people could contribute mightily to a fine-tuning of the definition of "simplistic." The word doesn't mean simple-minded, but in the case of each of you three...maybe.
Why not surprise someone and do or say something of substance or add anything meaningful to the discussion? I don't subscribe to a single position advocated by the Democrat Jim Parker, except I think he may be pro-life like I am. But I think I'd like him if I got to know him. He's mostly all wet politically, but I do believe he's sincerely trying to do or say something useful to the voters of the Second District and the readers of this blog. I disagree with him, but I respect his insistent sincerity and his positive intentions. The three amigos above offer simplistic nonsense for which I have only contempt.
